I hate the overtime suggestion and I think the no punting inside the 50 could have perverse outcomes. 3rd and 8 on my own 48..... am I really trying to convert? Or am I turtling and punting to avoid the risk of a short field.

Didn’t even realize it was still a thing- it’s Arena Football with slightly better QB play- I have a hard to getting into alternate leagues - maybe I’ll give it a go again

It's just like Arena football except it's played outdoors with 11 players on a 100-yard field.

Ha- not wrong-but  I was attempting to compare  the quality of the actual games

The overtime rule change makes me want to barf. I hate it. Not a fan of one foot in bounds counting as a catch either.

All the others seem interesting, at least.

Sorry for being snarky. I couldn't resist. It's really not bad football. I've seen worse NFL games. I'd rather watch UFL than baseball or golf.

Watched much of the game last night.  Terrible kicking by the Stallions guy.  I think the no punting rule has some potential but the four point FG thing really seems bizarre already.

This is the kind of stuff that makes me hate Tyler Bass, and the fact that Beane paid him.

Everyone knows that extending Bass was McDermott's decision...

AJ McCarron is now the coach of the Birmingham Stallions. He has a podcast and seems like he has great knowledge of football. It would not surprise me if he is successful.

One of the best college QBs I’ve ever seen. Lethally accurate and rarely ever turned the ball over. He was a big contender for the Heisman his 3rd year where he threw 30 TDs and 3 picks.

That's exactly what the XFL did.

Interesting, no punting inside opponents 50 yard line. So if you're opponent has it at their 48 yard line, 3rd and 15, you would want to give up 3 yards so they have to go for it on 4th and 12.  The rule looks like it's forcing teams to be aggressive, but it may have the opposite effect. In the aforementioned scenario, teams my opt to take a knee on 3rd down and punt.

Yup. Be interesting to see how often these unintended consequences play out.

3rd and long just inside the 50, drop back a couple yards, take a knee and punt.

3rd and long inside the 43, drop back a few yards to the 43, take a knee and kick a 4 pt field goal.

If it needs to change (it doesn't) I think Field goals should be worth more the closer you get.

It would reward longer drives or getting turnovers deep in the opponents territory.

It could add to teams being more aggressive late in games trying to make up deficits rather than more passive trying the FG from farther out when behind.

The NFL doesn't need this.

Just simplify "what is a catch" so it's easy and obvious.

AJ McCarron has the resume of someone who could make a good coach. He was a very successful college QB who was on 3 National Championship teams (2 of which he was the starter for) in what was the peak of Nick Saban's college dominance as in McCarron's 5 seasons there they were national champions 3 times.

Played 9 years in the NFL was on a few playoff teams (the Bengals early on in his career made the playoffs twice and then was on a 10-6 Texans team in 2018) bounced around a bit after his first four years but being on 4 teams and under 5 regimes (the 2023 Bengals were completely different then the one that he entered the league with) in that span is actually a positive given that it gives you a taste of different ways teams are managed.

Then he went over and played in the XFL/UFL for 2 more years getting a feel for the game there which probably helped him get the coaching gig there knowing the league better.

No guarantees but that's a lot of football to be around and he's only in his mid-30's so he's got the chance to coach a few years in the UFL and then go into the NFL as a QB coach and then who knows?
