Augie Posted April 30 Posted April 30 It obviously depends upon the landing spot and roster, but there’s no way I see him lasting only 3 years or less. For that reason, I went with things falling right for the guy for a change and he gets to a SB. Quote
Don Otreply Posted April 30 Posted April 30 He will last five or six years, then revert back to being a defensive coach of some kind, and or just fade away, Quote
mathja Posted April 30 Posted April 30 He’ll get hired by the New York Jets and he will take them to the playoffs, breaking their record, setting drought, but they’ll lose in the first round and miss the playoffs the next two seasons. 1 Quote

I call it The Scotty Bowman Effect. As a coach he Won 5 Stanley Cup NHL championships with Montreal, then coached the Sabres for seven seasons (never making the cup finals). After leaving Buffalo, he won 4 more Stanley Cup championships between two other teams. Buffalo is cursed. I can see McDermott winning it all, and In the mean time the Bills will cycle through multiple head coaches who 'can't get the job done'. Edited April 30 by SoMAn 1 Quote
QB Bills Posted April 30 Posted April 30 Man, this McDermott revisionist history really is something. People make it out to be like he took over some bottom feeding team and did a 180. Bills records and point differential the 3 years before he got hired: 2014: 9-7 (54) 2015: 8-8 (20) 2016: 7-9 (21) McDermott claps his way to OBD.. 2017: 9-7 (-57) The guy got lucky with an easy schedule and an unlikely Andy Dalton 4th down completion in a season he actually decided to start Nathan Peterman because he thought he gave them the best chance to win. They crapped the bed the following season (albeit mostly by design) and then Josh Allen started to become Josh Allen and the rest is history. Unless he gets lucky with a freak show qb again, he will never sniff the super bowl and will never coach a perennial playoff team again. Should have fired him years ago. 3 1 3 4 Quote
GerstAusGosheim Posted April 30 Posted April 30 This is assuming he gets another chance. Defensive head coaches are less desirable these days. Especially when his defense and decision making prevented the team from getting to the Super Bowl with an MVP level QB. If the Bills go 10-0 to start the season with a high flying O and vastly improved D, being a culture guy might not be enough. 2 Quote

I would go the former if it was 5 years or less and doesn't win a playoff game (coe playoff wins require a QB above all else) But I think there is almost no chance he is fired within 3 years. He is too good of a floor raiser. Whereas if he got a QB could he find his way to a Superbowl? Yea I think he could. He'd need some bounces he never got here but yea. "Bounces" is why we didn't win a Super Bowl here? I guess a few lucky bounces and I'd own Amazon or be playing for the Sabres. Edited April 30 by Puckman5 1 Quote

Nope. But he would need some to get to one. I don't think the Bills ever had a real lucky break go their way in the playoffs and that is what I think Sean might need. But they do happen to other teams. Backup QBs in conference championship games have happened at least 3 times that I can remember in the past decade for example. Quote

I think he needs to use this year to understand that he was part of the problem and the reasons why. Then maybe. I guess we'll see. 1 Quote
ClosetFan Posted April 30 Posted April 30 I was going to say that he will probably need another head coaching job just to pay his daughter's tuition, room, and board at Notre Dame. Oh wait . . . I think Notre Dame has free tuition for families earning under $150,000 per year. So that's why he is no longer coaching! This whole thing was just a scheme between McDermott, Bean, and Pegula to get free tuition since he no longer has an income. Quote

I think she might even be able to buy her own textbooks without financial assistance, but that might be cutting it tight the way textbook prices have gone. Quote

hondo in seattle Posted April 30 Posted April 30 I think McD is a good - not great - head coach. Lots of good head coaches get to the SB. A few bad ones have made it. Given his credentials, he'll have options and probably pick a decent gig. And I think this year off to reflect on his shortcomings, mistakes, and growth opportunities will be good for him. I expect him to do well in his next job. Quote
juno999 Posted April 30 Posted April 30 I’m curious to see what team(s) will be interested in hiring a defensive minded HC who is currently 52 and his defenses have largely looked terrible in his playoff losses. The HC trend is clearly hiring offensive minded coaches who are in their 30s. If he is willing, I could see him go to a team that has a host of issues like the Bills did when he was hired. Hard for me to see a team/organization which is squared away, having much interest in hiring McD. Quote

mannc Posted April 30 Posted April 30 I don’t think it’s a given that McDermott will coach again. I don’t think he’s viewed as highly around the league as some people here think. Some guys who take a year off never come back. 4 1 Quote
