Maye is a good QB. he's very obviously a tier below the Allen/Mahomes types and I don't think any sane person would argue otherwise. But yeah he was historically bad in the playoffs and feasted on an easier schedule last year. This year is going to be a great test for him. My guess is he always remains in the middle of that second tier (which is good enough)

well, hoping he acts like a fool with the Pats as well.  typically traded players are on their best behavior the first season as long as they were ok with where they were going.  we shall see.  i dont see Brown being any better for Maye than Diggs was.

What is funny is they played a very similar schedule to the Bills last year. The Pats had the easiest and Bills second easiest. All but three games were the same and you could argue playing against the Bills twice should be considered harder than Bills playing the Pats, if the Bills are so much better.

Really tough to predict Maye's trajectory. I will say it's a bad sign when a player suddenly regresses badly. I can't remember any cases where a QB regressed that badly and still became a top level QB. Allen is the gold standard of QB improvement. If you split his first two seasons into roughly four sets of 8 games, each set was better than the last, and then in year three he hit the moon. There were bad games sprinkled in but the trajectory was obvious. Maye on the other hand didn't just have a bad game or two, he was awful for pretty much the entire last month of the season and especially in the playoffs. I was one that was praising Maye in the middle of last season and thought some Bills fans were being too dismissive of the talent he had shown, but that last stretch of games gives me pause. It is kind of like CJ Stroud. The talent is there but he is going to need to prove he can find some of that early magic again before I am going to just buy in. I'm not making any predictions on the Pats this year because I really have no idea which direction Maye will go.

When we speak of QB regression do you realize since Josh threw 37 TD's in 2020 he's gotten progressively worse each season? He's thrown 36, 35, 29, 28 and 25 TD passes each season since. His yardage per season has dropped also each year from 2020. That is regression. Drake is only going into his 3rd season with more weapons around him. It definitely will be interesting to see what happens but I think the Pats and Bills will have a legitimate rivalry into the future. It will be fun to watch.

Yes, there has been a statistical regression.

What do you attribute it to?

Change of OC, talent around him possibly? Philosophy of run first perhaps? Interesting deep dive look though. Like any other QB teams and their defenses become familiar how to defend certain QB's. Brady was pressure up the middle, Mahomes is keep him in the pocket as a couple of examples.

Do you think the regression in statistics is reflective of a drop in Josh's effectiveness as a passer?

The reason I ask is that his yards and TDs has decreased  but I think it's because his passing attempts have also gone down.

Looking more closely, last season his completion percentage was a career high and to my eye, he's a better passer than he's ever been before.

I often see this point being made about the similarity in schedule, but the difference and the reason why the weak schedule doesn’t mean the same thing for the Bills is that Buffalo has a proven track record of 11+ win seasons six years in a row regardless of the schedule.

Patriots have yet to prove they’re in that same conversation.

It’ll be interesting to see if teams continue to throw more cover 6 at him.  He was one of the worst qbs in the league against cover 6

some teams seem to not sway from what they like to do on defense no matter what but it feels like any team that threw a heavy dose of cover 6 at him down the stretch was crazy successful with it.

Those three different opponents were about as different as they could be though to be fair lol the three teams the pats got were absolutely dreadful and the bills got some perennially great teams.  Three games against three good teams instead of three horrendous teams has a huge impact on a division race.

I don’t believe bills were second easiest either granted some of that is cuz they got the pats twice..i gotta doublecheck though i had it all in a spreadsheet somewhere 😂. I think if the pats didn’t exist last year people woulda been all over the broncos schedule instead which also ended up being one of the easiest a team has had in the last 5 years or so.

The bills were like 6th or 7th easiest last season going from memory.  Bears and chargers were two other playoff teams with easier schedules than Buffalo on top of Denver and NE…can’t remember who the other team was

This makes sense, but yet against common opponents the Bills did worse.

I think Maye is going to be the new Ryan tannehill. Physically gifted but I don’t see the obsessive drive to win like Brady.

No one in the NFL has the obsessive drive to win like Brady!  I disagree about Tannehill, he already looks better than Tannehill ever did

I think people are saying Maye isn’t that good and had an easy schedule to can’t do it again more in hope than expectation.

I hope he sucks too guys, but let’s be realistic here, he’s very good and his second season was far better than Josh’s, he’s gonna be good for years so we’ll have to be better too

It’s not an insult it’s a personality trait. Tannehill was physically talented. I’ll  put Herbert and Lawrence in this same category. They all look bored out there and not psychopaths like manning, mahomes, Allen, Brady. But Sam darnold always looked like that to me too and he won a SB so you never know.

Maybe a little bit of both but the run game certainly has become a larger part of the offense. His accuracy has improved over the seasons but he still has a tendency to force the ball on key possessions or try to do too much (hero ball).

I think that's definitely

1) definitely true, not arguing with the conclusion

2) huge fun, it's a large part of what makes him great to watch

3) something that will never stop unless and until we win it. It's a desperate franchise and fanbase partly due to history and partly due to the ugly possibility of having a bad bad mofo at QB and still not winning even one. That desperation is going to show up in the teams performance, and understandably so maybe

4) something that even he would openly say it would be nice not to have to do because he had a reliable WR1 who will actually be open on 3rd and important...
