Josh Gordon, WR for the Browns (and others). The guy was a dumb*** but really he only harmed his own lungs.

Crash a car, leave the scene, no worries. Smoke a Doobie, well you're doomed.

I see he Chiefs and Patriots on his resume. Standard.

Seriously though, you have to be some kind of INSANE to not put down the bong for a few contacts totaling over a hundred million $$ easily. The guy was a bonafide superstar WR talent. The dumb rule is archaic, but so is not accepting gazillions of dollars to not smoke for ten years, and then live the rest of you live on a freaking weed farm if that’s what turns you on.

Weird thing is he was a supplemental draft pick by Cleveland, teams knew he had issues, the Browns took a chance.

He was suspended 2.5 seasons in Cleveland. They finally gave up on him ( had to). I wonder if he was with GB, NE, Pittsburgh, he gets the same treatment by Goodell....my guess is no.

The nfl would not do the Josh Gordon thing under the current guidelines and rules.  Not defending the nfl but you are mixing things that used to happen but has been changed with other things happening today

Yep. After "holding his breath" for a few years he could have retired to Weed, CA or Grass Valley (Ricky Williams territory) and smoked to his heart's content.

The funny thing is the nfl only tests one time per year for weed. All the players know the week it's scheduled so they just have to stop smoking for a couple weeks leading up to it and can do it all they want after. So he knew the test was coming and still failed.

This is shocking news. By all accounts he was a great kid at Alabama. Saban loved him. At one point he was living in a car with his father and siblings in some Oklahoma ghetto. Josh was only a three star who only  made the Alabama team when another player fell through at the last minute. I heard him in numerous interviews and always sensed that he was a great  kid. He was said to have worked as hard as any Alabama player. I believe this because he was never even actually their #1 RB. Seriously.

I don't, and will not excuse him from blame if he is guilty of any of those charges. The whole thing saddens me and I hope that the victim is OK and Josh can get himself together.

You never know what these guys are actually like. You only see what the team makes public and the carefully curated stories of their past.

Josh Gordon did tons of other drugs other than weed and has admitted to such. I'm not sure why this narrative still exists that anyone other than him is responsible for the downfall of his career.

Nobody said someone else was responsible for his woes.

Just pointing out Goodell 's justice system is flawed.

Maybe so but he's been in the public eye for a decade now and his only prior incident wound up as a speeding ticket because his blood alcohol level was found to be within the legal limit. That wasn't a team sponsored snow job.  I suspect many of us have been there. I'd wait to see the details before coming to any conclusions.

It depends players who are in the intervention program can get regularly tested at random

Players not in the program have a scheduled date so they can work around it

Yeah, it's completely arbitrary.

is the implication in your post that he shouldn’t be released? Based on?

meh. 2 things normally get you pretty well sorted-

several items are negotiated penalties and fine schedules with the NFLPA

they are punishing behavior detrimental to the league, not trying legal cases or pushing strict morality

performance enhancers and gambling being a bigger deal than assault (yet alone assault the public isn’t confident in) becomes pretty clear pretty quick when remembering those two qualifiers. He’s not a judge in a court of law or protecting society - he’s guarding j shield. We have other systems that have utterly failed holding guys accountable for their societal transgressions

1) integrity of the product

2) marketability of the product

3) morality
