Okay so I have a question to those more in the know about these types of things than I seeing as I am just a fan !!

Josh has been going to Palmer over the years to work on what he feels is his short comings to improve his game & has to the point of being an elite NFL - QB so what does a guy like this do for Josh ?

Does he just watch Josh to make sure his mechanics are working the way they should does he get him a drink when he needs it What ?

Josh has said he is his own toughest critic so why do they need a guy like this on the staff as a fan I don't get it !! Thanks for the help ...

Maybe I'm wrong but not all QB coaches work much on mechanics.  Instead, they break down film, help develop and install the game plan, discuss offensive philosophy, and maybe act as the QB's therapist and leadership mentor.

The reasons for not getting involved in mechanics are varied.  Some QB coaches just aren't expert in QB mechanics.  Some don't want to eff with mechanics midseason.  And some don't want to interfere with the biomechanic work QBs do with gurus like Jordan Poyer in the offseason.

I've never played in the NFL so my head might be up my butt.  But that's my understanding.

Jordan Poyer is incredible. Former All-Pro at safety, and moonlights as a QB guru in the offseason. What a guy!

BTW, I learned from Hard Knocks that the Bills have a throwing mechanics guy on staff. Don’t remember his name or title, but they had a whole segment on him and the tech he uses. Also talked golf swing mechanics with Josh a bit in that episode.

Was he on staff, or was he just a guy they paid to come in during camp?

I think he was brought in if I recall.

Looks like Hardegree has a heck of a pedigree.

Looks to me like he can't hold a job.  Unless he is leaving for more money each time, that might  be understandable.

If he "couldnt hold a job" how does he keep getting....jobs?

What are we doing here?

Yeah he's not on staff.  Chis Hess - he was who Josh worked with to fix his mechanics after his rookie year.  Josh invited him to come visit at camp this year, which is what was shown on Hard Knocks

He's not on staff. He is on contract. I'm pretty sure he said he works with multiple QBs and teams.

Thanks for sharing.  I thought I had watched all of Hard Knock but apparently not.

When I first learned some QB coaches don't teach biomechanics, I thought it was a very weird, missed opportunity.  Glad to know we have someone.

Somewhere I heard that some teams communicate a lot with Jordan Palmer and treat him almost as if he were a member of the staff.

Josh Allen:

6 interceptions, 5 fumbles and was sacked 14 times in 2024. QB rating 101.8

10 interceptions, 12 fumbles and was sacked 40 times in 2025. QB Rating 102.2

The Bills in general need to stop limiting their own possessions. The pressure on Allen to generate long slow drives to help a bad defense, led to him holding the ball too long. Some saw it as hero ball, to me it was Allen being put in a bad situation. Brady called offense preferred by Coach McDermott. I believe this new tandem of Brady, Carmichael and Hardegree will give the Bills a much better passing offense, especially in terms of routes and concepts. They will also provide the new coaching voices Allen clearly needs. Hardegree also called plays which makes him a better QB coach, that skill may come in handy down the line should Carmichael move on. Good hire, again.

Other things that would reduce turnovers and sacks?  Pushing the ball down the field with good WRs.  Now, I am not saying to say to do this every play or anything close to it.  But when you play a ball control offense where most everything is short, the defense can get more people closer to the LOS and shrink the field.  When your WRs can't get open quickly, time runs out faster with so many defenders crammed in close.  The other thing it does is since your ability to get chunk plays is diminished, it forces you to run more plays and be perfect on those plays to score.  So, there is an increase in the number of opportunities you have for a negative play.  And when you have Josh Allen, let's face it.....a quick timing based offense is not his strong suit.  When you don't play to his strengths, that also increases the chance of negative plays.

Look, there are a lot of reasons he had more turnovers and, especially sacks, last season.  But our roster and scheme did him no favors and we have to hope that Beane and Brady learned from it and things look a lot different this season.

Can someone explain to me what exactly a QB coach does?   I've always been a bit mystified by this particular role.    What is his practice day like?; what is his game day like?

In charge of the nitty gritty I'd imagine.

Making sure technique and mechanics are fundamentally sound. Making sure they are processing the playcall correctly.

One thing that's interesting to me is this had to be a position Josh was at least in the discussion on - not necessarily making the decision, but giving feedback if/how he thought he could work with him etc.  If Josh was happy with Curry I would have thought they would have just kept him. - or there was something about this guy that for some reason stood out as superior

I would imagine a lot of their focus is going over the game plan and the upcoming defense.

You're stealing one of my takes (which I in turn stole from someone else)!

Honestly, being able to control the ball is great, but you do it at the end of halves and otherwise boat race people with wonder man josh.

I recently read that the first quarter tells you who the better coaches are, and what stands out to me is how great we were scoring on our opening drive, but how ass we were in first halves vs second halves.  Like the team was asleep and had to be woken up.

The exact behavior may vary from team to team.

But from what I understand, the QB Coach spends a lot of time during the week breaking down film with the QBs.  They review past performance (decision making etc.) and mostly work on the next opponent: breaking down their defense, coverage recognition, pressure rules in given situations, redzone and third down scenarios, installing the game plan, etc.

During the game, the QB Coach may talk to the QB about his pre or post snap reads and decision making.  He might also help keep the QB's head on straight: encourage him if he's down, relax him if he's too tight, calm him if he's too excited, and otherwise act as his therapist.

I was very surprised at Josh’s metrics this year in terms of catchable ball rate, accuracy, etc. I thought he had a down year but it was actually one of his best. He made a few horrific throws to wide open guys that would have won/changed games (Shakir, Kincaid) which must have biased my opinion. He did this on a busted foot. The guy is an absolute juggernaut. Get him some WRs who can catch the deep ball and he will be unstoppable. I don’t think a QB coach is going to be too involved in his mechanics, that stuff has to be worked on in the offseason/pre season.

How come he never lasts more than a year or two at any one place. (would have to check if those teams all fired their coaches so he was forced to move on)

Nah, not all firings.  Some promotions.  He's basically been a satellite of 2 coaches his entire career.

Basically he went wherever Gase went from 2014 to 2020.  Gase moved from OC in Denver to OC in Chicago when Fox was fired in Denver for being successful but not successful enough and he took Gase with him as OC.  Gase was then hired as HC of the Dolphins, then fired and hired as HC of the Jets.  Hardegree went with him 2x.

Gase hasn't worked as a coach in the NFL since the Jets fired him in 2020, so Hardegree moved to the Patriots then followed Josh McDaniels to the Raiders.
Then McDaniels took a year off, and Hardegree took a job with Brian Callahan in Tennessee.

The connection seems to be they were both Offensive Assistants with Denver in 2014.

Jordan himself has talked about this on some interviews.  That he has QB he works with during the season reviewing a game on Tuesday, and that it's focused on mechanics.  I dunno about "treat him almost as if he were a member of the staff" but I imagine he has a confidentiality agreement that allows them to share game film an outsider wouldn't normally see.

Being an assistant coach in the NFL is tough.  The boss gets fired, you generally lose your job as well.
