I think Pegula made a rash, emotional decision to fire McDermott. Then, a week after doing so, with the emotions dying down and with him seeing what was out there to replace McDermott, he regretted his decision. He wishes he had waited and thought it through.

So he made the only choice he had to keep the band together … the one that won 5 straight AFC East Championships and went to 2 AFCCG. He promoted, thereby keeping the coaching staff nearly identical.

I think he screwed up, knows he screwed up, and then made this horrendous move to try and fix his mistake.

This theory sounds wrong to me. I don't think it was rash at all. I like McDermott, but it was clear to anyone with eyes that they were never getting to the promised land with him.

I think it's a lot more simple - they just let Allen pick the coach because they're terrified of him demanding a trade a year or two down the line.

I have eyes and I disagree. You don’t replace ONE person in a coaching staff and expect “oh, NOW we can get to the promised land”.

What was?

The Denver loss.  Can only have the same thing happen so many times before it becomes clear that the only constant is the HC.

It tells us that McD was holding the tean back.

Let Brady cook.

McD didn’t call the offense or design the ***** pass concepts. But let’s continue blaming him (and I wanted McD gone btw).

I can see that as well too. I also think the Bills view this as John Elway’s “Wade Phillips” era before Shannahan. I think it’s easier to move completely on from Brady, Beane, and Babich if this goes south quickly. I don’t think the coaches out right now were that impressive to be honest. They’re all super young with no experience. Maybe in 2 years O’Connell or Shannahan becomes available. I’m just trying to be optimistic because I’m as lost as everyone else!🤣

The one the owner said, in his own words, was due to a bad call?

Dont think so.

there are a lot of posters who can’t see past the offensive ranking to see that there were major problems on offense

What happened is that Terry was told by Beane that McDermott would get another job offsetting what Pegula has to pay him over the next two years.

When that didn't happened, Pegula just said keep all the coaches and promote Brady on the cheap.

My theory is simpler: Beane thought we needed something to spark this team (and to deflect blame). He convinced Pegula to fire McD.

They always wanted to stay in house with Brady, but Brady was going to explore other options. They did some window dressing interviews. Brady wasn't as in-demand as he thought. Plus the Bills upped the offer to a 5 year deal. They got what they wanted, just a little slower than anticipated.

It wasn’t rash in the least. It was six years in the making and anyone who thinks Pegula hadn’t thought about firing McD previously is naive. The locker room in Denver wasn’t the first time he saw heartbroken players shedding tears after a close playoff loss.
