Nihilarian Posted July 17 Posted July 17 The Buffalo Bills did move on from two winning coaches in the past besides McDermott. A brief history if you care to read it. Chuck Knox was the LA Rams Head Coach for five seasons (1973-1977) and made the playoffs every year he was with LA. After being fired by the LA Rams for not reaching an SB. Buffalo Bills owner Ralph Wilson then hired Knox. This deal paid Knox an annual salary of $200,000 per year, making him one of the highest-paid coaches in the NFL at that time. Mr Wilson was a bit desperate as fans had stopped attending games after two very poor seasons, going 2-12 in 1976 / 3-13 in 1977, and he was unsure if he could keep the team in Buffalo. Knox was a godsend for Buffalo at that time, and in his third season as the new Buffalo head coach, they made the playoffs, going 11-5 in 1980. If anyone remembers that the Buffalo Bills didn't win a game against the Miami Dolphins during the entire decade of the 1970s. That's right, from 1970 to 1979, not one win against Miami. Now, in the 1980 home opener against Miami, the Bills beat Miami 17 to 7, and the goalposts came down in an ultimate rejoicing of that win. Knox spent five seasons as the Bills' HC. Then in 1982, after a strike-shortened season, the Bills went 4-5. Now Knox wanted a pay raise along with an extended contract, knowing what he had done for the franchise and the city of Buffalo with the "talking proud" campaign. Buffalo had been reeling from brutal winters and the story of the "Love Canal", and now, finally, NFL players wanted to come to Buffalo to sign/play. With one year remaining on his initial six-year contract, Knox sought an extension and a clearer commitment from the organization. Now, after all the success of the team, he must have thought he no longer needed Knox. So, Mr Wilson said no to a raise and contract extension. Negotiations stalled, and in January 1983, Knox chose to step down rather than coach in Buffalo during the final, unextended year of his deal. Shortly after leaving, he accepted a new coaching position with the Seattle Seahawks. Knox went on to have some success with Seattle over the next nine seasons. He never did make it to an SB in his time as an HC in the NFL. In 1983, the Buffalo Bills hired their QB coach, Kay Stephenson, to be their new HC. That first year, they went 8-8 with QB Joe Ferguson still in the fold. The following two seasons saw them go back-to-back, 2-14 seasons with Fergy 84, and Vince Ferragamo at QB in 85. Needless to say, the stadium was nearly empty of fans, and the ones who attended most wore bags on their heads. A sad time to be a Bills fan. The next winning Buffalo Head Coach who left was Wade Phillips. In his three seasons in Buffalo, they went 10-6, 11-5, and 8-8. Phillips took over after Marv Levy retired as HC after a 6-10 season in 1997. Wade had Todd Collins and Doug Flutie as QBs. Wade Phillips was fired by Wilson because he refused to fire his ST coach. You know, the "Music City miracle guy in 1999". The next Buffalo HC was Gregg Williams, to Mike Mularkey, to Dick Jauron, to Chan Gailey, to Doug Marrone, to Rex Ryan. We all want the Buffalo Bills to get to a Super Bowl with Josh Allen as QB. The thing is, the entire coaching staff just changed, save the OC, who was promoted to head coach. As of now, my expectations are to wait and see what this new regime brings. But Tom Dempsey missed a 34-yard FG at the end and the Dolphins held on for a 9-7 win at Rich Stadium. As far as missed FGs go in regular season games this was one of the more painful ones given who it was against and a lost opportunity to end the streak. 1 Quote

I actually think Leonhard is the most important piece to the coaching staff. It will be up to him to build a good defense and get them playing to level they need to get over the hump to have a chance to win the Super Bowl. It will also be important to see how Brady manages the game as the HC. When to throw the challenge flag, how he uses his timeouts, substitutions of players coming in and out of the game, in game and half-time adjustments, that turn momentum in the Bills favor when things aren't going well. 2 1 Quote

We will see whether Brady is a leader of men or just a cheerleader. I guess my strongest feeling on the subject is that the results can’t be, and won’t be, that much different. The Bills floor is about 10 wins and ceiling is about 14. I will be really surprised if the regular season looks much different. The Bills made this change in hoping to change a decision here and a play there in the playoffs. They believe, and I 100% agree, there is little downside risk. Teams like the Raiders and Titans are making a change hoping that everything changes. The Bills, and to a lesser degree the Ravens, are hoping that this move can push them a game beyond where they’ve been. Success is judged differently in different situations. That’s why we shouldn’t be comparing this change to Bills coaching changes of the past. Those were akin to the Titans or Raiders. This should be looked at like when the Broncos replaced Fox, Bucs Dungy, etc.. Edited July 17 by Kirby Jackson 1 1 Quote

