Don't you like watching the opponents convert 3rd and 20 for first downs on the Bills defense.

Yeah something happened because the other day I was catching some highlights and I see one from the 13 seconds game and I hear Nantz talking about the Bills defense and he goes, "and now up against the best third down defense in the league." I knew I wasn't nuts, I knew remembered a season where they were actually pretty good on 3rd down.

I like what he's saying about stopping the run, controlling the tempo of the game, and forcing offenses to be 1-dimensional.

Sounds like a big departure from McDermott's "we don't care about the run, only the pass" style.

Which could mean giving up big plays more often if you don't have top man CBs.

They were. They were decent on 3rd and short and therefore highly ranked.

It is always the 3rd and Longs that bit us. 3rd and 3, we probably stop it. 3rd and 18, just start moving those chains now.

If Josh gets a SB with Buffalo, Jim Leonhard may be the biggest reason why

Absolutely. How quickly the defense can learn the schemes and systems of what Leonhard wants to do along with Beane getting players who fit into his defense. Bottom line if Allen can go into the playoffs with a strong defense (something he has never really had here) then the Bills have an excellent chance to compete for and win a Super Bowl

I just joined late.  Did he say if we are running a 3-4 yet?

I didnt hear anything that specific. Nor do I think he'd commit to that. I'd bet he'd answer they will run multiple fronts.

He's talking about building the scheme around the current talent right now.

edit:

Sal just asked. "Much more fluid (between 3-4 and 4-3)"

Says a 3-4 and 4-3 is much more fluid than it used to be, due to offenses running more spread offenses.  Says that positions don't specifically require a certain type of player, and his job is to adapt to the strengths.  Wants "Swiss Army Knife" players with high football IQ's.

Wants to create a lot of different looks to confuse the opposing offense.

I'm okay with more variance through the regular season if it raises the floor against playoff caliber teams.

Man defense was never a focal point of McD's defense, so it stands to reason that it would have been practiced less. Maybe those same CBs look better when the emphasis is shifted.

They've got above average talent in the back end, imo.

That being said, I'd gladly take the occasional big play being given up for more quick stops that put the ball back in Allen's hands.

Exactly.

"Limiting possessions" when you have the guy who has scored more TDs than anyone else over the last decade, is certainly a strategy...
