I agree with you, but at the same time I don't think McDermott is going to have as many options as some people think on here. If he couldn't even get to a super bowl with Josh Allen in his prime, I'm not so sure owners for contending, or even middling teams, are going to be lining up for his services 2 Quote
Sierra Foothills Posted May 7 Posted May 7 My collection of McDermott thoughts and predictions: He will coach in the NFL again. The last 10 years in the NFL shows that the average number of HCs fired each year is between 6-7. He will eventually get an offer and he won't be in a position to be picky. He will not be a prime candidate. He will have to settle for a less prestigious organization because... He is viewed more favorably in Buffalo than he is league-wide: His 2017 playoff season is overplayed. There was a planetary alignment in the Bills favor and in reality the team was only marginally improved from the years before. He's the HC who couldn't win an AFCCG or even the top seed in the conference despite having Josh Allen. Close examination of his specialty (defense) will show that his teams were mostly average to above average and that they had their greatest success when they had Leslie Frazier and a young core of defenders. McDermott's defenses generally got worse during his tenure. He will not seriously consider a HCing position in the NCAA. McDermott does not have the people skills to be an effective recruiter or retainer of talent, which is nearly the most important function of a college HC these days. Also he will detest the idea of players being able to leave after one year. Because he'll take a job with a second tier organization and won't have Josh Allen, his next team will tread water in the standings and he'll last anywhere from 2-4 years, based on ownership and fan patience. I predict that McDermott will not build a powerhouse program that perennially contends in his next HC opportunity. Other thoughts: His best hope for success would be landing in a top organization with an excellent GM and personnel department... but I don't see that happening because I don't believe he's viewed as a prime candidate and I don't think a top organization (i.e. - the Chiefs, the 49ers) would strongly consider him. I still can't believe McDermott got the Bills job because it's impossible for me to imagine him interviewing well... he simply doesn't speak well and I don't see him "winning the interview" again. I believe he impressed the Pegulas simply because he was stylistically the opposite of Rex Ryan. Based on his tepid success with coordinators and the quality of his coaching staffs in Buffalo I'm not confident that he could assemble a good coaching staff. JMO Quote
