When 8 of your last 12 day 1 and 2 draft picks are on defense, that is what usually happens.

That's largely because we don't have that stud pass rusher on a second contract or any other really elite level guys on that side of the ball.

It is absolutely mind blowing, however, how little the Eagles have spent on defense and how good they are.

Bills 30

Denver 33

The results of the cheap D are self evident.

I mean it was basically 24 in regulation. 6 points were gifts from our offense.

This is the answer.

Hopefully a few of those guys develop beyond quality role players into impact players. So far, I’d say only Benford has reached that status (and Oliver when healthy). Bishop and Walker feel like guys that could take that step (if Walker fits in this defense).

If you hit on your draft picks: Allen, Cook, the oline, the second contracts are obviously more expensive than a rookie contract. If you're paying a true franchise qb, that will take a lot of your cap. The alternative is a bad team.

If you don't hit on your draft picks, you end up paying a premium for free agents. The Bills WR room was expensive and subpar at the same time.

We do not consistently hit on the many draft picks devoted to the defense. We have a lot of rookie contracts on D and mid level free agents that are injured or do not show up in the post-season.

Anyone who concludes that the defense is getting short shrift is not paying attention. Most of the draft picks and free agents go to that side of the ball.

McD etc.. had a draft process, it was successful for so many reasons. Bills fans want to win with class & productive players.

It was time however to roll with a different coach. I'm not sure if Brady is the guy, but it   wasn't going to happen with McD.

I can't believe Pagula had the stones to do it considering how long he stuck with Adams as Sabre's GM who produced no playoff appearances or hype for that matter.

New stadium, new hopes!

Let's Go Bills!

We need a new defensive scheme more than we need to throw more money at the defense.

The Bills should be an aggressive defense that takes risks to get the ball back in Josh's hands as soon as possible.  If they give up a quick score, they have JA17 who can respond.  The bend but don't break defensive philosophy enables those long 10 - 12 play drives down the field, burning clock and shortening the game.  Most importantly, it keeps Josh out of the game.

When you have the best offensive player in the league you need to maximize the time he has the ball in his hands.   Josh Allen is the advantage the Bills have over every team they play.   You neuter that advantage when he is sitting on the bench staring at an iPad.

Yes. Drafting well does wonders.

Don't forget having 2 top 10 picks along with another top 15 pick (3 outta the last 5 years) plays a major role in how you get to construct a roster and add dominant players

The Eagles GM is much more aggressive than ours. The Josh Allen pick was a masterclass in GM work. I’d love to see Beane go back to that strategy. Find the guy you KNOW is going to be a super star and you do whatever it takes to acquire them.

Well, it's true. But it's more than that. They do an excellent job knowing when to let vets walk. It does help that they somehow keep the pipeline full of you g cheap defensive players through the draft. They often take small risks on talented players that slide a bit due to injury if character concerns, and always take the gamble on the right guy. It's impressive.

Agreed.  I was hoping we'd see more of this last year.  It seems there were times when the Bills got behind and were forced to play this way, it worked.  It seemed like once Hairston went down, they felt like they didn't have the horses to play tight in the secondary (which is necessary with this kind of approach).  However, when they were forced to play that way, even with guys like Ingram, I thought it was largely successful.  Our line was often aggressive...but when the QB had a wide open bail out open, their pressure rate was useless.

The change in the D scheme will set the Bills back this year.  Players will learn their new scheme.  Some will fit, some will not.  Bills fans are well versed in the pitfalls of a change from the years we changed coaches and schemes every three years.  I remember some good 3x4 lbs who were let go when the Bills again rotated to the 4x3.  where are you Gabe Northern?  Oh, gone a decade or two...never mind.
