Worst Bills QB to play in the last 30 years

I was having a conversation about "Captain Checkdown" Trent Edwards and with Nathan Peterman's retirement, it made me think, who was the least capable Bills QB to dress (and play) and why?  My vote was for Billy Joe Hobert who openly admitted he didn't know the playbook and proceeded to get cut the next day.  But there are a lot of good choices.

You beat me too it. Pound-for-pound he's #1 just based on ROI.

 

If a Jeff Tuel sucks, no big deal, but a first-rounder sucking as much as EJ did is catastrophic for a team.

I remember he did have a real good game against the Jets later on in his rookie year and thought he did alright that year all things considered.  

 

After that though he was brutal I agree.  But in his defense the coaching staff at that time did him no favors.

EJ was a terrible pick (probably one of our biggest 1st round busts), but he at least had some resemblance of a capable quarterback.  We had some real doozies who somehow found their way into a game.

Is it worst player or furthest from good based on assets used? Peterman is by miles the worst QB. He was, at least at one point, statistically the worst QB in NFL history!! It wasn’t like, “he wasn’t very good.” At one point, he was the worst QB to ever play. 
 

You could make the argument that Losman or EJ was more damaging because of resources but as a player it’s Peterman by 100 miles.

As I recall, BJ Hobart was called upon in relief & did poorly which by his own admission was likely due to being unprepared.  As a result, he had a VERY short tenure.  Peterman was chosen to start and had an epically & historically bad statistical performance & by eye he was pretty dang poor too.  He somehow managed to stick around for awhile (& somewhat surprisingly managed to stick around in the league for several years).  I voted for Peterman.

I went with Cardale Jones because he had some hype coming out of Ohio State.  Never saw anything from him even remotely approaching QB competency.  Peterman was absolutely snakebit.  I saw him put the ball on Pat "breasts on a bull" DiMarco pretty as you please, only for it to bounce into the hands of a waiting defender.  If I remember right, it started the ball rolling on Peterman's 4 INTs in the first half game.

Brian Brohm. Zero TDs, and 5 INTs during his starts. Combined passer rating of a 26, worse even than Peterman's.

I think it was Peterman’s last game withe the Bears where he had to step in late and manage a come back win. He dropped like four straight dimes to good receivers who all dropped them. Every one was a game winner. One of the AC/DC guys was a total klutz.

 

Coincidentally, the pass to Clay which he drop/battted into the defender’s arms against the Bears when he filled in a few games after the 5 pick day was comically bad luck.

 

He sucked and had a weak as hell arm, but man that was mostly some kind of spell that was cast on him.

Peterman is the only bills QB that at the time of them playing I couldn’t even talk myself into any false hope. All time bad QB.

I can still remember, before we knew anything about how good Josh Allen really was, many didn’t want him to play at all in his rookie season.  It took that one game seeing how bad Peterman was in the opener against the Ravens in 2018 for that all to change.

I voted Cardale Jones because if I was starting a team today, he'd be the last QB on the list that I'd pick.

However, Nathan Peterman has a special place in my heart.  I never saw a QB throw five picks in the first half of his first start.  It was truly something special, like seeing a Snow Leopard or some other rare beast.

 

At the time, I thought it I was watching the moment an NFL player played himself out of the league.  Yet he lasted for several years after that memorable performance.

It wasn't even a full game, Peterman was benched with 11 minutes left in the 3rd Q. By that point in the game the Bills offense had 18 yards and we were trailing 40-0 on the scoreboard. 

 

Still unbelievable that McD actually chose to start the guy when we had other healthy QBs on the roster. Multiple times.
