Being reported by multiple sources. Get to work Beane

Yup. And they will likely do Chris Jones next which opens up a ton more. Despite starting so far in the red they can clear a TON of cash.

There were people on here last week talking about the Chiefs in cap hell. 🤣🤣 They can be like $70m-$80M under without doing anything dramatic. The media really doesn’t do people any favors when they talk about “cap space.” Fear mongering and creating false narratives for clicks is lame. If they are going to talk about the cap, they should understand it. If they do understand it, they shouldn’t mislead people as to where teams will be. Teams set up contracts to manipulate to create the space. We shouldn’t act surprised when this kind of thing happens because that’s what it was designed to do!! I get so frustrated because there are constant conversations that aren’t reality based with the talking heads.

Whoa, still 11 over after that restructure. I recall a certain Chief fan on here telling us the cap would never impact them while Mahomes and Andy were there. I think the offensive line is exhibit A of how wrong that take has been.

For context, they're still over the cap, even with Mahomes restructure

So they’re now 11M over the cap with this move?  I wouldn’t say that’s “massive” although the Mahomes number is.

Im assuming they have some others they’ll make to put them in a similar position for when we do our cuts/restructures.

Biggest difference between them and us is they’ve drafted better lately so they don’t have a gross amount of void year cap paying players who aren’t going to be on their team next year.

Freeing up 44 mil in one re structure is pretty big. I'd be ecstatic if the bills did the same with Allen

OK... lets be clear.  OP, this is a very misleading title.

"Mahomes" didn't restructure. The Chiefs restructured his contract to free up cap space.

This is not something they need his permission to do or to even ask him or get his approval to do. That's not how the contracts work. By definition, the team can restructure the contract anytime they want for any reason without getting any sort of approval from the player as long as the money doesn't change and it follows whatever guidance is in the CBA.

And why would any player object to getting all of their money up front in the form of signing bonus to lower their cap hit? It's literally the biggest win-win there is in sports in terms of helping both a team and a player.

This isn't Mahomes "doing them a favor", this is the Chiefs managing their cap by restructuring his contract, which was likely already built into the initial contract to give them this flexibility when they wanted to use it.

It’s a restructure, not a renegotiation. This mechanism has existed in his contract since he signed it. You can easily find online exactly how much cap space the Bills can create by restructuring Allen’s contract.

A typical contract restructure is when a team converts part of a player’s base salary (or a roster bonus) into a signing bonus to create immediate cap relief. This does, however, increase the player’s yearly cap hits thereafter by pushing more dead money into future years.

They certainly do. They can get to 60-70M without cutting anyone of significant need, with simple restructuring. They are in a good spot

Exactly. People seriously misunderstand the way this works. Many times players don't even know it happened until after it's happened and they are told.

This is a built in stipulation in the CBA and is essentially the biggest win-win between team and player in sports in regards to contracts. No team or player would ever object to doing this, so let's stop pretending the player somehow "did the team a favor".

No, the player was not consulted, asked or many times even told. The team has the right to do this whenever they want and it's typically built into the contract as a plan for the future. Sometimes even several restructured are built in.
