I'm watching Modern Family from start to finish for the first time, part way through season 8 at this point. Just finished an episode with Joe believing there are monsters under his bed, and it got me thinking, what are some of the worst cast additions that do absolutely nothing to make the show better, they just feel like they are making it worse? Mine are all kid related you'll see...

Modern Family - Joe

Married With Children - Seven

Brady Bunch - Cousin Oliver

Happy Days was obsessed with adding OTW characters. Fonzie’s nephew ‘Spike’, his girlfriend ‘Leather Tuscadero’, ‘Mork from Ork’. Thought Mork was a bit much, same with the spin off, but Laverne and Shirley was a decent one imo.

Good point. Laverne and Shirley was a good show but that also got away from the main characters

Any show that added Ted McGinley, he sunk Happy Days, Love Boat and Married With Children

Blasphemy!  Jefferson D'Arcy was light years better than  Steve.

Buck was also a better dog for the Bundy's than Lucky.

I know it was done out of neccessity, but Joe Besser and Curly Joe DeRita.

They were great when it was Moe, Larry, and Curly. They were good when Shemp had to replace Curly. When Shemp died they should have stopped at that point.

Most of Garry Marshall's shows, or those producers who apprenticed under Marshall follow that pattern.  Lose an established character for a new character,  who the producers think will fit better.  'Family Matters' and 'Step By Step' had kids on milk cartons, for chrissake!  And don't dare ask what happened to Richie Cunningham's older brother Chuck! (Either one of them - two actors portrayed him.)

I challenge anyone to find a less talented, more annoying actor than Seven on Married With Children.  It was like nails on a chalkboard any time that kid showed up on screen.  He must have been related to one of the execs.

2 years of Steve vs. 8 of Jefferson.  No matter what anyone thinks of the characters, he definitely did not sink the show.

When I first started watching MWC it was already the episodes with Jefferson and then years later when I saw old reruns of the first couple seasons with Steve I thought he was terrible at first, it was a big switch from Jefferson who was more of a pal for Al.  But over time I came to appreciate Steve as well playing the straight man to the shoe man.  They were two totally different dynamics.

I thought the years with Steve and Jefferson were both good. The only thing I would say about MWC is the show probably went a year or two longer than it should have. The show definitely "jumped the shark" when Seven was added to the cast.
