If you weren't thrilled about the Brady hire as HC do you feel any better about it now?

I was fine with it then and fine with it now. He has made really good Assistant hires. I really like the fact he seems to "Know what he doesnt know" and is surrounding himself with guys like John fox, Pete Carmichael to help him.

 

IF Leonhard gets this defense firing by December, We can be the team to beat (barring injuries), screw the Rams.

Clock management, end of game decisions, sideline demeanor when a call doesn't go their way, coaches challenges.... all major concerns for a rookie HC.

I'm hopefully waiting to see what the season brings, though he does say some things that resonate with me. My biggest problem is that he reminds me so much of this big, goofy drunk fnck I used to work with. Guy broke his neck when he fell off a barstool and didn't realize it for 3 days. And Joe is like a clone of him, looks, speech, mannerisms. Just scary.

I'm not sure anything has changed for me at this point.

 

I'm still at a let's wait and see and TBD stage with Brady until we see how the team actually looks with him under the helm.  All anybody can do right now is speculate.

I don't expect him to totally flame out or anything but I don't know if him taking over the role of HC is enough to move the needle and turn the Bills into a Super Bowl team.  Part of me thinks the team will ultimately achieve around similar results they have been under McDermott it just may look differently.  I am in the camp there are still some major personnel issues that prevent the Bills from taking that next step into Super Bowl contender that go beyond who is the coach.

Yes it was his hires that told me he was able to take advice from experienced people, and potentially change his scheme to increase the players ability to succeed, unlike his former boss.

I did not like the hire initially but I'm definitely rejuvenated with the idea of trying something new. The Raptors and the Knicks were rewarded for daring to be great. 

 

I'm happy they made a change I'm just not sure if we hired the right guy. At the end of the day, the team will form an identity of it's head coach and that is where I have some concerns.

 

Specifically:

- He seems like he trying to be one of the guys instead of the grown up (head coach) in the room

-In his press conferences, talks a lot but says nothing, just empty platitudes. 

-Concerns about his attention to detail

-His haircut and chain bother me 

 

Now, I know the latter is petty but that's just my honest thoughts. I'm looking  for someone to lead a group of men. I hope I'm dead wrong.

 

Overall, I'm excited with the change in coaching along with the infusion of young talent from this rookie class along with last years class.

I don't trust anything that comes from OTAs or training camp.  

 

Ask this question on October 19th.  We will all have a better idea then.  The first six games are brutal with a combination of tough opponents and west coast travel.  If he goes 4-2 to start that would be a great way to begin the year.

I wanted Kubiak but unfortunately I think the rules made it basically impossible for the Bills to get him. They would not have been allowed to even have an initial conversation with him until the day after the Superbowl by which time a couple of teams - most noteably Vegas who were giving him the full press - had interviewed him twice. What if by that point he has already made his mind up? You can say "he'd have waited for the chance to coach Josh" but these are human beings with families too if a team like Vegas is saying we will pay you X and give you Y in terms of control but we need a definite answer by Z...  I'm not sure it is realistic to think someone waits on the off chance an interview with the Bills goes well. 

 

People might say "well Brady would still have been around" if you wait and don't get Kubiak - possibly. But he was in the running in Arizona too. And even more so if you wait you 100% don't get Leonhard as DC and you might miss out on other good coaches who joined the staff too.

Nothing has changed because not 1 game has been played.

 

I understood the Brady pick - I don’t love or hate it until we actually see the impact on Josh - especially early in games where Josh is over amped.  Can his new over amped coach keep Josh level and making the proper reads rather than trying to do way to much and having the zoomies.
 

I also expect that during the regular season the offense/defensive cohesion will be worse and we are going to lose some games we would have won and it is going to cost us seeding, but that only matters if he can’t get us home.
 

In the end the only thing that mattered though is the playoffs and can we make it and can win because if we miss the playoffs due to early season “growing pains” or lose in playoff game 1 - the change was not worth the issues,  it only makes sense if Brady wins and we won’t know that till the end of the year or 2.

Im just looking at this thread now, but agreed.  It will be interesting to see a new staff that is now all descendants of the Sean Payton tree.  Brady has made some good decisions, so for now, it’s wait and see.

I still see the hire as Beane's power move to deflect accountability for the team's shortcomings away from him.

 

As for Brady himself, I will keep an open mind. This does not represent genuine organizational change as we already had the benefit of Brady's intellectual capital as OC.

It’s not a total refresh, but from a coaching perspective it’s 100% different on defense and special teams.

Josh Allen has been at his worst vs the Texans defense over his career.

 

Last year Brady failed to adjust, Josh threw two picks and got sacked 8 times.

He wasn’t my first choice and he wasn’t on my “please god no” list. I was going to be pretty indifferent to most candidates this offseason. I wanted a new voice and didn’t necessarily care who it was. I preferred an offensive mind and someone that believes in attacking, not reacting.
 

He seems to check those boxes but I’m not judging much until the playoffs. I think that the floor is extremely high with Josh Allen so I wasn’t so concerned that this thing would unravel. If Brady can take the next step, great!! If not, in 2 years, I want to try someone else again.

Those are 2 separate things. The firing of McDermott is because he couldn’t get there. Brady not getting there doesn’t make the “McDermott firing a failure.” It makes the “Brady hire a failure.” McDermott needed to go because he couldn’t get it done. Brady not being able to get it done is independent of that.

I meant more the process that they took in firing McDermott, because I felt at the time, and still feel, that if McDermott was fired, Beane should be as well. Clean house. Because I feel the failures of getting to the superbowl have been a personnel issue just as much, if not more, than a coaching issue. Exalting Beane and firing McDermott was nonsensical to me.

 

But let's see how it goes. The message was loud and clear: get to the superbowl or you will get fired. It just depends on how many swings they plan to give Brady at it.
