Yeah.....nothing groundbreaking here. But it still gets me excited because it's just another reminder that for the first time in a long time we will be an attack minded defense. No more letting the offense dictate and then trying to adapt what to what they are doing. The only thing in this video I see being a little different, mainly because of available personnel, is that I don't see our front doing a lot of 2 gapping because we just don't have a true nose to do it. I think Walker and Sanders can do it a bit, but it's not their strong suit. That said, I think you are just going to see guys shooting gaps trying to cause havoc in the backfield. So while we may not be able to play exactly the style Leonhard wants to play out of the box, I do think our secondary has the potential to be very good. If the 4-5 rushers we're sending do get caught from time to time, I think the secondary can bail them out from time to time. Where I do worry about not having that 2 gapping nose, though, is in the run game. If we get caught shooting gaps and the RB gets away from all the trash in the backfield, they could be off and running. But honestly, that's a risk I am happy taking after years of passive 2 deep zone defense. Swing for the fences....... You get burned a couple times, so be it. But if you can take the ball away and get off the field more, all that does is give the best player on the planet, Josh Allen, more chances to score. I'll take that trade-off any day. H2o Posted June 13 Posted June 13 I am excited with this new defensive alignment for exactly the first reasons they talked about, the pressure possibilities up front. There are really no double teams and I feel like opposing offenses will be kept completely off balance because you'll never know for certain where the rush is going to be coming from. I really think we are all going to love this new swarming and chaotic style of defense we will see this year. 1 1 Quote

unbillievable Posted June 13 Posted June 13 Didn't realize that 17 (now 18) teams use a 3-4 base defense. It doesn't show on TV because teams are in nickle and dime personnel most of the time. So they need to adjust the definition. Doesn't matter if you are a 3-4 defense when a safety or corner replaces linebackers on almost every play. The days of front 7 is over. Should be front-6 or front-5 base defense. 1 Quote

Rex Ryan was one of the best defensive minds of the last 20+ years. Sadly, he didn't put it all together or give the effort of his potential. The designs and his methods were simple. They were like Dick LeBeau or many others that ran simplicity with solid execution. This solid execution was a disciplinary point rex couldn't enforce. I am eager to see what Leonhard brings to us. Yes but Rex's also was way too over complicated FOR THE PLAYERS , great in theory, lousy in reality. He spent too much time trying to prepare for witty press conferences instead of, actually doing the work.. Quote

PoundingDog Posted June 13 Author Posted June 13 It reminded me the Josh Allen interview at the mini camp, someone (might be Carucci) asked him his thoughts of the Bills defense - because the only people who have faced the Leonard's Buffalo Bills defense so far is Bills' offense. Josh said something like you have to have a very good pre-snap read, and if you don't have good pre-snap read, you better have a really good post-snap read. Quote
