He really was. I wonder if his career here would be better remembered had he not gone to the USFL? It's a shame that whole era of Bills are largely forgotten. Ask a fan in their 30s about Butler and Lewis and you will likely see a blank face.

Fans born in the 90’s have no memory of players from the late 70’s?

Largely, no. No one really talked about them for years. They had the unfortunate task of being the era before the Super Bowl era. And it's a shame because they had some talent on those teams.

The part where it says he wound up being traded to SF in 86 is incorrect, both year and team. He was traded to the Rams in '87 as part of the Halloween nite trade that brought Bennett to Buffalo. Pretty sure we acquired him as the last pick received from trading OJ to San Francisco.

Wrong. Eric Dickerson was the RB involved in the amazing Halloween Trade that had multiple Draft picks and ED involved in ‘88 which provided us with Cornelius Bennett

Actually I'm correct. Remember it like it was yesterday. You're correct about Eric Dickerson, he went from LA to the Colts. Bennett went from the Colts to the Bills. Greg Bell went from the Bills to the Rams along with 2 number 1's and a number 2. The Colts gave up a 1 first rounder and 2 second rounders as well. All this without searching the world wide web!

On Halloween night I believe.  I was at a Halloween party at UConn- and someone had TV on- I saw Bills trade for Bennett- it was an awesome night!

I mis-read your post. I believed we were talking about Cribbs. My apologies.

That team, the Chuck Knox era, was good enough to go to the Super Bowl in the AFC.  Ferguson’s injury in the playoffs ruined their chance.  There were several bad years after them, Kay Stevenson and then Hank Bollough, before the Polian/Levy era.

4.1 YPC for his career.
Averaged about 3 TD's per year.
Became a journeyman after his 5th season in the league.

I think we are using the word awesome generously.

He was good. He also openly hated Buffalo, so...

He never played in the 70's. 80's only. But your point still stands.

The loss to the Chargers in the 1980 divisional playoffs was tough.  We had an excellent team that year.  The Bermuda Triangle on defense.  Jerry Butler Frank Lewis and Cribbs on offense.   Ferguson playing on that busted ankle killed us.

One injury that season that has mostly been forgotten was Jeff Nixon. He was playing really well at FS; when he got hurt they were fortunate to get Bill Simpson, who I think Knox talked out of retirement (or persuaded Ralph to pay him more than the Rams would). But he wound up getting burned on the deep TD that won the game for SD. Not saying on that individual play Nixon would have done better, but he was a REALLY promising player who never got back to that level. The next year Bill Simpson wound up clinching the WC game against the Jets with a late pick. And the week after that, Cribbs was having a huge game against the Bengals and got injured on kind of a crappy play. It's always something with us. One play here and there and we all are less miserable people.

Edit: I should have watched the video; two of the three plays I mentioned were in it.

If they would have beaten the Chargers, then the AFCCG would have been Oakland at Buffalo. The Bills had already beaten the Raiders at home that season 24-7. The only score the Raiders got that day was off of a pick 6. Good chance the Bills would have won the AFCCG and faced the Eagles in the Super Bowl. Ferguson being hurt did kill the Bills chances.

But still 1 first down late in that game and we would have won, They gave it to Cribbs up the middle on 3rd and short and he was stopped. Had they gave it to Cribbs and went to the outside I'm pretty sure he gets that first down. I remember being very upset by that call.

Before his contract dispute…35 TD’s in 4 seasons along with roughly 5600 yards from scrimmage.

He wasn’t the same when he returned, but 4 very good years to start his career.
