My philosophy, and I def could be wrong but it’s my opinion is that I like having a backup who was a prospect with really good physical traits. That’s what we got with Trubisky. He started games, was highly drafted and has some arm talent. In the worse case scenario you can catch lightning in a bottle with a guy who can physically do it. I don’t like the noodle armed high IQ back up. So my list would be: Keep Mitch or Find a guy with some elite physical traits: Trey Lance, Zach Wilson, Will Levis if released. Other guys I’d be ok with Sam Howell, Tyler Huntley, Sam Ehlinger (knows the system), Gardner Minshew. In any event, ideally, I would just keep Mitch. Quote

The lack of QBs available plays into this, but he did look good managing Brady’s offense in spot duty. There were times this past season where we had such a “game manager” gameplan, asking so little of our QB, that I thought Turbisky could execute it just as well as Allen. Arizona or Minnesota, even the Jets or Miami could be potential landing spots for him. Yeah, maybe a flu shot. 😅 Quote
Kelly No huddle Posted March 7 Posted March 7 (edited) Truly feel like he he's one of those guys that is excellent coming in as a number two but when he's a one, even as a bridge he's not as good. He's like the perfect backup. Frank was the same personality Don strock for Miami was similar from what older fans tell me He's our best backup in a long time Edited March 7 by Kelly to Allen Quote

I don’t think any team is signing him to just give him the shot, I think it will be a depth signing where he comes in and could earn a shot with play in camp or an injury (like Darnold got). But I think we just know more about what Mitch is right now than say Darnold, who was the more heralded QB coming out and really only got a short stint after Jets to try and show he can play, and on a bad team too that even Baker flamed out in. Mitch was the starter for a decent team in Pitt and was just not very good there. So I think he’s a classic injury creates opportunity guy than a guy that’s just going to be given another opportunity. Quote

Trubisky got a 2nd chance with Pittsburgh after the Bears and flamed out, certainly. But back in da day with da Bears, in 2018 (2nd year) and 2019 (3rd year), I thought he looked serviceable as a starter under Mark Helfrich and Matt Nagy (not so much under Dowell Loggains or Bill Lazor). I had him pegged as a Sam Bradford type of QB - a guy who could win games and play decently in the right system with the right coaching support and a decent run game and defense. I was surprised by how bad he looked in Pittsburgh. Yeah, it would be a 3rd chance I mean I don't think he's a bum at all I think he's just at the bridge starter level... So he can either be a backup on a good team or a bridge starter on bad team and take a lot of lumps Quarterbacks for the top 20 teams are basically set... Leaving bad teams or teams that are about to draft a quarterback and they're just looking for a mentor And taking a beating on a bad team is stressful.. but being the back of the Allen is a fun job, he's getting paid, very little stress and he's around friends Quote

He’s probably looking at a better backup option or bridge spot if it’s available. He knows he has a spot here if it doesn’t happen and Beane probably told him that but will let him explore best opportunity If he went to the Ravens as a backup he’d get all kinds of playing time. I don’t want people starting to think of him as a possible starter again because that would mean Josh missed a lot of playing time. Let’s have none of that. Quote

Maybe Howell, Ehlinger or Minshew but the guy I think would be fun to backup Allen for the next 4 years is Drew Allar. If he falls to the 5-6th round I’d be comfortable bringing him in. Kid has the tools of a first round QB but made some dumb decisions. Watching him 2 years ago I thought man this kid isn’t as talented as Josh but he plays like him and has a strong arm and some wheels. Why not if he falls and we’re set everywhere else at that point Quote

He's not the most mobile dude. So he would get beat to ***** on a bad team, be hesitant to throw down field, and make mistakes as he did in Pittsburgh. Quote
