Mcvay tree. Has gotten interviews. 36 years old. 2025 Rams Pass Game Specialist.

https://www.baltimoreravens.com/news/nate-scheelhaase-ravens-head-coach-interview-five-things-to-know

He could be next on the Sean McVay coaching tree.

Scheelhaase could be next, and McVay spoke highly of him in December.

"He's a great coach," McVay said, per SI.com. "He has great leadership, great capacity for the game, similar to a lot of our other great coaches. First and foremost, he has great character. There's an ability to be able to connect with all different types.

"There's an ability to own the game from an all-22 perspective. He's excellent. I've really enjoyed working with him. He's a great person, first and foremost, and he has a great family. He's been outstanding, working with the receivers, but he has a tremendous impact on our team and our group as a whole."

He has helped Matthew Stafford have his best season.

Scheelhaase is particularly applauded for his work with pre-snap motion, which the Rams used at the eighth-highest rate in the league this season, per Next Gen Stats.

He helped take a premier wide receiver to another level.

The Stafford-Nacua connection thrived, but Scheelhaase also did a good job working in enough opportunities for veteran Pro Bowl receiver Davante Adams (60 receptions, 789 yards, 14 touchdowns) and tight end Colby Parkinson (43 receptions, 408 yards, eight touchdowns).

He was a dual-threat college quarterback.

Scheelhaase returned to Illinois as a coach in 2015, then flipped to Iowa State in 2018 and worked his way up as a running backs and wide receivers coach until becoming their offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2023.

His tenure overlapped with San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy and Ravens tight end Charlie Kolar, though Scheelhaase is particularly credited with helping to coach up wide receivers Jaylin Noel and Xavier Hutchinson.

He has been a fast-rising star in coaching.

Scheelhaase was the heir apparent to Head Coach Matt Campbell at Iowa State before McVay plucked him to come to the NFL.

"I remember Coach Campbell, after meeting him for the first time, called me and said: 'This guy's the real deal. He's going to have a bright future,'" Iowa State Athletic Director Jammie Pollard said, according to Sports Illustrated. "And I think it really was born on, he just has a very mature presence about him that's very sincere.

"My understanding was the Rams had him targeted. I mean, I don't think it was any secret around college sports that Nate was really good, was a rising star. I mean, he walks into a room and – some guys walk into the room and they're salesmen. Nate can just walk into the room and he's kind of just got that glow, that twinkle in his eye. He can let his actions do all his talking, and some people just have that and he's got it."

I mentioned him early as OC with Mike LaFleur as our HC and possibly Raheem Morris as DC. I'm still hoping.

Too green and hasn’t called plays and not sure he can be the CEO of this franchise.

Needs to get more experience, maybe as an OC first.

I've mentioned him a bunch as the OC coming with Chris Shula, who would improve the defense. I feel like a Shula hire would absolutely improve both sides of the ball if he brought Scheelhaase along as OC, which many expect him to do.

No problem bringing him in for an interview.  There is 1 thing that would make me a little nervous and that would be the talent he had to work with.  I mean, you have a future HOF QB in Stafford that can absolutely sling it and you have a TON of weapons around him.  It would almost be difficult not to get great production out of that offense.  Here, we have the QB and RB, but they have multiple WRs better than the best one we have.  It's a lot easier to throw to all time great WRs that literally catch everything, including the most difficult catches, than it is to throw to this band of misfits we have right now.

So, I am all for interviewing him, but I just have a bunch of caution tape around him.  But he could be great!

You better hope we don't hire Davis Webb or Grant Udinski then.

Sheelhaase refused the Jags OC position to stay with McVay... could be because Coen mostly calls plays though.

He should be a legit candidate to bring in to interview. Odd they’d bring in Udinski and not him.

Yup. I thing that had a ton to do with it. I think if he had the opportunity to call plays under a defensive HC he was familiar with he would leap at the chance. Most logical next career step for him.

Come to Buffalo and call plays for Josh Allen for a year or two and he would likely be viewed as a Ben Johnson level hire

Yep, I’ve said as much about Davis Webb in another thread.  Udinski, who I read lots of great things is in similar boat.    Minter is who I wanted, I have no doubt that he will make the Ravens big time contenders again over the next few years barring any Lamar injuries.

Home run pick.

I think whoever the Bills select they know in advance who the DC will be and for me that will be one of the main considerations.

Shula is interesting but I don’t like how their defense dropped off at the end of this year and how much of his defense was a byproduct of their excellent drafts?

Daboll?  Only if he can bring in a top tier DC.

Kubiak?  I think his name is getting higher hype than his resume.  I suppose his pedigree could have advantages, but again who would be bring in as DC?

Im open to him and Kubiak.  You know my Hail Mary with Shanahan.  I hope the rumors are true and he’s not happy.  If it’s BS, why hasn’t an offensive genius and a highly successful HC been given an extension.  He starts his last year now.  Why a lame duck?  That makes zero sense of he and the team are happy.

Sure, but he’s another guy they can’t talk to for at least a little while. I’m actually hoping for a Rams win so that would mean even more time fwiw. It would free up Kubiak, and I’d prefer Stafford gets another SB title vs anyone else.

It’s often going to be the case that a younger prospect will have a thin resume. Even McVay had only a couple seasons calling plays.

What coaches that have come out from McVay have been good?

Staley, Morris i wouldn't say.

Zach Taylor is probably the best.

Who am I missing?

Udinski was available to be interviewed. The Rams are still playing.
