As Bills fans, the Number 1 Question in our minds is the development and execution of Leonhard's defense. And I'd bet it's the Number 1 Question in HIS mind, because no one - including Leonhard - knows which pieces are going to fit where and when. This is largely a blank canvas. So that's OUR conundrum, and we'll collectively chew on that for the next 2 1/2 months (or more). If I'm a Pats* fan, OR if I'm a Texans fan, what's my Number 1 Question? Pretty simple..."What the hell happened to my quarterback in the playoffs, and should I be worried?" Stroud wasn't an NFL player in his final game, and Maye wasn't in HIS final game. You can woof and bark about Doubs and Brown and the Houston Defense all afternoon. That's just a lot of whistling past the graveyard. As Bills fans, we'd be sick to our stomach with worry if we had quarterback questions like that. Very quietly, I want to point out that Josh Allen was pretty bad in HIS final game last year, too. A typical Josh game beats Denver, period, and then the Bills just have to win the rubber match against the Pats, which I think they would, to get to the SB. Maybe the lesson is that teams whose QBs don't play well in a playoff game have a tough time winning. 1 Quote
stuvian Posted June 29 Posted June 29 I don't consider this offseason to be over but for a team that is supposedly on the cusp we look very complacent in light of watching moves by the Rams, Bengals and Ravens. The Patriots moves were expected and not world beating but Vrabel and Maye are going to be with us for a long time it seems. Longer than it takes for a Dianna Russini hickey to disappear. Quote

I guess I'd counter along the lines of Allen being an established entity in the league. You're right - all QBs have a bad (atypical) day. It happens. But Allen has shown over a number of years now that his typical performance level is otherworldly. Maye and Stroud? Still pretty new. I would personally find their performances unsettling as a fan, and would be holding my breath for a few weeks of the season to see if the trajectory changes. In fairness, I'd be more worried about Stroud than Maye. JFC, he was awful. Quote

Meanwhile, the Bills haven't done much of anything to signal they'll be any better than they were last year. One could even argue that they'll take a step back after firing head coach Sean McDermott. Josh Allen is Superman on the football field, but he's going to need more than D.J. Moore and a middle-of-the-road defense to fly high enough to reach his first Super Bowl…. The Bills have to be seeing the moves being made by the Patriots, and it would be hard to imagine them feeling good about their offseason in relation to the competition. They are now faced with a situation where the Patriots have one of the best young quarterbacks in the league in Drake Maye and a top-10 defensive unit that gave Allen problems last season. Will the Bills ever wake up and realize fighting fire with fire is much better than laying the hopes and dreams of an entire franchise on the shoulders of one man?” Do you think this is justified or comically arrogant? I mean this is one of those through the lens of a bias perspective things. Pats moves are not that impressive, Maye is no lock to keep ascending this year after fading some down the stretch, and Bills are much better shape heading into this season than they were coming out of last season. And this person is ciminally undervaluing the DJ Moore impact. Its not just his presence here as a weapon for Allen, its what he does for the rest of the offense now. Kincaid and Shakir will even better not having to be the focus of the defense now and can play their most suited roles. Even Keon goes from an after thought to having optimistic potential being able to play a role more suited for him rather than them having to try and force him into being a WR1. Same with Palmer who gets to be more of a WR4 now instead of forced to be WR2. And all of this makes life easier on Josh and helps the NFLs leading rusher as well in Cook. Now add in a new coaching perspective and an upgraded defensive scheme, and there is a lot to be optimistic about. Pats should still win 9-10 games with 4 easy wins against Jets and Miami alone. But I think the Bills will not only win the division, but its also never going to be in any real doubt as I expect Bills to win both Pats games. 2 Quote

I think in large respects is accurate, the Patriots got better I believe (we will see how the drafted players play out) there is coaching uncertainty may be better may be worse... Schedule is tough... but clearly tougher for both teams... I do not think they are factoring that in... The fight fire with fire is a bit out there... we did go out for years and sign folks to bad contracts in an attempt to get over the hump, we now have cap issues and cannot possibly compete on the FA market with teams that have massive cap space. This strategy failed miserably for Beane/McD in so much as we simply have been very poor at acquiring defensive and WR talent via FA and that has strung our CAP out to a bad place. Add in that the drafting has been medicore at best in these area's and you have a situation where its tough to get better. I think this may be Beane's year to put up or shut up. So bottom line, they are not wrong, but the post fails to recognize that our sitting tight isnt because we dont see the lack of supremely talented people, rather we were bad at acquiring it. They also over estimate the impact of their schedule on their W/L if the equal the W/L last year this year color me impressed... Quote

We're talking about which which teams are the dominant teams at any given time in the league. The Texans do not fall in that category, because they're offense was not what it needed to be. As the season progressed, I think Denver moved into that category, because Nick was doing a good job and because their defense was excellent. Maybe the Broncos there, but the point is that there were few teams in that category, and the Patriots were not among them. Quote

The Pats had one good season, based on won-loss. They played an extremely easy schedule. They absolutely didn't want the Bills in the playoffs. Roster changes in the off-season are over-rated. They always are. So, I'm not buying that their team has made any kind of quantum leap, at all. If you want to talk roster changes, the Bills are now putting Moore and Chubb on the field against the Pats, and that may be more important than any changes the Pats made. As others have said, the Bills are the big dog, and everyone outside of New England understands that. Pats fans can chatter all they want, but it doesn't mean anything until they win the AFCE this coming season. Until then, they're still the underdog. Dead nuts. Furthermore, they ought to be a little more grateful to the Bills seeing as we put them in the Super Bowl. Without that broken leg, the Pats get buried at mile high. Quote

