Nihilarian Posted March 28 Posted March 28 (edited) Let me ask a question. What happened in 2024 when McDermott gave Bobby Babich the playcalling duties for the defense? There was some fear that if he wasn't promoted, he would get another DC job elsewhere. The man had been a defensive assistant under McD since 2017 and knew the Buffalo defense inside and out; he knew the players, he knew the scheme. He had been a defensive assistant for twenty years. So what happened? McDermott ended up talking over the playcalling in the second half of some games because the defense wasn't playing all that well. McDermott was noted to be an excellent DC, which is what got him the head coaching job in Buffalo. The Buffalo defense finished the season decently, regardless of all the injuries to so many players throughout the season. My point: Jim Leonhard has been an NFL assistant coach for only two seasons in Denver under Vance Joseph. Defensive passing game coordinator, DB coach, and for 2025 assistant HC. While Leonhard might come in highly regarded, nobody knows if he is worth a damn calling the defensive plays in the NFL. We don't actually know if he will be any good at his brand new job as the Buffalo Bills' DC. Bobby Babich sure as hell wasn't, and he had a lot more NFL experience. It seems like 95% of this board thinks that it will be a seamless transition from a 4-3 bend but don't break defense to a much more aggressive style 3-4 scheme. I can tell you right now, he doesn't have the proper players to fit that scheme on the current roster. That's a FACT! As others have mentioned, one defensive end isn't going to correct all the problems with the current defense, no matter how good. Hey, perhaps a miracle happens, and he fields a top-five defense with Damar Hamlin in 2026...or perhaps not. Instead of putting all the eggs in one basket i'd rather see the Bills draft more defensive players in round 1, round 3, and round 4 to give the young man all the help he can get. Not a WR, not a DE that will cost an arm, leg, the kingdom, and the farm. JMHO. Edited March 28 by Nihilarian 1 4 Quote

He ran one of the nation’s best defenses for a handful of years. Babich had never created a game plan or called a game. Leonhard even served as interim HC (and should have been hired permanently). He’s WAY further along than where Babich was when he was hired as DC. 3 Quote

Nearly everyone recognizes there will be some awkward fits. The majority hope is that there is enough to work with. A few of the more sophisticated Xs and Os fellas did seem to think we were not in as dire a situation as you imply. It will take a few years to get a better fit, regardless. I doubt Leonhard will be as incompetent as Babich. He has experience as a DC at the college level. What is a common view, though again, I doubt it is 95%, is the sense that a shift to a more aggressive approach is welcome and can hardly do worse in the playoffs. 2 Quote
Pecker Posted March 28 Posted March 28 Here are all of our first round pics since we drafted JA : Tremaine edmonds Ed Oliver (No pick - Traded for Diggs) Greg Rousseau K elam Kinkaid Coleman (he still counts) Hairston. i would literally trade all of those players for Garrett, wouldn’t even hesitate. Considering the best player on that list is Diggs- who we traded for- only cements that we should do it. 2 1 Quote
NORWOODS FOOT Posted March 28 Posted March 28 (edited) 12 hours ago, Shaw66 said: I don't see that anyone has begun a discussion here on this subject, and I'm curious about the possibility, so here goes. Buffalo Rumblings ran an article yesterday by Matt Warren saying that the Browns have restructured Garrett's contract in a way that dramatically reduces his cap hit for the next year or two. The cap saving doesn't really help the Browns in their latest effort to resurrect the team, and it seems that the principal benefit of the restructure is to make a trade for Garrett much more likely. A trade might net the Browns three first-round picks (Ravens were willing to give two for Maxx, who was bringing a big cap hit with him), and apparently the Browns have asked the NFL to raise the current league limit on such trades from three years of picks to five! Point being that it seems the Bills could find the cap room to acquire Garrett, if they were willing to trade maybe three first round picks, or maybe two picks plus Rousseau, or something along those lines. I don't like mortgaging the future, but Myles Garrett is an extraordinary talent. He could be Josh Allen's Chris Jones. Any buyers at The Stadium Wall? Here’s the question: would you trade Kincaid, Coleman, and Hairston for Garrett? I would. Beane isn’t great at picking players with his first pick. Far from mortgaging the future, we might actually be saving it. Yeah, I’d hope to do it for 2 firsts and something else, but go as high as 3 firsts as long as he is under contract for the next 4-5 years. Plus, Garrett is very likely to break Bruce’s sack record — would be cool to do that in Buffalo. Edited March 28 by NORWOODS FOOT 1 Quote

