Orlando Buffalo Posted March 30 Posted March 30 I am very ok with replacement officials if it causes the NFL to fix the easy fixes and make the refs accountable for how bad they are currently. I will also point out that the fail mary is completely overblown because it was A) a close call B) there are dozens of worse calls each year by the current officials. 2 1 2 Quote

There are some good college refs out there. Quote

Most of the guys will stick to their NCAA assignments. Most of the replacement officials will come from the junior college and HS official ranks. There are plenty of really good officials at those ranks as well but let's not pretend like the NFL is going to be getting the best college level officials. Also, from my experience (I'm a HS football official), a large number of the junior college football officials are also HS football officials. They work Friday nights and then Saturday afternoons the next day. Edited March 30 by Sammy Watkins' Rib Quote

NFL will train em and even better.. watch our refs more closely.. do to not having a choice. 1 Quote

Don Otreply Posted March 30 Posted March 30 Certainly won’t be any more erratic in quality of penalty’s called…, will they teach them what qualifies as a catch? asking for a friend…, 2 Quote
Bray Wyatt Posted March 30 Posted March 30 I actually met one of the refs from the fail mary. He was selling hot tubs down here in TN, gave me a copy of his book he wrote lol 1 Quote
MJS Posted March 30 Posted March 30 I'll get flamed for this, but I don't think it is nearly as bad as everyone makes it out to be, nor any worse than it has been for the last couple of decades, at least. 1 Quote

Clearly one of the worst calls ever made 1 Quote
Buffalo Ballin Posted March 30 Posted March 30 Jig is up. It's over. The legit NFL refs were figured out. Get rid of all of them. Screw em. 1 Quote
Victory Formation Posted March 30 Posted March 30 Too often do refs change the outcome of the game.. Pass interference calls at the most inopportune times in particular.... 1 2 1 Quote

And this is why you aren't going to see any of the NCAA officials with potential NFL careers make this move. You'll instead see recent NCAA retirees, UFL officials, and maybe some older CFL guys. The quality is going to be much worse than the average NFL on-field official. I agree that Shawn Hochuli and co are terrible but these guys will be way out of their league in the NFL. You're gonna get a fair amount of administrative errors alongside phantom subjective calls for things like holding and pass interference. 1 Quote
BringMetheHeadofLeonLett Posted March 30 Posted March 30 Please God, make it permanent this time! If I have to watch another Hochuli officiated game- I don't care how 'respected' that clan is... 3 Quote

They were terrible every time they had to be called on over the years. This time won't be any different. We think the current refs are bad, but they take it to a whole new level. 2 Quote
machine gun kelly Posted March 30 Posted March 30 This happened several years ago, and it was a disaster. I have a good friend who played for the Bucs during the Sapp years, and is still an SEC ref. He would probably jump on the NFL, but has a main job in medical device sales for the last 25 years. My guess is his reticence would be that he takes on NFL responsibilities, but once the ref negotiations are over he’s out of luck. Knowing him, that’s why he wouldn’t take it. Quote

Bill from NYC Posted March 30 Posted March 30 The owners have a league in which some players make more than 50 million per season, yet they consistently quibble over what would seem to be pennies that they pay the refs. Gee, I wonder why they want to keep the refs underpaid and more dependant? 🤔 1 1 Quote
