Gregg Posted July 10 Posted July 10 I remember our D gave up 31 points in a 34-31 Bills playoff win over the Dolphins a few years ago who were led by a scrub QB named Skylar Thompson. 3 1 2 Quote

That is simply not good enough. I think it has primarily come down to the offensive talent around Josh - blocking not holding up and/or receivers not making plays - and is primarily on Brandon Beane. But they have promoted the GM who build the roster, promoted the OC who called the plays and obviously Josh is going nowhere. I know a lot of people think "well just play better defense and it will never come down to the end" but I went back through like 20 years worth of Superbowl winners and I think I found one that hadn't played a one score game somewhere down the playoff track. Your better side of the ball better be able to come through in those clutch moments - and ours the past few years in the playoffs has simply not done so. This is where I stand. Anyone can go back and watch all the Superbowls Brady or Mahomes won, and I guarantee you'll find other guys stepping up in big moments all throughout their playoff runs. Super small snapshot for me would be the Welker drop, where he was twisting in the air, difficult catch but gotta have it moment. He doesn't come up with it and they lose. That's how I feel about the desperation heave that went through Kincaids arms. Similar situation for Pats again, and this time, Edelman comes up with yhe difficult grab, and they go on to win the game. No matter how great Josh is, we need other guys to step up in enough key moments. 2 1 2 Quote
BillsVet Posted July 10 Posted July 10 See this as Josh's way of saying they needed a re-start, but not a total one. What it came down to is McD got so much for his defense and then couldn't win in the playoffs with it. All the picks, UFAs, and the scheme still fell apart perennially. With Beane fully in control and removed from sharing power with McD, yeah, he's accountable in a new way. Because whatever happened behind the scenes last season is over and he has responsibility now. 1 1 Quote

What part of "historically poor" is not enough for you? the point is by ignoring the much broader measure of contribution, you are essentially saying josh/the o who has done more than any other team consistently should do even more because it may have been possible to do even more (which is true, it was possible) which we (the mcd hate squad, i'm drafting go bills 808) find asinine because if the d was just "normal bad" in the play offs these games would have all been walk away victories for the bills. said another way -- you granting josh and the o the grace in the 13 seconds game is saying "there was literally nothing more on earth possible that anyone in their position could have done better at the end of the game, so the d and special teams and coach may be blamed" while the standard we have for the D/coach/special teams is a laughable "just don't totally suck this time". you are blaming the o/josh for their distance from perfection, we are blaming mcclap and co for their distance from average in the playoffs. If I remember correctly in the game at KC on the final drive McDermott didn't have Cook out there which was crazy since he is the 2nd best player on the offense. He can also take it to the house from anywhere on the field. 2 Quote

Incorrect. I do not absolve Allen and the offense for continually coming up short in high leverage situations where they had an opportunity to win the game simply because the offense surpassed the measure of "historically poor" established by our defense. I do not believe that scoring 30 points means situational football is a moot point. I am capable of assigning blame to more than one unit. Even if the blame is say 95% defense and 5% offense, when you have a once in a generation type player in Josh Allen that 5% is worth exploring. 9 minutes ago, GoBills808 said: could not have said it better myself. offense- 'no game winning drives in the final 3mins of playoff games is complete and utter failure' defense- 'hey, the other guys had short fields, what can you do?' Cooks had the ball in both hands with a knee clearly down and the defender making contact with him before ripping the ball out. That's a catch. Allen didn't throw it right to the defender, he did the right thing, that play was more on Cooks for letting the defender rip it out in the first place and the refs again, not calling that a catch like it should have been it was the throw he missed to Knox last year that would have ended the game. The game was there for him on a platter and he missed it. The game would have never gone to overtime. The refs would have never had a chance to f* the call up on the Cooks catch 1 Quote

We don’t know if he was all in favor of this, or if he grudgingly went along with it. Regardless, it’s over and it’s time to move forward. Josh gets no blame or credit from me for this benign comment. Football season will be here soon enough, then we’ll have real things to get worked up about. Amen Quote

chris heff Posted July 10 Posted July 10 I liked and defended McDermott, but both he and Frazier should have been fired after 13 seconds. Then you have, after being beaten by KC multiple times in the playoffs, we watched the Eagles defense make them look bad. If that’s not enough, Bills lose to the Patriots and lose the division and then Seahawks defense makes the look like a high school team. Blame the Bills playoff losses on Josh and the offense, or blame the defense, but ultimately the bucks stops with the head coach. Quote
