Joey Bosa, Tre White, Matt Milano, Shaq Thompson, DaQuan Jones, Poyer, Von Miller (one year removed)…

Kind of an indictment of our personnel on defense recently.

It's because they're old

Those guys at 27 would all be picked up on the free agent market.. old veterans who command higher salaries are never signed fast

Joey bosa already retired.. I mean Tre white was literally by advanced metrics a top 15 corner in the NFL last year

He wasn't bad

They were a lot better at 27, lol. This was like half our starting defense last season (they were already old then).

This tells me McDermott's scheme was brutally hard to learn, and its why we kept going to the same wells with less athletic, older players who knew the scheme inside and out but lost multiple steps over elite athletic traits younger players.

Maybe our defense is worse this year but it will be a heck of a lot faster and more aggressive.

Tre will get picked up at some point. Those metrics don’t escape scrutiny by pro player personnel managers.

He also might be willing to hang up the cleats

He said last year if he couldn't get back to Buffalo he was willing to retire.. he's made his money he's been an All pro

Bosa said screw it I'm done lol

How many guys like that are sitting out league wide right now? There are tiers of players, and they each play different roles in the offseason. I don’t think this is cause to draw conclusions or point fingers at some other side. It’s what happens every year. We had some old guys, some scheme specific guys, and that stuff happens. Sitting at home tonight watching World Cup does not mean you won’t be playing in the NFL next year. There is hope!

I don’t think it’s that big of a deal.

I think I'd take Thompson and Milano back as depth. Both are still good players. Tre had a good year last year and I'm honestly surprised another team hasent picked him up.

I read Von had 9 sacks with the commanders last season despite only playing 37% of defensive snaps.

I realize Beane wants to go with the young guys but what if they can't put up numbers like that ?

Curious how many of those sacks were garbage time

They were who the former HC wanted.

Sounds like bosa is retired.

terrible signing last year to go with ogunjobi.

I thought Bosa was great at times, but he was on the way out for sure

Ogunjobi, I forgot he was even here. I was watching the Denver game and he had one stat, an Offside on a turnover

Not many NFL players fit the scheme they were running - hold ‘em to -17 yards on first and second down, then give up 28 on third down. It’s a unique fit.

You made me spill my drink through my nose, 🤣

It shows McDermotts inability or refusal to innovate with his scheme,  our defense going forward will be substantially more entertaining for us to watch vs our opponents…,

3 in the 4th quarter, 2 of which were in single score games

so possibly 1 in garbage time. Maybe.

6 on third down though

In a list of 7…

2 were street free agents due to injury mid season

1 retired

1 didn’t pay here last year

so it’s Tre, Milano and Daquan that you are calling out? Not the strong call out you thought

Its not really and indictement of much other than age.  Most those guys were either at or near end of their careers and also dealt with a lot of late career injuries too.  Doesn't mean they were all bad players here while starting, in fact almost all of them were playing a good to high level while starting for us.  But a year later, fresh off a draft and influx of youth, these guys will start latching on as inuries happen, deficiencies show up, etc.  Plus, older guys like to miss as much of camp as they can most the time, especially ones with injury problems.

We did the right thing getting younger, but I don't think them not being signed really says anything bad about them or their time here.

I think it’s realistic that Tre, Milano and Thompson will be signed as training camps ramp up. They are proven vets who most likely value playing time and aren’t in a rush to sign anywhere. Unfortunately, with unexpected injuries or other players struggling in camp, their phones could ring fairly quickly after the first week of preseason games conclude.

Bosa was a great signing. He played great. The problem is the staff misused him. He’s the one guy that needed to be on a pitch count the entire season. They absolutely wore him out.
