I can understand wanting some insurance, I think Mahomes is back by week 4.  I could see Reid being able to squeeze a solid 4 weeks out of an elusive athlete like Fields.  I'm not talking 4 - 0... but if the goal is to tread water, you might be able to gameplan enough with him to go 2-2 or 3-1, if everyone else performs well 🤷‍♂️. They'll have Walker to carry some load, and might add Sadiq.  Fields + Sadiq could be fun for a few weeks before you roll out your real offense.

 

Plus, Reid will have a full off-season to draw up a one month gameplan for this kid.  Expensive insurance, but its adequate 

I just don’t see any redeemable qualities in him. He has failed with 3 organizations now, helped the bears and jets get a top pick and was benched multiple times. He’s just sooooo bad.

Thats not the scenario we pay a backup QB for though; achilles, ACL, etc etc. For sure season is toastttttt.

 

We pay backup QB as an insurance policy for a 2-4 week, in season, Josh injury.... as unlikely as it is to happen - thats what the policy is there to cover for a team like us. Tread water so Josh doesn't have to dig us out of the basement, and we're able to hold a decent seeding

Crazy story on that game, that I’ve always wanted to share. So this is a few people removed but you’ll get the point.

 

I spent a bunch of years working in the NBA. In that time, I made a lot of connections. A friend of mine was the stepson of the former Atlanta Hawks President. We were at dinner one time, years ago (must be like 16 or 17 at this point). That stepdad had a bunch of drinks and started telling us about it.
 

Apparently the refs are/were mic’ed up and huddled before the start of the 4th quarter. They said something to the tune of that “they needed to do what they could to ensure the Lakers win.” The Lakers proceeded to shoot 27 free throws in the 4th quarter. That video, with audio, has been held by Turner Sports for years. Basically Turner held it as blackmail against the league to continue on with their rights deal for a long time. I do not know how it has all unfolded since because this is now like 16 years ago but it exists (or at least did).

Check my posts about Kyle Allen the first time he was our backup when McDermott was here. I hated him then too. He is terrible.

 Fields trail of destruction....cost Bears 1st rounder; Coach Mike Nagy and GM Ryan Pace gets fired several yrs later; Steelers give up a 6th rounder for Fields; sat him down for mist of season bc they didn't want pick escalating to 4th;  Jets pay 40M to Fields the free agent; cost them a 4th rd comp pick due to 40M signing; Chiefs trade a 6th to him......and Justin continues to make his millions sitting on the bench after coaches find out he SUCKS!

There were a large number of people posting on the Gang Green forum last year that Fields was the ultimate statistic padder.  Would willingly take a sack if the throw didn't have a good chance of succeeding, but once the game was out of reach for the Jets, he would start to throw.

I remember watching Fields throw 6 TDs against Trevor Lawrence's Clemson team in the Sugar Bowl.   Why he became afraid to throw the ball is puzzling; it's got be a mental thing.  With those millions, he can hire a psychiatrist, or better yet, a hypnotist who will hypnotize him back to that Sugar Bowl game.

Mahomes is definitely missing the first 4 games.  
 

His return will be much hyped….with the networks looking to score huge ratings.  
 

Hopefully they’re 0-4 by then.  
 

 

So their first 4 games will probably feature the Raiders and Dolphins.

Maybe I'm looking into this too much, but I feel like if it's important enough to give up a draft pick for him, seems to me that the Chiefs are banking on Mahomes missing some time.  Like others, I think he starts the season on PUP and misses the first 4 games.  

Although not a runner, Mahomes puts a ton of stress on his knees, with all the running around and cutting that he does.

It’s a picks swapped, 6th for a 7th, in the 2027 draft. Essentially not really important. Jets are paying 7M of Fields’ 10M guaranteed so KC is getting a cheap backup. It’s a good deal for KC if Mahomes is able to come back healthy.

Was the trade changed to pick swap? I thought Jets get a 6th but pay the bulk of his salary.

I’m not sure if it was changed but that was the report I saw from Ian Rappaport. Chiefs sent 2027 6th rd pick in exchange for Fields + 7th rd pick and Jets pay 7M of Fields salary. It’s a pretty good deal for KC in terms of cap implications.

Can't be a pick swap bc Jets didnt have a 2027 7th rounder to give.  Thinks it's a great deal for Jets since they were going to release him for nothing

Not sure if paying the majority of salary for a guy to be on another team is ever a good deal. But it’s the Jets so not surprised at all.
