Ray Stonada Posted June 14 Posted June 14 As everybody is no doubt aware, one of New York State's *other* iconic teams, the NY Knickerbockers, had their most inspiring season and got the chip yesterday. They dominated like no other team in history in the playoffs. Crazy, because they had no player who seemed like a superstar, except Jalen Brunson. I think there are some lessons to be learned from them, and the coaching job Mike Brown did: 1) One superstar who can carry you in the clutch is huge--theirs was Brunson, ours is Josh, no problem there. 2) Regular season domination is highly overrated. The Knicks lost 9 of 11 in January. Better to play and learn together, and ebb and flow in preparation for the playoffs. The Knicks got huge contributions from unsung guys who felt trusted. Joe Brady, take note. 3) A coach who is in tune with his players is major. Mike Brown is a player's coach, he gets them and does not work them into the ground at practice. (It's practice! Practice!) 4) Lineup changes when players (even starters) aren't doing well can be major. The Spurs were a great team, but Brown switched it up a few times and it revitalized the Knicks. The Bills need to remember that when guys like Joey Bosa or Josh Palmer become liabilities late in the season. 5) A coaching change can do wonders. The Knicks got good under Tom Thibodeaux. Led them to 50 win seasons and the Eastern Conference finals, but got outcoached in the playoffs. The Knicks fired him and hired Mike Brown, a more intuitive guy, one year ago. The Knicks got over the hump his first year. 6) Your schemes should help your superstar, not burden them. Here is a quote from Brown, about Jalen Brunson: “It’s my job as a coach to fit whatever scheme we have on both sides of the floor to all of our players, and if you’re a great player, I’ve got to make a little bit more adjustments or I’ve got to give a little bit more than you do. And we finally got to a point where he was comfortable, I was comfortable. … The regular season is about finding your way so you can prepare for this time of the year, and there’s going to be a lot of ups and downs." Well, Brunson dominated the playoffs and scored 45 in the game to clinch the title. Long story short, the Bills have had a number of problems similar to the Knicks, who figured it out. We gotta hope Brady will unleash the Bills, and especially Josh, like Brown unleashed the Knicks and Brunson. I truly believe this could be the start of a historic run of champ by both teams. Josh Allen will go down as a Marino and make the HOF but he won't have the Super Bowl appearance like Marino had unless he plays for another team. I hope I am wrong. Miyagi-Do Karate Posted June 14 Posted June 14 This is not meant to take away from how awesome the Knicks run was. But the Knicks should have lost like at least 10 of the playoff games they actually won. Their run was magical and filled with clutch play by not only Brunson, but some of their other key players. But they will never replicate what they just did. So I am not sure any other teams (even NBA teams) are looking to them as a model. 1 Quote

Brown is much more of player's coach. As in the NFL, good NBA teams - those with a solid lineup - usually switch it up from one type to the other, and typically the better the lineup the better the "player's coach" fares. 2 1 Quote

Coaching in the NBA is important it's not as important as in the NFL It's a player driven League everybody admits that. BUT Maybe it's the winning way... If you have the unselfishness to leave 115 million on the table so your team could re sign and bring in three really good players... Anytime JA17 wants to take a pay cut he’s free to do so, especially considering he has deals with New Balance, Gatorade, Verizon, Snickers, Buffalo Wild Wings, Cash App, Beats by Dre, Gillette, Frito-Lay, and Subway. But I just don't see it I believe the bills blew a massive opportunity last season. A relatively "easy" path to the superbowl and absolutely blew it against Denver.
