Sierra Foothills Posted June 8 Posted June 8 (edited) Last month the Bills released Maddux Trujillo meaning that as of today, Tyler Bass is the only kicker on the roster. It seems that with his injury history that the Bills should bring in another leg for training camp to reduce his workload if not for actual competition. While reading PFT this morning I see where the kicker for the UFL's Louisville Kings, Tanner Brown kicked two 60 yard field goals to help his team advance to the title game. I know in recent topics, a fairly high percentage of posters have said that they'd be more comfortable with the supposedly retired Matt Prater than with Bass. T master Posted June 8 Posted June 8 AS with any other athlete that has had a injury we at least need to give him a minute to see what he does in OTA's & mini camp, the guy has been pretty good for the Bills since he's got here so I would hope the benefit of the doubt would be ab;e to be given to him . That being said I would think knowing Beane the way ewe do that there will be another kicker as there usually is in camp for competition & that Bass still being under contract will be able to prove weather he is the same kicker he was when they drafted him . He sat all last season & one would believe that he should be fully healthy & I believe that if he has in any way fallen off from what he was they won't hesitate to send him walking if he isn't up to the standards they need him to be !! 1 Quote
juno999 Posted June 8 Posted June 8 I don’t have much confidence in Bass even before his injury. I was hoping for some kicking competition at training camp but I guess not. Perhaps he’s kicking at a level where he’s reduced the Bills brass's concerns at the position. Hence they released the other guy. Certainly going to be something to monitor. 1 2 Quote

I think he was like a professional soccer player and then showed up in the USFL or XFL or whatever it’s called. Now he’s the best kicker in the world. Bring that kid in and let him compete. Gregg Posted June 8 Posted June 8 Hopefully the new stadium is more "wind friendly" when it comes to Bass or any Bills kicker trying to make kicks. On the negative side the opposing team's kickers will also enjoy that as well assuming the new stadium will be "wind friendly" to kickers. 1 1 Quote

Aubrey and Turpin have both been great in their special teams roles. Unfortunately, the Bass contract until recently has been tough to get out from. One of the worst ones Beane has handed out. We could move on this year for minimal savings, he will almost certainly be gone after this season when we can save 4.3 million upon cutting him. 3 Quote
transient Posted June 8 Posted June 8 The best thing about Bass was before he became a head case we got to see gifs of Dan Aykryod grinning about blending up a fish. Since he came down with the yips and now with the injury, unless he's looking lights out in OTAs, they should definitely be lining him up against some competition. If he can't take the pressure of a training camp battle for his job then why would anyone think he can handle the pressure of a very makeable game tying kick against KC in the playoffs. 1 Quote

He gets a paycheck, and can cut some time knocking balls in the goalposts. He can stay ready, but not too much time to wear him out. When as it’s not an if at this point, Bass falters, we have a tried and true kicker. Heck, if it’s only 1/2 or 1/3 the season is well worth the $150,000. Quote

thenorthremembers Posted June 8 Posted June 8 Had they moved on from him after he started having the Yips in 2023, we may have been in the Super Bowl in 2024. Given his issues were abundant and obvious in both the 2023 and 2024 regular seasons, he absolutely should have been cut after the missed kick in the 2024 AFC Championship game. He hasn't been a good kicker since 2022 and the fact that its 2026 and we are still talking about the guy is one of the biggest black eyes on our front office. 2 2 Quote
frostbitmic Posted June 8 Posted June 8 I remember saying "that's some damn fine Bass" after his kicks, then in 2023 I started saying it less, in 2024 I lost faith in him. Sitting out the 2025 season with injury doesn't improve my faith in him for 2026. I expect legitimate competition for the Kicker job in camp. Quote