I think everything kinda fell the pats way last year and they’re gonna regress a pretty good amount tbh. Feels like they’re underselling that to nitpick the bills. pats fans don’t want to see it so they’re only looking at half the equation to question why the bills are favored in most places pats had a generational run of good luck last year…bengals with no burrow and Chase suspended,Lamar goin out at halftime, historically easy schedule because they were very bad the year before, chargers beat to hell in the playoffs, dolphins straight up tanking, Bo nix breaking his ankle the week before the afc championship and so on. It was honestly wild haha you hear a lot of ‘the schedules were only 3 games different’ but it was really closer to 5 games different regular season then they got a huge gift in the afc championship (caused by the bills ironically enough 😂) 2 Quote

I remember when Judge was a rookie and they were expecting another lengthy dynasty. And you are right, the Patriots fans are the same way. When Jones flashed a little poise, they were ready to run the Division for 20 more seasons.... now with Maye, same thing. It is theirs to lose and the bumbling other fools in the AFC East are doomed for irrelevance. The fact is, the architect of that Pats dynasty, as well as the stone cold ice in the veins QB are long gone and it will be impossible to get anywhere near that kind of run again. With a top QB, you get a decade of competing for it, and depending on how good the conference is each year, maybe a few shots at a Superbowl. I remember feeling this way a little bit after the Bills' 90s teams. The next few Superbowls when the Steelers and Chargers were in it, it felt like they were just keeping our seat warm. Built a great defense at the end of the century and I expected them to be back... but then... the drought. I would feel good if I were a Pats fan after the season they had and the respective offseasons. I feel fine as a Bills fan too. Quote

Success Posted June 29 Posted June 29 I'll go w/ "comically arrogant" - which describes not only that article, but the vast majority of that fanbase as well. They had a nice year against the easiest schedule in decades, but they'll be back in 2nd for the foreseeable future. Maye is a good QB, but he's really not a great QB yet, and there isn't much indication he'll ascend to that tier. Quote
Playoffs? Posted June 29 Posted June 29 The Pats had money to spend. So did we when Allen was on his rookie contract. I do wish we had one more scary receiver…. But Allen DOES have a top tier running back, two solid pass catching tight ends (one of which is a force and needs to stay healthy), a formidable line, and hopefully Moore that can command double coverage. Our offense can create mismatches, and some pressure should be able to come off JA. The Pats offense was historically bad in the playoffs. I’m still so mad about our broncos game, because there is zero doubt in my mind we would’ve won that snow game in New England. 2 1 Quote

Success Posted June 29 Posted June 29 On 6/26/2026 at 10:02 AM, Shaw66 said: There's something else that's worth saying here, and that's about Drake May. The NFL has completely changed over the last 10 years or so. It used to be the case that quarterbacks had to play in the league for several years before they started playing really well. That changed with Mahomes, and since that time we've had a series of quarterbacks come into the league who were very good to outstanding in their rookie or second season. The fans and the press anoint these people as though they are already booked into the Hall of Fame. The reality has been that after a year or two, those quarterbacks either hit a plateau or actually slide back into the middle of the pack. Thinking the Patriots are an annual Super Bowl contender because they have Drake May at quarterback may be accurate, but recent experience in the NFL has suggested that outstanding early performance does not necessarily mean you have a great franchise quarterback. May has not yet proven himself to be an elite quarterback; in fact, it is impossible to prove yourself an elite quarterback in the first couple of years. He still has a lot to accomplish before he's in the elite category. He's less likely to prove himself to be a star in the next two years then he is likely to be traded even up for the kid in Houston. If I was a Pats fan - I'd be alarmed by the playoff run. They basically got a lay-up when it came to opponents on the AFC side, and he played pretty poorly throughout. He holds the ball too long and has a pretty clear turnover issue. His biggest strength is the accurate deep ball, and he's really good at that. That can be a tough skill to maintain. I don't think he's all that. I see more Bledsoe than Brady, if we're comparing him to past Pats QB's. Good arm & will have longevity, but won't be a consistent top 5 QB. 1 Quote

Can I ask why Pats fans don’t? In 2 seasons with Maye they have gone farther than the Bills have with Allen EVER. Now Inhave said the Bills were their own worst enemy last year but will a new coach change the turnover issue that ultimately destroyed the Bills season? Meanwhile in the offseason the Bills paid a hefty price for Moore to be their WR1 and the Pats did the same with getting Brown but they also improved and got Dobbs as a better WR2 and still have Douglas, Boutte and Henderson. At RB the bills stayed pat as did NE both have very good RB rooms the Bills is better as is the Bills TE room. Point is the Pats fans have every reason be overly optimistic they way over achieved last year and before anyone mentions the schedule remember the Pats were one of those cans for 2 straight years so yes still an unexpected and amazing results to make it to the SB even with your young QB hurt through most of the playoffs and your starting LT was on one leg. 2 Quote

Lmao if every fan base could only be proud and think their team is amazing when the “experts” think so then 28 out of 32 teams fans be quiet. The Bills and Ravens are the favorites! Really? A team with QB on the downside in Jackson and really under performed every year with him in the playoffs… meanwhile Pat fans whose team stunk beyond bad for 2 years does a miracle turn around and makes it to the SB, yes got absolutely destroyed because be honest they shouldn’t have been there but Buffalo the only true test in the AFC found a way to lose a game they had absolutely no right in losing. But Pat fans shouldn’t be hopeful but the teams that constantly find ways to lose should be? (FYI you should but the reasoning makes no sense) 1 1 Quote
