Gregg Posted July 10 Posted July 10 Just now, T master said: I loved McD, he did more for this team than any other HC since Marv . The only other coach that if given a chance to actually be THE HC was Phillips that could have been as or more successful than McD but was out because of a really bad situation so his time here was cut short . But in saying that I think that the message from McD was starting to get stale & even though as much as it pains me it was time for a change . I also think that in McD's time here he got so screwed by some of the calls made by officials & it was not funny in any way shape or form !! We all know what calls I'm talking about & there were more than a few that if those were called correctly the haters here would not be as hateful of McD as they are . I think the teams he had would have been in at least 1 Super Bowl in his time as HC but thank you Refs for F ing that up not only for the Bills fans & team but for McD as well . I think he will go on to coach again for another team & will be as successful as he was here & I will always hold him in great regard as one of the best HC's this team has ever had ! You can't argue the numbers, sure you can say he couldn't win when it counted but again there were circumstances beyond his control that kept this team from furthering their greatness & a few of them were not his fault in any way weather it was a ref or a coordinator that helped that along the way . I think McDermott will get another job, but I don't know if he will be as successful as he was in Buffalo. Whatever team hires him probably won't have a QB on the level of 17. That isn't to say McDermott will do a bad job. He did get the Bills into the playoffs with Tyrod as his QB even though some luck was needed with the Bengals win over the Ravens. But without 17 I don't see him being as successful as he was with the Bills. 1 1 3 Quote
Royale with Cheese Posted July 10 Posted July 10 19 minutes ago, Gregg said: But the one thing to remember is Brady had Belichick. Bill is a much better HC and DC than McDermott. The Pats defense did their part in helping Brady and the offense win Super Bowls. Take the 13-3 win over the Rams in the Super Bowl. Or the INT at the end of the game vs Seahawks to win that Super Bowl. Why they didn't give the ball to Lynch in that situation was a bad decision, but the Pats D stepped up and made the play to win the game. Or how about when the Pats fell behind the Falcons. Bill made adjustments and the Pats D pitched a shutout the rest of the way allowing Brady and the offense to get back in the game and finally win it. Allen has never had a defense that helped him in a big spot except for the 17-3 win over the Ravens during Covid when the Bills had a pick 6. Most the time in the playoffs the Bills defense has failed him. Yes that's true. But I would say the Falcons Super Bowl win was 99% Brady. The offense scored I believe 4 straight TD's in the last 18 minutes. And another coaching blunder by the Falcons. Instead of just running the ball late in the 4th to at least get a FG but instead, take a sack and knocked out of FG range. I think that FG would have given them a 9 or 10 point lead....no comeback happening there. Not to mention, John Kasey kicking the ball out of bounds against with the Panthers. Tuck rule. They have had their fair share of luck too. 1 2 Quote

I agree. They have never had a perfect roster and mistakes have been made, but certainly with Josh on the team, they’ve been good enough to win at all. Step one is to stop playing that soft prevent style defense in every situation that matters most. McDermot was never going to change that. Well said! I agree completely with your verbiage, and yes Sean was never ever going to change that. 1 Quote

This is the first time I’m aware of that Josh has been this definitive (publicly) on the topic. I’m really expecting some exciting and good things this year. what was that article? I'm interested in reading the whole article. 1 Quote

The shutout in Pittsburgh? It seems like every year under McDermott we get into these slogs where style of play hurts us (too slow, in my view, and self-limiting possessions) or we just turn into a sieve at crunch time (13 seconds, Denver, I think fits there as well). So the offense *definitely* has to be better in tough times. But the defense could help a bit, too, and I think that's why the change had to be made. Yep. Be nice not to have a sieve defense that doesn’t require the offense putting up 35 points for a chance to win. We can say Josh had the ball in his hands with a chance to win at the end, but we can also say Josh gave the defense a lead to protect prior to that and they couldn’t get it done when it mattered most. 2 8 Quote

Fast forward to now…they got him a WR, they fired the coach, they changed the defense. What’s else does he need? He's the best QB in the game. Love Josh but now it’s time to put up or shut up for the whole organization. I believe there is a 100% correlation between people who think Josh isn’t clutch and the people who left the game early week 1 last year. Pretty sure those same people complain about Allen all the time. warms my heart a little knowing that Josh called them out repeatedly last year and probably does not like them. That had to be an eye opening experience for him. Quote

Don't let this guy hang 30 on you in regulation (or 27, if you want to subtract the 3 at the end of the half on the brain cramp), and you win that game in spite of all of the blunders. There were actually two "threes" where the O turned it over in scoring range and the D immediately forced a 3 and out. So I'll get to 24. But again... you might beat Bo Nix and hold him to 20. You are not doing that every game throughout the playoffs and scoring 30 plus every game too. To believe that is just not realistic. Somewhere you will play a one score game. And you may well need your O in that game to perform in the crunch. 53 minutes ago, 4BillsintheBurgh said: At that point, we needed someone who knew what they were doing, that was Sean's call. It's absolutely common place at the end of the year when guys go down that teams call back vets they know and who know the system. Once you are in season your ability to really develop young depth guys in practice at the same time as preparing your team to play is so limited because of the CBA restrictions. 1 Quote

