Daniel Jones - Transition tag

When a franchise blows a top five draft pick on a QB that busts, really bad things generally happen.  We've watched it play out with the Jests.  We're about to watch it play out with Indy and Miami.  Without Jones, Indy has no leverage on a viable option at QB.  They also don't have a couple of their first round draft picks to fix the problem.  I'm just thankful that the Bills don't have to deal with a mess like this.

Colts traded 2 first round picks for Sauce. No ammo left. They believe Jones can work in that system and will be ready to go. That’s all I got.

They pushed their chips in with Sauce Gardener trade. I’m much higher on Jones than most. He was playing very well before he broke his leg and then his Achilles too. I don’t think last season was a fluke personally, I think he finally had an O line and his best WR wasn’t a PS castoff 

 

It’s a lot of money, but it’s one year. I wouldn’t give him a long term deal yet. This is the move the giants should have made after his first season with Daboll. Make him do it again, then decide

 

For one year, I have no issue with it. If they give him a huge deal between now and the season starting, I would have real concerns

Daniel Jones was really really good last year. He was solid in 22.

 

I was really down on him after the 24 season but he definitely looks like a legitimate starter. 

 

Solid QB if he has a strong offensive line and competent oc/ weapons

This is an example of the desperation there is out on the QB market.

 

This is why I expect to lose Trubisky. He is better than probably 10 starters that are out there.

Can someone that has followed him more closely explain this to me? He was a bust with the Giants. He was ok with the Colts but seemed to be regressing as the season went along. Now coming off Achilles tear. 

 

Who would keep this guy? No way I'm paying $36M for a single season amd no way I would sign him to a long term deal. 

Not sure what you are talking about. Jones had the Colts in 1st place in the 1-seed when he went down. He played great! Was he lighting the league on fire? No, but he was playing great and winning. He absolutely deserves this.

From what I heard, his regression started when teams started to figure out that he wasn't going through his progressions and was mainly relying on his first read. Teams started taking that away and made him hold the ball longer and he started struggling...hence their losing streak and then his injury.

 

A running QB that struggles when he has to go through his reads that just tore his Achilles probably isn't going to set the league on fire

I think this is just interesting that the transition tag tells you the Colts value Jones around 35/40 mill AAV and Jones probably wants more. So basically they said go out and see what your worth and then said we’ll match it

This is so wrong. It was not Jones fault - their D had injuries. They lost a few games by 3 points. Jones played great! The league knew it. Fans knew it. Not sure what games you watched...

Is he overpaid? yeah probably, but he’s improved and fit well in that offensive scheme. 

Basically, the Colts need to ask themselves, are they better off with DJ, or Murray, or Tua?  Their answer was DJ.  Hey, it’s their team.  They looked sharp until DJ went down.

I thought he was a dud with the giants.  He either was way too run-dependent and frequently injured, or too much of a checkdown artist.  Last year he looked to be in real control, with an offensive line and run game.  I think there were some injury issues down the stretch on the offensive side, but their defense also might just not be that good.

I would just keep tagging this guy until he flames out. Too risky to invest in long term.

I mean our defensive pass rusher tore his Achilles and he's probably going to be ready in September or October and that's a way more physical position than quarterback

When Jones was healthy last year the Colts were good ... Then he got hurt and the team collapsed ... Makes sense for the Colts to at least bring him back this year, they have nothing else except ... Is Richardson still there ? ... Never mind, I see they've given him permission to seek a trade.

He threw 15 TDs in 2022.

 

Colts went 1-4 in his last 5 games (he didn't finish the 5th) in which he thew 6 TDs and 5 INTs (of his total of 8 for the season).

 

He was well on his way to becoming his usual mediocrity when he was injured.  The wheels literally came off of his dream season.

That's fair. I thought he was pretty good in that playoff game with no wrs
