It's really hard to take coaches from other teams in the NFL because it has to be a promotion. The Bills had a high-end open spot on team that wouldn't have the responsibility of calling plays. It's a missed opportunity to invest in really getting a passing game that is reflective of the current NFL. While I would typically agree with this thought process, in this situation, it needed to be an experienced hire. The other tough sell for some of those younger guys is that they won't call plays. And while I don't think that is be all end all, it clearly hurt guys like Udinski, Davis Webb, and Nate Scheelhaase in this cycle. Those guys have to go somewhere that they will call plays. 3 4 Quote

Mangas will get a position coach job. He hasn't even been that so far. Pete has a lot of experience in the exact role we are hiring him for. Essentially offensive gameplanner and in game spotter. He will be Joe's eyes and ears in the box to feed him information to use in playcalling and will be a trusted voice. I don't love it though. You are not getting any fresh new ideas from Pete. You are just getting a trusted confidant. And while he is experienced in this role it leaves us still without, as yet, anyone with HC experience on the staff for Joe to lean on with those duties. It feels a bit Dennison in 2017 to me (I know context and situation different Offensive HC calling plays etc) but call me slightly underwhelmed. 4 1 2 4 Quote
RkFast Posted January 30 Posted January 30 This is EXACTLY what I wanted, even if McD stayed. A strong veteran offensive mind with lots of experience. I like it. 2 1 1 Quote

Not sure why he'd leave Denver for a lateral move, I'd assume he's going to to be the new OC in Denver which makes more sense imo. Quote

My first thought when Brady mentioned not hiring his friends was "lets see where DJ ends up". This tends to prove he was telling the truth. I do expect Mangas to end up QB coach if Curry leaves, but we'll see. Still waiting on that big DC announcement... 1 1 Quote

Webb withdrew from the Raiders search this morning after the Broncos fired OC Joe Lombardi yesterday. Pretty sure Webb is gonna get the Denver OC job... and I can't see him coming to Buffalo on a lateral move. I think Webb gets Denver, the Giants, or the Ravens. I think the lure of calling plays may put him in those other places. Lack of calling plays probably hurt him in this hiring cycle. 1 Quote

And are they essentially a substitute teacher throughout the week? Do most duties of an OC - build you offensive philosophy and playbook, adapt to your personnel. During the season, design some 70 offensive plays for the game for an specific opponent. Run the practice. Probably script the opening 10-15 plays. Most likely they work with the play caller in designing plays. The only thing they don't do is call plays on game day. Calling plays is a somewhat different skill to feel the moment, having a good understanding what the D might do in that particular situation, and your own players conditioning (not over use some guys running deep routes for example). Ethan in Cleveland Posted January 30 Posted January 30 Seems like a solid hire. Hopefully will give Brady some solid advice during the week. Quote

I always expected the DC to be the guy with HC experience. That way Joe has a guy that can run that side of the ball and not worry too much. Not sure who that is at this point. I know Schwartz is the popular name, but he's still under contract with the Browns. I was never worried too much about the OC as that's a position in name only. I'm still more looking forward to the DC hire. 2 Quote

They worked together in New Orleans and Carmichael has 31 years experience. This is one thing I actually called the other day in the Davis Webb thread 9 1 1 Quote
JP51 Posted January 30 Posted January 30 I like young coaches surrounding themselves with experience, especially if they listen, consider, expand, and make their own decision... I do not hate this... 1 Quote

The offense is Joe's, we're not really looking for fresh ideas at this point- he's going to execute his vision. Having experience in this role for Joe to lean on makes the most sense. 3 Quote
Mark92 Posted January 30 Posted January 30 Carmichael has been Sean Paytons right arm going back to his start in New Orleans. Joe Brady is from the Payton tree so this makes a ton of sense. This is a great get for Buffalo. 2 Quote

Who were we going to get that would be a fresh voice AND not want to call plays? Seems like any up and comer would want to call plays. Also, fresh voice on this side of the ball not as important as it would be on defense since Joe is the one calling the plays. He IS the voice. 2 1 Quote
