Playoffs and especially the SB showed that pressure gets to Maye; messes with his brain, and he panics into into interceptions and fumbles. Josh is so much better than him; next year let the dogs loose against Maye like Seattle did, and kill any remaining silly ideas of a Patriots dynasty. Let's get a number one WR for Josh and a freaking edge rusher, then Maye and Vrabel will know, you're no Brady and Belichick. Go Bills, let's get them next year! 9 3 1 2 2 Quote
May Day 10 Posted February 9 Posted February 9 The Patriots should be able to parlay this into being relevant for a handful of seasons. Anyone, especially their fans, who are expecting anything close to what was the previous dynasty: pretty much expected AFC East Titles, perpetual and predictable Superbowl appearances, mostly wins over 20 years. That is unprecedented and will be tough/impossible to duplicate, especially with the same franchise, different management. Even a dynasty like the Chiefs just experienced is far-fetched. It is tough to win a conference and harder a Superbowl. There is a lot of luck involved along with so many variables. Pats fans are going to undoubtedly be disappointed if they are expecting anything approaching what Brady/Belichick was able to bring them 1 Quote

Next year the talk will still be on repeating in the AFC. The talk will be unfinished business. What will likely happen, while the simpleton sportscasters annoint them as the new team to beat in the AFC East, they will take a step back. The way they won this year is just not sustainable. They had crazy luck in who they faced and who those teams were missing. They were very fortunate with injury on their own squad. And they really took a lot of teams but surprise beyond the midway point of the year. And their luck continued in the playoffs. It's just not a battle tested team. Next year will be a challenge. They aren't sneaking up on anyone. The opposite actually. Teams will use them as their "measuring stick" game. They are going to get punched in the mouth early and often. Expectations will be sky high from the jump. And yeah, they have a lot of money to spend. Doesn't mean it will be spent well. Meanwhile, we become that team that took a step back. No division title. No Super Bowl when the "path was easy". Team couldn't stop the run. Nothing at WR. New head coach. And we are going to be completely different next year and be the team others aren't prepared for. skibum Posted February 9 Posted February 9 I am never sad when Seattle wins (excepting, of course, v. Bills). Great city, great fans, and a lot of cool teams and legendary players over the years. Also, a tip of the hat to Sam Darnold. He's a good dude, he's been through a lot, and he showed he can make great plays in the big games. He's become the underdog of the 2018 QB class. If Josh couldn't be the first of the group to win, I'd rather it was Darnold than Lamar or Baker. 5 1 Quote

Re: dynasties and the future of Maye, the comparison I was doing in the back of my mind was Maye in this year’s playoffs/Super Bowl versus #17 in his first post-season—i.e., the January 2020 playoff game versus Houston. I came away from that game thinking Josh had played a bit out of control at times but was close, and with with a little more experience could definitely rise to the playoff occasion. I wonder…could a Pats fan draw the same conclusion about Maye, based on his work in 3 playoff games and the Super Bowl? Am legitimately unsure and I do not really trust my judgment anyway because I dislike the Patriots so much…. Quote

Loved the city and the stadium. it was pretty cool seeing the green ponchos come out and place did get pretty loud. We got the result though that SUnday....Keon had a great game too Quote

Success Posted February 10 Posted February 10 I didn't realize how much I needed that result until it was over. It was really the way the Pats lost. It completely reinforced what everyone was saying - mid team propped up by an historically easy schedule. And we didn't really get to see Maye against hard competition in the regular season. He clearly built up his stats against that easy schedule, and turned out in the postseason to be nowhere near the current top tier of QB's. I think he'll be alright, but last night wasn't some anomaly - he was bad throughout the playoffs. The Pats are our biggest competition for the division- but I'm not that worried after last night. Slack_in_MA Posted February 10 Posted February 10 FWIW, Boston sports talk radio today was pretty critical of the team— Will Campbell’s turnstile impression, Maye’s panic under pressure, McDaniels’ play calling, Diggs’ disappearance. The caveat is optimism that the team is young, the defense is good, and they have a lot of cap space. Personally, I’m worried about the “arms race” for WR and pass rush that’s likely between the Bills and Pats. The top of the AFCE is going to be interesting for the foreseeable future, IMO. 1 Quote

Another 15 year run - at least 3 more rings! It's a level of delusion that is unmatched. Last night was somewhat of a wet blanket on their aspirations, but they still think the division is theirs & that we'll be like the Jets now or something. Mikie2times Posted February 10 Posted February 10 (edited) The historically easy strength of schedule has been talked about a lot, but what hasn’t been discussed enough is the impact success has on what comes next. It is much easier to beat sub .500 teams when you are not the opponent everyone has circled on the calendar like the Bills have been for years. Staying at the top of the mountain is far harder than making the climb. We saw this firsthand with Josh Allen. Early on, defenses rushed him recklessly and allowed him to extend plays to his right. Over time, teams adjusted. Containment improved, rush lanes became disciplined, and defensive schemes evolved specifically to limit what he does best. Success forces adaptation from everyone else. The Patriots’ biggest challenge next season may actually be the success they had this year. Opponents will prepare differently, expectations will rise, and the margin for error will shrink as the fan base begins expecting linear progression. Just look at how this applies to the Bills. Whenever Miami became a legitimate threat, we elevated our intensity because we knew what was at stake. In our first loss to New England this season, we did not approach that game with the same urgency as past division battles because they were not perceived as a true contender at the time.
