Bills' Mouth Piece on What They Are Expecting to See in the 2026 Season

Yes I know, the Bills play-by-play caller talking to the Bills sideline reporter. What do you expect them to say, right?

 

But I do find some interesting viewpoints.

 

Brown mentioned CJGJ calling out people, which got him trouble in other places, causing locker room issue. But it might be something the Bills actually need and I don't mind overshooting a bit. The Bills are known as a big family, buddies hanging out outside of work. It might not be natural to calling out people in front of everyone, even you think the person deserved to be called out. CJGJ would probably do that without hesitation, getting into their faces, including coaches. It is certainly not something you want it all the time and the person can be more tactful. But the fact is we had no one in the past (i.e. the Cincy playoff game) willing to stand up. I know Diggs had a bit of that and got into trouble as well. We never had someone like that on defense, period. We need to inject some emotion at certain times. And ... CJGJ, like Brown said, has some silver ware to show his credibility.

 

I also like Tasker's point of how to play the young guys as both of them admitted there will a lot of young guys playing on defence. Let them play free, make mistakes and learn from it. It is the fastest way to get used to NFL. They didn't mention the name but we know McDermott would hesitate to play rookies unless he's very sure they would not make mistakes, which means putting a lot of pressure on those rookies to play in hesitation to not make mistakes. That make a lot of sense. Play free, expect to make mistakes. Maximize your physical traits. By the time playoff comes around, maybe they get the system down by then.

Mcdermotts defence was predicted on everyone doing their job and sticking to it and never deviating. 
 

Our new defense is predicted on chaos so the mistakes won’t be as noticeable . I think that will allow the rookies and 2nd year players a better opportunity to just go out and execute

I think it's completely possible to play new guys who make mistakes AND show improvement. Chaos will help stay a bit unpredictable. Especially on 3rd and long.

So the ideology would be there are acceptable mistakes in the learning curve. That’s a pretty fine line. How many mistakes can a coach be willing to risk in a 17 game season? Not too many.

Yea it's the Cole Bishop two years ago thing. People were clamouring to get him on the field more but he literally cost them the Houston game. He made two major mistakes for two touchdowns. It'd easy for fans to sit there and say "let them take their lumps." Trust me when you are the coach ultimately responsible for results and there are mutliple livelihoods at stake.... you soon think differently. Every coach in the NFL except those overseeing a total rebuild would have benched him again after that game.

The biggest learning that I think needs to happen is with the DL and the linebackers stopping the running game, they really can’t get much worse at stopping the run as everyone we faced seemed to have a career day so I’m happy to let the younger guys take their licks there. Same for the pass rush, it can’t get much worse so let them reign chaos.

The secondary is a bit different as it’s better and holds the defence together, we can’t afford big mistakes there every week

I agree.  I was not usually a trash talker when young, but if someone was chatting me up, I made sure to hit the guy even harder on the field.  When I wrestled, if the guy was cheap, I’d bite him on the back when the ref wasn't looking.  It usually shuts them up.  Besides, CJGJ is just trying to get under people’s skin.  If he’s smart,he’ll keep that stuff for the opponent, not his own teammates.

The Bills did need a loud voice on defense, call people out and get fired up. I can see where it might get annoying over the course of a season but the defense needed some fire. I’m excited to see the younger players play and play fast and aggressive. The players seemed to be thinking too much under McD and afraid to make a mistake. They played back on their heels too much in more of a contain, keep everything in front of you style of play. It was death by a thousand cuts against good qb’s. I much prefer an aggressive, physical attack defense. I don’t care if they occasionally get caught out of position and give up the big play. McD seemed terrified of giving up the big play and it resulted in teams dunking and dunking down the field and the Bills relying on penalties or a dropped pass to get a stop while Allen sits on the bench waiting for a stop. I think they are going to produce more turnovers and big plays under Leonard.

True, Bishop was awful that game. But I think he was also battling some injuries and when healthy he came back stronger than ever. He took his lumps and learned from them.

They are also preping Bills Mafia of the prospect of KEO starting in front of Dorian Williams. It would certainly be a surprise that out of all the draft picks last 2 years, a 4th rounder starts for you.

 

The take on Landon Jackson is also a bit surprising. Is he really the ideal physical fit as 3-4 DE on this team? I'm sure Oliver and Walker would be ranked ahead of him, if Walker is not asked to play NT.

He was not good his rookie year. There were signs of progress against the run later in the year but he sucked in coverage every time he was out there. In fairness he missed most of camp. His camp and pre-season last year was absolutely critical for his development and then Poyer getting into the lineup and giving him a proper vet to play off. Some rookies are not ready year 1. Bishop was one of those. Going into this year he is our top safety, it all worked out.

Give Allen two short fields a game and the offense will light it up.
