I'll get flamed for this, but I don't think it is nearly as bad as everyone makes it out to be, nor any worse than it has been for the last couple of decades, at least.

I think you are incorrect.

Those weeks with the replacement refs were extraordinarily bad.  There were bad calls, but also extended delays.  The cadence of games was being thrown off, and by the 2nd or 3rd week the fabric of the sport was being torn and games were deteriorating into fights and other unnecessary drama.  It made me really appreciate how good NFL referees really are, despite the constant criticism and being taken for granted.

I have been working scorers table at D3 college basketball games off and on since the 1970's including this past season.  In the past five years, the quality of officials i am seeing has become very uneven.  I see some excellent officials and some that shouldn't be anywhere near a college game.  I have worked D3 games with officials who went on to ref D-I final four and championship games.  I can only imagine how uneven the quality of NFL random crews drawn from D-I, D-2, & D-3 will be.  Bad enough in the playoffs where they break up the crews that have worked together all season for "all-star" crews.

Where is the “make them full time employees then they will see 500 things correctly at the same time” crowd

With gambling a thing in the NFL, it behooves the league to make the refs full-time, and pay them REALLY well!

Talk that replacement refs couldn’t be any worse is silly. Hopefully this gets worked out.

Agree.  This is just sabre rattling by the NFL...the regular refs will be back before the preseason.

I've always thought that the refs in the college level seemed to be more thorough and really didn't leave much up to chance in their officiating.........if plays were questionable, they stopped the game and reviewed.

Simple as that

How easy the NFL could fix the ref issue, and their refusal to do so, is all you need to know.

What could the NFL do? I’ve been hearing since the 90’s how terrible officials are. I think fans have to face the reality that officiating is never going to be at a point where fans think it is great no matter how good it is.

And I’m not gonna say there aren’t things that can’t be tweaked but there’s never going to be a point where fans say the officials are good

They always get paid well relatively speaking. 200-300k to work half the year is pretty good. I think I the larger issue is that unlike MLB/NBA/NHL refs these guys aren’t full time.

The refs in the NBA spend the offseason watching film and talking with the rules committees and working on their flaws. NFL refs don’t have that as much in the offseason. They pretty much maybe do an end of season close out workshop and a few weeks refresher course before the season starts.

I think making them full time and ranging up the salary to 400k-600k and making sure that they continue to work on their craft in the offseason is bigger than just paying them mire

I mean I have no idea what these guys make... I wonder what the difference will be between them if it gets to that... like will we not notice a difference or will we be begging to have the officials we usually hate, complain about and insinuate they are cheating back...  LOL...  and if they come back... what will we do... 🤣

And this is why you aren't going to see any of the NCAA officials with potential NFL careers make this move.  You'll instead see recent NCAA retirees, UFL officials, and maybe some older CFL guys.

The quality is going to be much worse than the average NFL on-field official.  I agree that Shawn Hochuli and co are terrible but these guys will be way out of their league in the NFL.  You're gonna get a fair amount of administrative errors alongside phantom subjective calls for things like holding and pass interference.

Nothing but luv, but we are currently getting all those things, the league and the current refs can’t decide what constitutes a catch…,

Do you need me to show how bad it can be just  with Shawn Hochuli? Truly he is astonishingly bad. Too many NFL officials are simply inconsistent in regards to so many calls that your defense of them is silly. I understand the other refs "could be worse" but that is unlikely

That would change nothing

I remember when the replacement refs were in there. The game certainly didn’t feel slanted towards either team. Both squads were the beneficiaries of bad calls and I liked that. When the real refs came back everyone was happy, thinking some sort of order had been restored, but then they proceeded to make bad calls, too. I think the regular refs are better, of course, but I don’t think the replacements are a dumpster fire in comparison. NFL refs in general are pretty poor, replacements or not.

Cant get any worse than the current refs. Id be for replacements and hopefully they hold them accountable. Mess up and you are gone permanently. 3 strike rule.

Jig is up. It's over. The legit NFL refs were figured out. Get rid of all of them. Screw em.

They're holding out for a bigger percentage of the take on rigged calls they're making.