Not a WR, not a DE that will cost an arm, leg, the kingdom, and the farm. JMHO. In your summation of Leonhard you strangely failed to mention his numerous relevant career accomplishments: Jim Leonhard was a walk-on at a Big 10 school, Wisconsin... a 5'8" defensive back (a bit shorter than McDermott). Even after he was twice named All-Big 10, Wisconsin still didn't put him on scholarship until his senior year. At the time of his graduation from Wisconsin he held the school record for career interceptions (21) and the Big 10 record for most career punt return yards (1347). His illustrious college career provided him with the honor of going undrafted and signing a free agent contract with the Buffalo Bills. Leonhard proceeded to play 10 seasons in the NFL, playing in 142 games and starting in 73. FWIW, neither McDermott or Babich ever made it to an NFL camp. In his first coaching stint, at his alma mater two years after retiring from the NFL, Leonhard worked with Wisconsin DC Dave Aranda of whom Sean McDermott said, "When he talks, I listen." In 2017 Leonhard was promoted to Wisconsin DC. At the end of that 2017 season, Leonhard was named one of five finalists for the Broyles Award which recognizes the top assistant coach in college football. In the 6 years that Leonhard was Wisconsin DC, the Badgers defense led the nation in yards allowed per game (288), first downs allowed per game (15.4), and 3rd down conversion rate (30.8). They were ranked in the top 10 of all schools 5 out of those 6 years. The 2019 team set a school record for sacks (51) and had 4 shutouts, most by a Big 10 team since 1962. The 2021 team allowed only 64.8 yards rushing per game, first in the nation and a school record. So you missed a few things that in a fair and honest discussion, need to be mentioned and when you say "We don't actually know if he will be any good at his brand new job as the Buffalo Bills' DC. Bobby Babich sure as hell wasn't, and he had a lot more NFL experience." your argument rings a bit hollow. Edited March 28 by Sierra Foothills 3 3 Quote

But we're talking about easily the best Edge Rusher in Football who's still in his prime. Coming off a Defensive Player of the Year campaign where he set the Single Season Sack Record. That ain't gonna cut it. The cost will *start* at 3 1sts. 12 hours ago, Dr. Who said: You definitely want to do that deal including the 2026 draft which is weak. Yes, but the things that they did to his contract made a Trade easier for them Post 6/1. Trading him before then will cost them approximately 17.5m in Cap. Post 6/1 they'll save over 8m. Combine that with what you said about this year's Draft being considered a weaker class and them pretty much being able to call the shots bc they're selling a product like Myles Garrett and I don't think they'll be looking to move him before 6/1 and settle for a Pick this year when they don't have to. Unlike last season he appears to be available for trade this offseason - probably after 6/1. Three end of round firsts for Myles Garrett would be a steal for the Bills. He’d probably require the Bills to play a four man front, but that would be a small price to pay. And where the Bills would be expected to draft it would likely take more than that. The Bills would also have to shed some cash spend to acquire him. That might be trickier at this point in the offseason. If he were 25, yes. 27, even, maybe. But when he will turn 31 during the season? For three 1sts? Nah. I might at least consider it at two 1sts. But imagine he's terrific for three months and then in December he tears an Achilles, or some ligaments? And we're facing years without a first. Nope. Anyway, the Browns say they're "adamant" about not trading him even after the adjustment to his contract. Edited March 28 by Thurman#1 Quote

If you think being an assistant coach in the NFL is more demanding than being an assistant in college, you don’t follow college. It’s a much more demanding schedule. Leonhard had 6 or 7 years as a successful coordinator. I’d argue that it’s much harder to do that in college than the pros depending on your situation. When Leonhard was at Wisconsin, his talent was average. He still had to scheme to stop OSU with far superior talent. There was no salary cap leveling the talent gap. Sometimes you had more talent and sometimes you had less at Wisconsin. His defenses were good regardless. Let’s not sell him short. He comes in with a FAR superior resume to Babich at the same point. No one thinks this turns around overnight. No one is also foolish enough to think that, in the last game of the year, his defense will perform worse than the worst in history. The bar is so low. They gave up the least pts in the league in 1994. With Miami he went 9-7 before their GM passed on Drew Brees the following season and stuck him with Daunte Culpepper and a cast of misfit toys. He has openly said when they passed on Brees he knew he was going to leave after that season. Bills fans should be grateful he didn’t get his way in Miami. Also, Saban hated being in the NFL. No one knows if Brady and Leonhard will be successful, however, unlike with McDermott who insulated himself with entry level subordinates coaches, there is a ton of experience on this staff on both sides of the ball with Carmichael, Fox, as well as a number of other well tenured coaches. Regardless, adding a player like Garrett, even at the price that’s quoted, is not likely to make a staff less successful. Even at 30, this is not a run of the mill addition. This is the type of player that will be talked about as one of the all time greats when he leaves the game, and he’s the type of player that a team with a realistic goal of winning the SB should want to add AND should want to prevent their competition for that crown from adding. 1 Quote
Nihilarian Posted March 28 Posted March 28 Dude, I'm not pouting. What I'm doing is pointing out that while so many Bills fans seem to think that this will be a smooth and seamless transition from an established excellent NFL HC to an unknown, maybe guy in both the HC and DC, being rookie coaches. Nobody knows what will happen over the 2026 NFL season in Buffalo. Someone mentioned that it isn't 95% of Bills fans thinking things will be fine this season, as we need to add another WR, even after the GM traded a #2 draft pick for one. It's a freaking 100-page thread on that subject, and it's moronic in my view, considering that this new DC doesn't have enough decent players to field the defense he needs/wants. That is my entire point. As others and I have pointed out, with the Buffalo Bills' luck over the last several seasons, the very same thing that happened with Von Miller could easily happen to any expensive player brought in to the team. Micah Parsons ring a bell? This team needs some help with CBs, linebackers, and NTs in the draft. I know it's more fun to dream and drool over a Justin Jefferson trade to Buffalo, too. It's simply not realistic. Lastly, as history has shown us, one season doesn't make a HoF career. Let's go back to this discussion in five years to see where all these new NFL Head coaches end up. Out of the ten new this year, who will make it five years? Quote
