In all seriousness, though, this is pretty incredible. I don't think people realize just how big and strong these animals are. Hope the guy is OK. Sierra Foothills Posted July 12 Posted July 12 You wouldn't go into a pasture with a domestic bull... and these are wild animals. Still it's amazing that a prey animal would become a predator and be so determined to inflict harm on a distantly pesky tourist. One thing the tourist did wrong (not that I blame him) was running away, which triggers a chase response in many animals. Obvious hindsight of course but the victim would probably have been better off facing and sidestepping the bison using the trees as obstacles/shields. 3 2 Quote

Breakout Squad Posted July 12 Posted July 12 I was 9 years old at Yellowstone and a bison blocked our front cabin door… so we went out the back door quietly. It wasn’t aggressive but still unnerving. I feel bad for that guy. He was far away and not antagonizing the animal. That bison was really fired up! 1 Quote

According to Google, you're supposed to run away if they start charging at you. They're not bears, and they won't stop if you stand still. They're also not going to run away if you try to look big & loud to scare them. If they charge towards you, you're supposed to run for cover. I was basically saying run for cover... (use the trees). A bison is much faster than a human being... you cannot outrun them. If google is correct, the rangers tell guests to stay at least 25 yards from elk and bison. He very well might have been that far away and thought it was safe. Looks like it happened in a campground too giving a false sense of security. Quote

It looked to me that the white/silver pickup truck that drove into the driveway near the bison might have set the animal off. The bison rolled and started to get up when the truck drove up, slowed down/stopped for a split second before moving on. The old man and his grandson were already out of sight (but maybe not the bison's sight). The bison seemed like it wanted to charge the truck, but the truck took off, leaving an angry bison looking for a target for his aggressive, and the old dude was the unlucky victim. 4 Quote
