BigAl2526 Posted May 10 Posted May 10 I'm not sure that New York's miserable 2025 season had much to do with coaching. I think the team Glenn inherited was rife with dysfunction. This season will give a better indication of whether or not Glenn can coach. Quote

I say owners because it's not just Woody Johnson, as it's also his son wandering through the locker room giving players crap about their performance. The man will have his choice of jobs at the end of this season, and even if none were available but the NY Jets, I'm pretty sure he wouldn't take that job. Five hot seat teams: Lions, Bengals, Bucs, Colts, Jets. Then you have Carolina, who won the division at 8-9 with Tampa and Atlanta, so there could be a change there. The 49ers finished 3rd in their division at 12-5 behind both Seattle and the Rams, 12-5. Who knows with 9-7 GB, the 7-9 Cowboys, and 5-12 Commanders? You think Dan Campbell's job is on the hot seat? Yeah, the NFL draft is set up to help the bad teams get better talent. The really sad thing for Jets' fans is that despite a ton of high picks, they haven't been able to turn it around. To continue to stink over that length of time, you have to blame the owner/organization first, then their GM choices, then their head coaches. Over the last 10 years the Jets have had: 15 first round picks 13 of those picks were in the top 16 8 picks in the top 10 6 top-6 picks 5 top-4 picks (2,2,3,3,4) Yet they have not been able to translate that into wins. Their drafts always look good, and they often get high grades because they are usually picking in the top 10 and many years they have had multiple first round picks. But then the organization somehow wastes or doesn't develop that talent. For comparison:: The Bills over the last 10 years have had: 8 first round picks 3 of those picks were in the top 16 2 picks in the top 10 0 top-4, top-5, or top-6 picks 1 1 Quote

The Lions were 9-8 last year and last in their division. They now have a taste of winning with somewhat new ownership, and they might look really hard at someone like McDermott to take them to a better spot. Who knows, they have a decent QB and RB with new coordinators, so if they falter this season, who knows? 21 minutes ago, nuklz2594 said: McDermott to tar heels? Nope, NFL or nothing IMHO Quote

As I said in the "Keep telling us..." topic, I believe McDermott will be a 2nd tier candidate. I think he'll get some courtesy interviews that will give him the opportunity to convince skeptical teams but I doubt he'll be at the top of any team's list. My reasons are in other topics. Regarding the Jests, yes it is absolutely, unequivocally an ownership issue. There are a lot of bad NFL owners but only Jimmy Haslam and Michael Bidwell rival Woody Johnson for epic incompetence. Woody Johnson has owned the team for 20 years with few winning seasons, and except for a couple of playoff seasons back in 2009 and 2010, the team has been a hot mess. I think that the emergence of Sam Darnold as a legitimate NFL starting QB after his total failure in New York is the cherry on top of the Johnson's manure pile in Met Life. Many fans forget how bad the Bills were in Ralph Wilson's last decade of ownership when he essentially gave control of the team to Russ Brandon. The Detroit Lions fans suffered for years with losing teams until Sheila Ford Hamp took over the team from her mother Martha Firestone Ford in 2020. I think that the Chicago Bears also got new ownership just a few years ago before they started getting their ducks in a row. The Bills suffered from bad ownership for decades. Ralph Wilson was great for the AFL and the NFL, but not a good franchise owner. I’m not going to rehash all the bad coaches and GMs. Bill Polian became GM by default. The hypothetical discussion of McDermott going to the Jets or Cardinals, is setting McDermott up for failure. He can’t change the culture with the current ownership of those franchises. 1 1 Quote

Spagnola's defense made Jalen hurts look like a god too in SB.. 120 rating... The game you're talking about Murray had 88 Every single coach has bad games under their belt... McDermott does have a lot more good than bad Even his raw statistics are tremendous and he was changing the culture before Josh Allen was here The bills were a joke as an organization and Sean McDermott is a huge part of fixing that.. he deserves credit for that Despite not taking us to a Super bowl he deserves credit for helping fix the Buffalo Bills organization and taking us from a laughing stock to respectable It was already happening before Josh and he was putting in hours no Bills coaches were doing before him for a decade.. he worked harder than our previous coaches and got better results Held people to a higher standard.. and was not okay with the status quo at one Bills drive That should be how he's remembered... The dude who changed the status quo at one Bills drive and was not okay with mediocrity.. he was not okay with the same old same old that plagued the bills and changed the culture I would bring all that up before I talk about him not winning a Lombardi.. only one team hoists that.. all of those other things that he did over a decade mean a lot to the organization Including bringing stability to win 5 AFC East titles he's not John Madden but some of this website treat him like he is a worthless bum .. he's a good coach with some flaws who never won a Super bowl Marv Levy had five Hall of famers and didn't win the big one... And Marv is beloved Sean should have been treated better at the end Edited May 10 by Buffalo716 1 Quote

That assumes they hit the QB next year. They’ll get a good young offensive minded HC to pair with him (Udinski or Webb maybe). They just have so many assets. Fingers crossed Zach Wilson has a younger brother then 😂 2 Quote

I don't see any better options in the NFL landscape at the end of this season. Perhaps if Green Bay or San Fran fire their HCs, and even then. I would think his first choice would be Carolina, as he lives there. I would think a proper community would be more important to him than the actual team or players, as I think he might prefer a small market town such as GB over SF. But yeah, my opinion stands as I think he could have made it work with either Sam Darnold or Baker Mayfield, too. The culture, the environment, as he changed things in Buffalo, very few men have been able to do. Let's not forget that he hand-picked Brandon Bean and has gone through many offensive assistant coaches until he found the very best. I can understand why there were no big-name hires for his DC, as he wanted to implement his type of scheme in Buffalo, and promoted from within after Leslie Frazier (who, btw, was a big name). When he gets another HCing job, I can see him hiring a big-name DC and OC. I also think the difference between McDermott and Schottheimer is that Martyball was overly conservative in his postseason approach. Both have been unlucky as hell in the playoffs. Whereas McD lets the bullets fly as he lets his OC do what's needed. I go back to that 2021 playoff game against the Patriots, 47-17, where the passing offense was wide open. Even in the next game against KC, 36-42. McD allows his OC to do what they will, and Marty demanded a more conservative style. You know, like the guy who said that three things can happen when you pass the ball, and two of them are bad. 1 Quote

They have weapons across the board with Wilson, Cooper, Mitchell, Sadiq, and Hall. It probably won't be until next year they get that guy with their three 1st Round picks. They also will have over $100M in cap space going into the 2027 offseason. The future is potentially bright for them if they hit on a QB in 2027 and get the OL straight. They clearly have the means at their disposal to do so. The question is whether their scouting staff and the GM will get it right. The Jets O-line is not bad which is shocking for a bad team to have better than average to good Oline play. They spent first round picks on tackles in 2024 and 2025 both ended up being thus far good. 2023 they hit on an interior pick with Joe Tippman at guard. Vera Tucker was good when he played too although he departed. They even found productive vet free agents in recent years like John Simpson, Morgan Moses, and Josh Meyers. The Jets issues aren’t that they have drafted all that poorly either. Their drafts have been fairly good since 2022. But their ownership situation is so insanely dysfunctional it results in poor coaches and the inability to find a QB. The Jets are probably gonna be a 5-7 win team this season and they will have a loaded haul of picks again in 2027’s draft but if they don’t get the right QB and they don’t get the coach right then it’s gonna be another failed rebuild Quote