A roster that so far hasn't been good enough to help Allen get to a Super Bowl much less win one. One thing is for certain and that is the pressure is 100% on Beane going forward. He will probably get a few years with Brady but if in 2 or 3 years the Bills are still searching for that Lombardi then I think Pegula will clean house. If that happens then hopefully Allen can have the same type of success towards the end of his career that Elway had. I have made this point a few times that GMs get a farrrr greater leash compared to coaches when it comes to longevity. Part of it is when you do a clean refresh you literally have to rebuild the org structure completely and that is a huge undertaking with many potential pitfalls if not done properly. If you look at BAL, GB, PIT, PHI, SEA they are all teams that have had consistent long term success for three decades now and the GMs have all been there much longer and had multiple coaches. Hell Philly has had three different coaches take them to a SB and Howie has been there this entire time. The issue with Beane who I was ok letting go too was not him staying necessarily but the fact he got the job promotion also. That came off as nepotism and placing 100% blame on Sean who certainly deserves a lot of the blame for not breaking through, but Beane is part of it. With that said they made their bed with Brady so they better hope its Shanny/Elway 2.0 otherwise in 3-4 years everyone is gone and that could include Josh wanting out if I am being honest. 2 Quote
colin Posted July 10 Posted July 10 the two most important people for the success of a football team in a moment of time (over the long term the gm can have a bigger impact) are the head coach and the starting qb. while allen is not perfect, he is the best qb to ever play pro football. he is the best player in the nfl. he hasn't had his offense finish worse than 6th in scoring since 2020, the last two years were the best two year stretch for points per drive in buffalo bills history, and we have not had our best offensive talent (particularly at wr) playing over that time (i think a 100% healthy kinkaid and 100% availability and health for our WRs might have nudged the talent on the field on O up a couple notches, mind you). it's true that josh would have performed better than he did if he had lead to additional touchdowns in the last minutes of the last 3 playoff games, and it's also true that we have seen him score storybook touchdowns late in games enough to expect that to be a likely outcome, but as has been stated by good posters in this thread, the game is 60 minutes of regulation (plus occasional overtime) and all points scored in those 60 minutes are actually counted as equal. if we use the tools we have, we can evaluate the team over the entire game, season, and multiple seasons. over multiple playoff games, josh is statistically the greatest playoff qb in nfl history. he's also the most touch down producing player in nfl history, so it is true to trend. mcqueda has the worst defense in the history of playoff football for a team that has won multiple playoff games (the current tally is 8, but it was also true when we had fewer playoff wins). he has a horrible challenge record, he favored playing old and injured players over younger healthy players frequently, he's made some of the worst coaching moves anyone with eyes has ever seen. the hamlin punt and 13 seconds would get a high school coach laughed out of town. josh is regared as the best or one of the best qbs in the nfl by his peers, many of whom have a personal bias against rating him as highly as they might honestly feel. mcdermott has strong endorsements from low value players who have been paid famously on his teams, and plenty of detractors who have played for him. he was recently fired from his job. allen could be better, and i can write that because he has been better in some games than he was in our last 3 playoff losses. he is, however, the best currently and historically based on many measures. mcdermott always was the albatross. allen will walk day one into the hall of fame and will be spoken about as a force of nature at qb for as long as people watch football. mcdermott might back into another coaching job at the hc level where he will revert to the mean and be fired after an uninspiring season of football. while one might argue that beane should have been ditched as well, beane is the man who moved heaven and earth to draft josh allen, mcdermott is the man who benched him for nate peterman and clapped furiously after he overrode his special teams coach to kick the ball into the end zone vs kc, and then overrode his actual champion dc to call sideline prevent d vs a team with 3 time outs. a change was necessary and the world will be a better place for it. I believe Josh delivered that moment and was robbed of it in 13 seconds but the no one outside of Buffalo cares. Love Josh but now it’s time to put up or shut up for the whole organization. Most Buffalo Bills fans simply don't want to read/hear this, even though it's accurate. There are other truths, all the injuries, the bad ref calls, the lack of WR weapons, and the lack of top defensive players. Most notable in the pass rush dept. A confluence of bad luck all around. (Josh did have a foot injury) While I really like a lot of what Brandon Beane has done in his time in Buffalo, he has failed in quite a few areas. McDermott's defense counted on having a pass rush with the front four, and it failed big time this season. QB Bo Nix was not sacked in that Denver playoff game and was only touched by Groot the entire game. The lack of an X-boundary WR would have given Josh a better passing threat. (The NE Patriots added two this offseason). Like others have stated, if you're going to fire the HC, they should have cleaned house by firing the GM too. Only that's not ever going to happen as this owner loves him some Brandon Beane for finding and drafting Josh Allen. To hear him tell it, Beane was the only voice in the draft room wanting to draft Allen, and he went with his convictions. We need to take a hard look at the new DC and see if he has all the talent needed to allow his defense to work properly. He needs better play at linebacker. A player like a Micah Parsons type would be a perfect choice. I dunno, perhaps Bernard in the middle and Chubb on the edge is all he needs. Maxx Crosby is still out there. I also can't help but think that the Patriots did well in moving on from Diggs in obtaining Romeo Doubs with AJ Brown. Man, the Bills could have used those two. Is DJ Moore going to be enough? Will the Buffalo run game suffer the loss of O-line coach/ run game coordinator Aaron Kromer? I want to see the Buffalo Bills win a Super Bowl...soon. You know, while Josh is still here! 1 Quote