Chaos Posted July 17 Posted July 17 If Brady can replicate McDermott's regular season success (and maybe prioritize getting the #1 seed until its out of reach), have the team ready and not tight for playoff games, and then not make major coaching blunders in the playoff games, he will be a keeper. He seems as eligible as the next available guy to do that. Quote

You're right though. Josh Allen (see, you can say names) had zero tackles as Achane ran for 174 yards and 2tds. I barely noticed him on defense as Bijan Robinson gashes the D for 170 yards (around 230 total) and a TD. To be fair, in most games there's not an any "one" reason why a team loses. And yes, you can can point to slow (or in the Philly game, zero) performance from the offense and yes, at times erratic play by Allen. That wasn't the topic. It's weird how you felt the need to bash...sort of. The point was if McD was going to implement a defense that invites teams running the ball...you better be able to stop it. Because when you don't, you lose. Those were examples of such games You're right. I guess I got a little nasty. My irritation is not so much with Josh, he's a great QB obviously. I'm also not trying to defend the defense or anyone else. It's just here on TBD it's fine to bash and call out poor play and coaching and gming and ownering, All except Josh that is. there are a gazillion excuses for games he clearly screwed up in or choked in. Turn the football over 4 times in a playoff game and it's the defense or the refs or poor CB substitution's fault. Josh is a big boy and accepts responsibility and admits he screwed up in times like this. Why can't us fans do it too? As you said, there is rarely only one reason a team loses a game. So why not talk about and consider all? Hoping for another 2024 MVP like season from Josh and not another 2025 ... Edited July 17 by reddogblitz 1 Quote

Honest question- Do you expect him to win MVP every year and never to have an "off" playoff game? He wasn;t great against Denver. But at the end of the day the offence scored a lot of points and left the field with 4 minutes left with a 4 point lead. If someone told me the Bills got 27 points at denver and were up 4 with 4 to go, I don't know about you but I sign up for that every time. 1 Quote

Are you stating context and perspective do NOT matter? . @AugieSorry for the late reply, we left on a long camping trip and I basically disconnect from the internet and enjoy the outdoors. Two reasons why I gave the "thumbs down" ... 1) nothing against Brady personally, but if you're going to fire McD, might as well clean the whole staff out. 2) the reference to the Browns would have been ok around 2019; Stefanski coached for 6 years. I happen to like the Browns, my 2nd favorite team Edited July 24 by DrBob806 Quote
Orlando Buffalo Posted July 25 Posted July 25 I don't care nearly as much about Brady as I do about our DC. Our Defense has not been good enough the past 5 years in the playoffs, so Brady will score a lot for sure, but can we stop them when it matters. Quote
BillsFan130 Posted July 25 Posted July 25 (edited) https://youtu.be/w3BkhltVqIY?si=vsvvI9NNd6441uor Interesting 4 minute video from Isiah McKenzie on McDermott. Basically was saying that Sean had everything so mapped and planned out and always followed that plan to a T. And he wished at times, and i quote, he would just "F the plan/process" Referenced the 13 seconds game where Kelce and Mahomes said "F the plan", and just figured things out on the fly. I am very interested to see how we come out of the gate this year. Tough opening matchup in Houston. I feel we owe the Texans a physical beat down. The McDermott led teams did not pay with a lot of bravado in your face attitude. I think against physical teams like the Texans, that is needed. We looked soft against them the past two years in spots. Almost intimidated. We didn’t get an ass kicking score wise. But we didn’t come out and lay the wood to them, and let them know we were coming in like a bunch of marauders. And hide the women and children. CJ Stroud is soft and overrated. and can be beat down physically and mentally. Brady needs to set a tone with the team starting next week at training camp that things will be different under him than under McDermott. Watching Hard Knocks last year, there seemed to be too relaxed an atmosphere at training camp under McDermott. Not a lot of juice nastiness and bite. Even Josh wasn’t fired up and in guys faces on offense or defense. I hope Brady makes things a little uncomfortable for everyone there. Sets a tone that goes throughout the year, and starts with a real strong performance in Houston. I think that would springboard us to a great season. And the league would take notice. 1 Quote
