BuffaloBillyG Posted April 30 Posted April 30 Yeah we all knew about "Saint Doug". Goodwin used to cheese me off too though. Had he committed to football instead of training for track, he could have been really special. Quote

Goodwin, Aaron Williams... edit: Looked it up. The only Texas players on the Bills those years was Goodwin and Aaron Williams. So he was definitely talking about you Marquise! Isn't coke kind of a short-term PED? Sounds like a guy who do whatever it takes to give his team the best chance to win. Quote

I do believe Marrone was a better HC than he gets credit for around here. His 3 biggest problems were: 1. Coached under possibly the WORST leadership and structure in Bills franchise history. Ralph was too old to know what year it was, he refused to spend money, and then put Russ Brandon in charge. 2. No QB, and the QB the GM did draft, Marrone didnt want. 3. Marrone himself was a huge, arrogant ahole. I think #3 couldve been forgiven or even looked over if he had been winning. And if he had a real QB and won he couldve been looked at as the next Bill Parcels. If we had Josh Allen back then, that 2014 team absolutely goes to the SB and likely wins it. The only thing that couldve held us back wouldve been Hackett as OC. That said, we didnt, he wasnt, and he's just an insufferable prick. I didn’t think for how sour his personality was Doug did all right the 2 years he was here. That being said definitely not a given Josh would have worked well with Doug. Quote

The blood of Christ, etc.. name another church that doesn’t card you and gives you free wine. I’m probably going to hell for that comment as a card carrying catholic. 2 Quote

That being said definitely not a given Josh would have worked well with Doug. How much of any success (a 9-7 season) was down to Marrone and how much of it was Schwartz? In 2014 when the team went 9-7 and almost made the playoffs, the offensive rankings were 26th in yards and 18th in points (Marrone was an offensive coach). While Schwartz's defense ranked #4 in yards allowed, #4 in points allowed, and #3 in takeaways. Hard for me to give Marrone too much credit for that season other than that he hired Schwartz. The Bills went 6-10 under Marrone the year before Schartz's arrival. And all the complaining about McDermott and/or Beane seems a bit silly when you remember what came before them: Gregg Williams, Mike Mularkey, Dick Jauron, Chan Gailey (I did like Chan though), Doug Marrone, Rex Ryan...and Tom Donahoe, Russ Brandon, Buddy Nix, and Doug Whaley. It's not just that they were bad, but like 6 out of 10 of those guys were just total ego-driven pricks as well. 1 Quote

That's why i want to imagine Josh on the Offense. It wouldnt matter who is coaching that team! Funny enough, it's kinda the mirror image of McD's situation. Marrone was the Offensive mind, but had garbage for QBs. And his Defense had all the talent and carried that team. McD is the Defensive mind, and had a GOAT at QB, but his defenses fell apart in the end. 1 Quote

In terms of personality, I don't know if he was worse than say, Mike Vrabel. Maybe not as much of a sense of humor. Ownership and GM situation was a disaster. Schwarz definitely helped, and Orton did do well all things considered, coming out of retirement if I remember correctly. Marrone did well with what he had. Decided to bounce when he saw it wasn't going anywhere. I'm a believer you need to go down with the ship if you're a head coach, GM, or owner. Everybody else can jump, but not them. Quote

He coached at Alabama for one season as the offensive line coach. Of course I have absolutely no way to verify this but from what I heard, Saban was not at all pleased with him. My dad worked directly with his wife in an accouting department, during Marrone's time at SU & during his Buffalo days. Met her a few times as a kid, super sweet and my dad spoke highly of her too. Doug came in for her lunch breaks during the offseason, and my dad said he'd wave say hi and let him be a regular human. First time he saw Doug after the Bills hiring, my dad waved and said "Congrats Coach" (his desk had a bunch of Bills stuff on it) and he rolled his eyes and said real sarcastically "yeah... buffalo... my dream job" LOL My dad's came home and said "THAT GUYS A F**** #######" and told me that story LOL one of like 3xs ive ever heard an f-bomb from my old man 🤣🤣🤣 Dude coached a mildly successful small time Syracuse and acted like Vince Lombardi lol 1 2 1 Quote
Snappysnackcakes Posted April 30 Posted April 30 I just gained a lot of respect for Marquise Goodwin. Marrone IS a (use your favorite derogatory term). Quote

Buffalo Ballin Posted April 30 Posted April 30 Doug Marrone is god awful HC. Yikes, what a disaster catastrophic pick by us. Put a cap on a bag full of piss for a HC and we would have gotten the same results. For free. Quote
