So read an article today that the Vancouver Canucks asked the Sabre's for permission to interview Kevyn Adams for their GM opening (I know many would ask why would they want him) but am surprised that a team would need permission to talk with a person who was fired.

I know in the NFL certainly if you resign or mutually agree to part ways, like if a team wanted to speak to Mike Tomlin, they'd need permission, but if a team wanted to talk to McD even though he is still getting paid, do they need the Bills permission?   Rumor is the Giants will fire Joe Schoen after the draft, will teams need to get Giants permission to talk to him?

Does the NFL simply have different rules than the NHL around this??  Never heard of teams asking permission in the NFL to talk with fired coaches or GM's.

So this is my take... like Tomlin, he is still under contract thus if you wanted to talk to him you would need permission or it would be tampering... So, for Adams, was fired but still has guaranteed on his contract and is getting paid... So I think the concept is we would give permission we clearly would, cause if he got hired his contract would void and we wouldnt have to pay it...  In Tomlins case I seem to remember the Steelers feeling there was a market for him and would be looking for compensation.

Agree, Yeah maybe the NFL is the same, but have never heard of teams asking permission to talk with fired coaches.  Certainly is different when coaches step down or mutual parting of the ways.

Just seemed strange seeing an article about Adams getting permission

It does seem a smidge out of what I am used too... and I do not know the inside legalities...  I feel like there is a difference between someone who is under contract and being paid and some one whose contract has run out, as well as someone whose contract was not guaranteed and got fired.. like honestly there is no way I could see an employer being able to control a former employee who is not being paid. I do see that if you are still under contract and being paid BUT no longer allowed to work in the position you were fired from...   where there could be a difference.

It’s not a matter of rules, but of contract language. If a team is still paying out a contract, then it makes sense that they’d retains some rights. Often there is salary offset language for executives. So a team might have conditions if another team were to hire one of their execs who has been relieved of their duties, but is still under contract. One of those would be a minimum salary so that they’d be off the hook for that money. Another might have to do with conditions for hiring people from the former team.

The nhl does a lot of weird things. Why do you need permission to interview a fired GM? Why does their playoff system work so weirdly? Why are their seedings so different? Why do they have a point system for games that go into OT? That's like the NFL giving half a win to teams that go into OT games. Why are they the only major sport of the 4 that passes around their championship trophy from team to team? If you win 4 championships, you should have 4 trophies in your trophy case. Not given to the next team. But the game was invented in Canada so that might explain things.

Kinda like when Wrex was almost working for free for ESPN while still collecting a check from TPegs. Although, to be fair, ESPN was kinda paying him what he was worth. 🤷‍♂️

He does seem to be as bad on TV as he was here as HC.

Fortunately, the rare times I've seen him on ESPN, I get sidetracked by the studio lighting reflecting off of his giant "There's Something About Mary" veneers so the distraction dilutes the impact of the idiocy that spews forth.

You're really trying to get the Canadians mad at you! :)

It may be the same in all sports, but have never heard of needing permission to talk to a fired coach or GM in the NFL

Trophies that are won once a year and then returned to the sports hall of fame the following season until the next winner is crowned are pretty damn cool in my eyes. You can have your photos and banners, but the real win is having your name engraved on Lord Stanley’s Cup.

edit: Also, ***** you for disparaging Canada. 😘
