Chandler#81 Posted June 4 Posted June 4 (edited) 2 letters. OJ As we open a brand new stadium, we look back at the opening season for Rich Stadium. An absolute palace compared to the dilapidated War Memorial Stadium on Best Street in downtown Buffalo. Simpson led the League in rushing the previous year and Lou Saban kept adding bruising OL to bolster the rushing game. Side notes: I was in my seat in time to see Herb Mul-key return the initial KO in preseason for a TD because my uncle was a cop and his buddies in OP opened a path allowing us to race to the stadium and I celebrated my 18th birthday attending the Eagles game vs Roman Gabriel -yes, I’m very old.. with the Electric Company, we turned on the Juice! I’ll never forget how excited Van Miller got when Juice was hemmed in deep in the backfield vs the Colts only to see OJ slip, dip and scoot 70+ yards for a TD! Rookie QB Joe Ferguson had replaced Dennis Shaw and we went on a tear culminating in 3000 rushing yards and OJ’s 2003 yard season! Enjoy! Our week 7 game -our 1st ever MNF game. My dad -still with us at 93, took me to this one as well! Edited June 4 by Chandler#81 4 2 Quote

US Egg Posted Thursday at 09:36 PM Posted Thursday at 09:36 PM (edited) It was a magical season. Simpson finally validated his #1 pick, captivated the sports world, lifted a downtrodden fan base and an economically depressed WNY, lots were losing jobs, it put Buffalo on the sports map. It ranks up there with the SB seasons. Edited Thursday at 09:43 PM by US Egg 1 1 Quote
oldmanfan Posted Thursday at 09:52 PM Posted Thursday at 09:52 PM I sat in my seat 5 minutes before Mul-Key’s return. And watching the Juice against the Chiefs was incredible. But when he passed 2000 was the memory of a lifetime. 1 1 Quote

LOL... you are not old, 70 is the new 50 😄; I'm just about 6 months behind you, already hit the mark. 🦬 Lucky you still having your dad around, mine fell short of making it to 90. 1 1 Quote
shane nelson Posted Friday at 01:39 PM Posted Friday at 01:39 PM That was also the same season the NFL lifted the blackout rule if the stadium sold out 72 hours before kickoff. Living in Toronto, watching OJ and the beautiful new stadium made me a huge Bills fan. Started going to games in '74 and now a season ticket holder since 1981. 1 3 Quote

Wallace Francis returning a KO for a TD…and the Tom Dempsey shank at the end. 27-26 win. 1 Quote
