People's idea about the way 3-4 nose tackles play is 10 years out of date. Lots of teams use smaller, quicker penetrators at nose including, for example, the Broncos whose starting nose is the 290lbs Malcolm Roach. What is Roachs a length vs Oliver? And why keep Oliver at his cap number vs one of the young guys we drafted? Quote

Their arms are the same length. Roach is an inch taller. He is exactly the template for what that particular scheme wants from its nose. And why keep him over thr young guys? Because he is better. A lot better. 2 1 Quote

He was brought in for McDermotts smaller DL setup, so he doesn't fit in any DL position we will be running. IF healthy, he is worth a mid to low 1st rounder, maybe more. We need the draft picks, we need to replace him on the DL. I did some research, Very in depth research...Ok Chat GPT and google, and it seems he is worth a 1at rounder IF he is healthy and I think he will be. I'd do it for a third. I'd run to the phone if someone was talking about it first. I'd really be surprised if they got a first for him. 2 1 Quote
Kelly to Allen Posted February 4 Posted February 4 (edited) There is a 21 million dollar cap hit if traded before June 1 in 2026 This wouldn't make sense. Especially considering he is one of the elite penetrating defensive tackles at only age 28. We need a few more Blue Chip players... trading one away doesn't make sense in my opinion Edited February 4 by Kelly to Allen 2 2 2 Quote

He is, at absolute worst, their 2nd best player on defense. And the "he doesn't fit this scheme" stuff is balony. People are way out of date on how 3-4 is normally played in the NFL. 3 1 1 2 Quote

US Egg Posted February 4 Posted February 4 Leonhard must have some flexibility in his system to work with Oliver Quote
Brand J Posted February 4 Posted February 4 Ed is the best player on the DL when healthy. He’s taken over multiple games and even his own linemate Deone Walker said he’s never seen a performance like that out of a DT (Baltimore game). I think the best you could do is a 2nd round pick and I don’t think that’s worth it. Would love to see how he’d perform in Leonard’s attacking defense versus Sean’s. 1 1 Quote
KentuckyBillsFan Posted February 4 Posted February 4 I think you could get a 2nd rounder for Oliver.. I'd strongly consider it, especially if it eases the cap situation (which I'm not sure of) Quote

I know he's not Ted Washington or Sam Adams, but I remember Jeff Wright playing that position fairly well and I don't think he was as big or fast as Ed (even allowing for the relative growth of players over the last 3 decades). Of course, it helped Jeff that he had Bruce Smith next to him and Biscuit threatening from the other side. You might not remember Jeff Wright as well as you think lol...he was a major liability for those Super Bowl teams 1 2 Quote

Livinginthepast Posted February 4 Posted February 4 Doesnt stay healthy enough to get to his potential. Brilliant in a few games but MIA in a lot more. Just not worth the risk especially if the scheme is different next year and unlike some of the other players that haven't panned out (Elam, Coleman etc) he still has trade value. Quote
NewEra Posted February 4 Posted February 4 I love Ed. On the field and off. This is about putting together the best team. If that happens to be without Ed, it’ll have to be without Ed. 1 Quote

I'm not sure. Beane loves his 3s... just sayin LOL... I think a 2nd is a stretch, a 4th not enough... I think a 3 makes sense... depending on the cap savings.. like in the end.. the CAP savings could be a big factor here... this is a Bplus contract on a C player that would be a big savings... we pretty much played all year without him... I actually thought the D improved over the course of the year when Bernard and He we out... not saying it was a direct result... I am just not sure the player moves the needle that much to justify the contract. 1 Quote

BillMafia716ix Posted February 4 Posted February 4 Definitely think it’s time to move on from Ed. He’s a good player but he spends more time on the injured list than on the field. Quote
hondo in seattle Posted February 4 Posted February 4 Ed isn't a big, run-stuffing, middle-clogging NT. But maybe that's not how Leonard would use him? We have no Pro Bowlers and few really good players on our D. It would be a shame to lose one of the best because of scheme fit. Generally speaking, sending your best players packing isn't a successful formula for achieving a Lombardi. Then again, Ed might be so ill-suited to Leonard's scheme that he isn't one of the best anymore. Quote
