For this of us old timers, Sonny was the most pure passer in his day. Often bailed out the "Over The Hill" Redskins when Billy Kilmer was laying an egg as he often. Alleged party animal which is why he was a backup under George Allen... Kilmer couldn't even hold Jurgensen's jock. RIP Sonny!

Well said, I was a huge Sonny fan. What a cool gunslinger. He was a little chubby with zero elusiveness but with the most effortless over the top quick delivery and what a leader. His receivers would run through a wall for him. Other than Kelly and Josh, my favorite of all time. That Redskin team with Allen coaching was a great watch. They never had draft choices because Allen would trade them for veteran starters. Sonny was als great with the Eagles when he teamed up with Tommy Macdonald and Pete Retslaff. In honor of Sonny have a Cutty and water.

I remember Billy Kilmer replacing an injured Sonny and poor Sonny riding the pine for the rest of his career. But it didn’t diminish his stature as a legendary QB.

Didnt get to see Sonny play.  However, I am of the era where Dad's and Grandfather's received free NFL Films VHS with their Sports Illustrated subscriptions.  My Grandfather had a stack on the hearth.  I spent many a Saturday afternoon as a kid tearing through those videotapes getting to know guys like Art Donovan and Sonny Jurgensen.   RIP Sonny you were without question a one of one.

Before my time but I've seen lots of highlights over the years. In some ways he looks like a modern day QB transported back in time. The trick throws behind his back were something else, perfect spiral

What a player. If all you wanted was a guy to stand in the pocket to throw beautiful and accurate spirals, Sonny was the guy. Great thrower.

Sonny was the color commentator on local broadcasts of University of Maryland basketball - yes, basketball - games. There was a game I went to in 1970 when Maryland played South Carolina. South Carolina was undefeated and ranked number 2.  Carolina played 2-3 zone exclusively - I mean, they never, ever got out of it. In those days, there was no shot clock and no three-point baskets.  Maryland was completely out classed, so their coach, Lefty Driessell, decided to shorten the game. Carolina made a free throw to go up 1-0. Maryland came up the floor, pulled the ball out about 30 feet from the basket and just stood there, waiting for Carolina to come out of their zone. They didn't.  Maryland ran 12 minutes - yes, 12 minutes - off the clock. Fans were going nuts.

What does this have to do with Sonny Jurgenson? Well, I didn't see his broadcast of the game, because I was at the game, but friends who watched it said that in the middle of the 12-minute run of nothing, Sonny was reading Shakespeare to the audience!!!  What a character.

Maryland scored after 12 minutes to go up 2-1, Carolina scored to go up 3-2, and Maryland held the ball for 7 minutes and took the final shot of the half. They scored. 4-3 at the half!  Game ended tied at 18 or 20 or 22 or so.  They went to overtime, and Carolina went up 30-25 with about 20 seconds left. Maryland scored, stole the inbounds pass, scored, stole the inbounds pass again and scored as time ran out. 31-30!  Best basketball game I've ever been to.

When the next poll came out, South Carolina no longer was #2. St. Bonaventure and Bob Lanier moved into the #2 spot.

I met his son at a Hooter’s in Raleigh, NC about a decade ago. When I say that he’s a spitting image of his pops, it’s not hyperbole. Sonny was a quarterback who could play today. Enough mobility and a helluva an arm.
