I read that they were over and done with, Mahomes wasn't any good anymore, and the league had caught up to Reid's schemes! They should finish 3rd in that division now on an on-going basis. Of course I am being snarky but IF you truly believe that then it would be odd to think we will just win forever "because Allen" "Because Mahomes" played in 5 Super Bowls but he's done and over with now and no longer a threat in the AFC, but "Because Allen" means we have an 11-12 win floor in perpetuity. It's just odd thinking. I don't think the Chiefs are done but it is realistic if Mahomes struggles in 2026 given the injury he is coming off of. He probably will rebound and look like his old self in 2027. Best case late in the 2026 season. The AFCW has gotten better. I am not saying the Chiefs can't win the division but now they will be challenged for it unlike in years past. Quote

What happens if a big star gets in a car crash and dies? God forbid that ever were to happen, but how would that affect the cap? Would everything immediately come due or are there some stipulations where a team can choose to spread it out over a number of years and it's considered a special situation? Big Turk.......if Uber is your side hustle, please don't pick up any of our players. Quote
MJS Posted February 18 Posted February 18 The Bills do the same with Allen every year. It is baked into the high value contracts like the ones QBs sign. 1 hour ago, TheFunPolice said: No worries! Alphadawg7 Posted February 18 Posted February 18 I mean - nothing to see here than KC doing what every team in the NFL is about to do who needs cap space for 2026. 1 1 Quote

Even the first time he was with KC he repeatedly said it was about the money. He went to Miami because it was about the money. He will probably get offers bigger than what KC can offer. At this point I can pretty much guarantee he Hill will go where he is offered the most money Maybe, but if I recall, he has made several comments over the past year or so about wanting to return home, etc. (implying KC). it is possible that spending a few seasons with a dysfunctional organization made him want to get back with a “well run” contender. And yes, I get the irony, since he is often the source of dysfunction in the first place. 1 Quote

Mikey152 Posted February 19 Posted February 19 Out of curiosity, if the cap REALLY doesn’t matter, why did the Chiefs trade Tyreek? Why do teams ever trade good players for picks? The cap is very real. It 100% impacts roster decisions. Exhibit 1 is Curtis Samuel. The same people that say cap doesn’t matter are all too ready to cut him to save 6 million in cap space this season. Maybe you don’t love Curtis Samuel, but I’m not confident they find 6 guys better than him to start the season. I’d certainly rather keep him over Palmer, but cap hit makes Samuel the obvious choice. 1 Quote

Because their ownership isn't willing to write big signing bonuses to push cap hits into the future. Teams like the Bengals might as well be playing in a different league from teams like the Eagles. The salary cap is supposed to eliminate imbalanced spending but it only does on the surface. Cash rich owners that are willing to spend still operate at an advantage. Kelly No huddle Posted February 19 Posted February 19 2026 should be a rebuild year for KC. Do not rush your generational QB back They need to replace Kelce Rice is going to get a longer suspension They need 2 new wrs They need a starting RB They need another legitimate pass rusher They need depth at cb Quote
Success Posted February 19 Posted February 19 I bet it's us & them again in the AFCCG next year. Which would feel kind of right. It would be nice to finally beat them in the playoffs on the way to our 1st title. 1 Quote

What you say is true however the salary cap in the NFL levels the playing field much more than the other North American pro sports. The Los Angeles Dodgers payroll is over $400 million whereas the Miami Marlins is $77 million. That's more than 5 times as much. In the NBA, the Golden State Warriors are spending over 50% on payroll more than the Brooklyn Nets. The NFL even has a closer payroll variance than the NHL does. Thank goodness for the salary cap or there wouldn't be an NFL team in Buffalo. 1 Quote

The Curtis Samuel discussion revolves around value. Can you find a better player at a $6M cap hit? The answer is definitely. If he was valuable to the Bills he’d be back. @HappyDays laid out the cap above. It’s only real if your owner won’t continue writing the checks. The teams circumevent the cap spend by writing checks today, so that you can spread out the cap hit on the bonus. They also add void years which are just accounting years to spread the hit even further. With the cap continuing to increase, especially with new TV deals, international games and potentially an 18th game, you’ll always be able to outrun the bill for years. That holds especially true if your big money players are still playing well. Don’t be fooled though, there is a class system within the NFL. The owners that cut those checks give their teams a massive advantage. We should be thankful that our owner is willing to do that. Edited February 19 by Kirby Jackson 2 Quote

JohnnyCash Posted February 19 Posted February 19 (edited) I like MTC on Sirius NFLR, but yesterday Kirwin was carrying on about this transaction. Am I mixing it up with something else, or can’t the teams do this conversion from base salary to signing bonus without the player having any say? He was making it seem like this great move by Mahomes to help the team. Haven’t the Bills done this with Allen at least once, maybe more? Also, no mention of the Chiefs still being over the cap even after this move. Edited February 19 by JohnnyCash 1 Quote

Revenue sharing and the salary floor are bigger for competitive balance from my perspective. 1 Quote
