Before Brady removed his name from consideration for the Saints job last year, a job I believe he wanted and would've taken, the Bills came to Brady with a proposition to stay.....

The Bills made the decision that they would give McDermott one more year to win the Super Bowl, and if he didn't McD would be fired and Brady would be promoted to Head Coach next year. If the Bills did win the Super Bowl this year, McD would stay, and Brady's stock to be a top coaching candidate would be at an all-time high, and he would have his pick of any Head Coaching job available elsewhere....not have to settle for a job like New Orleans.

This would be a win-win for Brady.....either he wins a Super Bowl as an OC, or he gets the job he really wants....coaching Josh Allen in the remainder of his Prime years.

I'm not saying this is what happened, just a theory that has been bouncing around my head over the last few days.

If Brady and the Bills are able to hire the right Defensive Coordinator, I think this is going to work out extremely well for the Bills.

Here's to hoping they get that decision right!!

Their handling of this entire process does not in fact suggest some master plan in place. The results of course will be determined on the field over the next several seasons, but the optics of the process gives one pause before accusing Beane and Pegula of being premeditated and prepared in their approach following the Denver loss.

If the Bills had won the SB all of the desirable HC vacancies would be filled except possibly the Raidas. Brady would likely have gotten screwed until the next coaching cycle… but, we’d have a Lombardi. 👍

You certainly want, and should have, someone who at a moments notice could take the reins and steer the chariot. That should play into selecting the OC and DC every time and it should be a question posed to whoever is selecting them. Of course you’ll get the “no coach wants someone smarter than them” critics saying a HC won’t dear go that route.

It could be more that Brady figured out that logic himself than anything the team did overtly.

Stay and get to the Super Bowl, Brady writes his own ticket.

Stay and not get to the Super Bowl, McD is likely gone, Brady gets the job he wants.

He would have had to bet on himself that his offense would outperform McD’s defense, but with Josh Allen and James Cook, and with the Bills’ recent playoff history, that was always a pretty safe bet.  Plus the Saints were (and are) a tire fire, which made the bet easier to place.

In addition, he doesn’t lack for confidence.  He’s been successful pretty much everywhere he’s gone, he had HC interviewing experience under his belt, and he probably knew that even if the Bills went in a different direction he’d still be a strong candidate in 2026 for a job that was better than New Orleans.

Brady has been a top candidate for a while now as a OC & what he has done with Josh has done nothing but make him a even bigger candidate for a lot of teams & given the amount of teams that have had him in for a interview proves that point .

I think the move to promote him here was in part made because of the amount of attention he was getting around the league and the fact that many other of the top HC ing candidates were getting scooped up which made Brady a better prospect to be taken .

In a perfect world I believe that Beane would have like total to Kubiak but because they couldn't & would have to wait & then the thought that if they did there would be a really good chance that he would be gone by then they figured they had to make the choice so they did .

Then to add to it if they did wait how much more complicated would the transition be ? We know the scheme would be totally different & Josh would have to relearn it along with those that are still under contract & the new HC would bring in his staff which would make it even more challenging .

The new HC along with his staff would have to learn about the players, develop a relationship with them & them with him & all of that takes time, feeling that this team is as close as it has been I feel that the transition will be much easier & quicker . Besides the offense wasn't in need of a huge amount of change the D is what was lacking & with Brady brining in someone he would like to be DC that a improvement will be another plus in the teams getting over the preverbal hump ...

I don't think Pegula is that smart to think a year in advance on the matter. I do think Terry's own words show that this was something that he decided rather impromptu.

However, I do think Brady is smart and may have been playing the long game. Look at it like this. He was the QB coach. And his boss in Dorsey gets fired. He's promoted. Then he's the OC. His boss the HC gets fired. He gets promoted.

One of the following two things could also be true. Maybe Brady saw the writing on the wall and knew Sean's time was short. So he stayed here. Or two...could Joe Brady have sandbagged both Dorsey and McDermott to move up the ranks?  Probably not, but it's a fun theory lol

I highly doubt it. If they had no faith in McDermott a year ago, they would have fired him then.

We should never equate public statements that are made by an organization to an accurate representation of their true intent or actions.  I do believe that Brady was originally brought to Buffalo because of his experience and career upside.  This was to provide some flexibility to address a wide variety of possibilities.  I believe that the Bills were concerned about losing Brady while waiting on Kubiak and missing out on Kubiak.  After the Giants and Falcons filled their openings, I think the Bills were only really interested in Brady and Kubiak.  Beane was not going to become the odd man out.  I understand that line of thinking and I am okay with the decision.

Hiring a DC is now the most important decision that the Bills need to make.

It's entirely possible that Pegula planned this out and this is the result of his efforts.

I think McD knew too. That’s why he was mad at the deadline. That’s why he got the old band back together on defense.

Yeah if I'm the  OC heading into the season and I'm told that it's SB or bust for McD in 2025, and if "bust", I will be named the HC...
