Actually a truck, but that don't matter.

I'm not an easy negotiation, and I'm pretty good at working with dealership folks - they're actually pretty nice if you find a way to bust through the initial bull#### and work on finding common ground.  I mean that- they're just mostly insecurely navigating the job or career they took... they've got kids, morals and other nice qualities.

They're also out to make the best commission they can, so, well... shark's are in the water...

What I learned though, from every single one of the four dealerships I dealt with, is that they all anticipate a HUGE amount of repossessions starting in October.

Take that for what you will, but I don't see a bunch of 'winning' when the sharks can tell me when the blood pool is coming.

They literally pegged October to December of this year that cars are going to get repossessed.  It was oddly gleeful at times as they told me about how they'll bid on cars from the banks.

what is going to follow that is homes.  Not houses, homes.

It's the way it works.

That's a lot of people buying vehicles on credit.

If you want to start making some real gains financially you don't do that.

Used cars will run decades if you take care of them. Get a good mechanic.

Did they mention any specific indicators that were showing a likely uptick in loan defaults?

Just curious what was leading them to believe October would mark a significant rise.

You’ve got a lot shoe-horned in here.   A little self-aggrandizing, a little psychology, some observations on how dealership people are really just people, and some market predictions a few months out.

Why October specifically?

True, a vehicle can last a long time if maintained properly. I leased a sub-compact SUV late last year. Financially at that point in time it was a better arrangement for me rather than buying. I bought my previous vehicle in 2008 and its still sitting in the garage as a back-up vehicle that I drive on occasion. It still runs pretty well but with the mileage approaching 200K I'm not comfortable using it for any long trips at this point. A rough calculation from keeping it 17 years saved me about $70K in car payments assuming a new vehicle every 5 years.

The big difference other than not hauling around a lot of extra weight and much better gas mileage is the electronics. After a lifetime of driving without it I find some of it annoying and intrusive. I do like the blind spot sensors, key-less and remote functionality like auto-start and diagnostics, and the satellite radio.

i am fully aware that people over spend, but i'm not sure if you've realized the rising cost of absolutely everything?  maybe people that weren't overspending and still living paycheck to paycheck are now against the ropes more than ever.  let's ignore that completely.

So things are expensive......two choices make more or consume less.

How hard is this?

The rest of your post is nonsense, as usual.

do you not understand that some people are living tight not because of overspending, but because of family concerns, kids, salaries, etc...they're tight and can't cut corners anymore.  prices go up, people are screwed.  do you have the ability to understand that or no?

I just bought a 2026 Lexus RX450. Didn’t look like doom and gloom at the dealership. I’m not sure about repossessions, I paid cash. No bank , no loans, put my offer on the table, which was a fair offer. Definitely not paying the high price they were asking. They accepted my offer after a little pushback but they knew I wasn’t going to budge.
Stop living above your means. Buy the car you can afford. Really not that difficult. 🤷‍♂️

oh it has to be more than that. The average American is completely financially illiterate.

edit to add:

I have to agree with my friends on the right side of the aisle here. Don’t buy what you can’t afford, live within your means, and yes prices are going up on every day goods, but that is not new and if increased gas and groceries is your breaking point, you were living on a razors edge to begin with.

One thing that drives me crazy is people blaming others for their financial lot in life. Work harder, or better yourself and find a better job, get more certifications or a better degree, just do what it takes. And don’t just live within your means; live in a way that allows you to not only survive, but be comfortable for a bit, when ***** hits the fan.
