Owen was head coach of the NY Giants and won a NFL Championship in the 50’s. No one remembers Owen but they do remember his OC and his DC - Vince Lombardi and Tom Landry, respectively. The above is an extreme example but I really believe that weak OC’s and/or DC’s cost us multiple Super Bowl wins in both the Jim Kelly and Josh Allen eras. In the 1988 season Jim Ringo was OC. The offense went into a tailspin the last month of the season. The slump continued into the playoffs. Ted Marchibroda was hired next season and 1989 - 1991 were three of the best offensive seasons in Bills’ history. If Marchibroda was hired one season earlier, Bills very well could have been Super Bowl Champion in 1988 (yes, Belicheck bested both Kelly and Marchibroda in Super Bowl XXV). Walt Corey was mediocre DC on those teams. Bills D was good but a defense with Bruce Smith, Cornelius Bennett, Daryl Talley and more, all in their prime, should have been great, not good. If Wade Phillips was our DC on those teams, we win one or more Super Bowls. Coming back to the present, yes picking the right HC is important, but we are going to need upper echelon OC and DC to make a run at a Super Bowls title. Bad game day decisions also matter. McD was a great culture and process guy, but game day, not so much. 1 Quote

How many of McD's ex-coordinators got lateral or better jobs post-Bills? Dogballs is the obvious one but none other are jumping out at me I can tell you they all took a step back, Dennison, Frazier, Dorsey... 3 hours ago, 1bufwarfan said: I agree, its all about the OC andDC Head Coach , someone offensive minded & Josh Friendly....Daboll, Webb, Brady...etc OC... BVBILLS Posted January 23 Posted January 23 Chefs have Spags, Pats have McDaniels... How about someone with experience this time? Quote
Sgt. Ski Posted January 23 Posted January 23 That's why I still wanted mc dermot, but to replace both oc.And dc Quote
folz Posted January 23 Posted January 23 I also believe this is a huge part of who they hire as HC. First and foremost, we need a head coach who is a true leader and can handle all of the duties of being a head coach without being overwhelmed (not necessarily meaning a retread, but if he's a young, first-time guy, better be sure he's mature enough and seasoned enough to understand and handle all aspects of the job). Secondly, of the guys who meet that criteria, what kind of staff can they build? I think that's why I have leaned towards Klint Kubiak a bit in my thinking. Not only do you get the young and innovative thing, an offensive guy, but with his pedigree, he and his family have a lot of NFL connections, so he could probably build a good staff. Also, although being young, he should understand the job and has people to lean on for advice. Former players like Webb and Rivers probably have great relationships in the league to lean on too. But not sure that means they can build a great staff out of the gate with little experience. I'm not sure how good a staff guys like Daboll, Lynn, and McDaniel could build. They have had their opportunities and didn't build elite staffs, imo. And I'm a little dubious how good of a staff Brady could build, not sure why I feel that way though---I have no idea (other than he's here and might keep some guys around---not sure if it would be enough of a fresh start). I also have no idea about how Anarumo, Udinski, Weaver, etc, would do with that. But yeah, who would you bring in as your coordinators is a HUGE question for this hire. Especially if choosing a younger candidate. Then again, if the Buffalo job (HC, OC, DC) is as desirable as we and ownership thinks it is (because of Josh), then maybe most of them could put a good staff together (as long as their egos don't get in the way or they overlook better candidates for guys they want to bring along with them). Victory Formation Posted January 23 Posted January 23 There is no doubt whatsoever that who you select as your DC/OC and how you fill out your coaching staff is unbelievably important, but I do have a proclivity towards offensive coaches that also call the plays whilst maintaining HC'ing duties... I want a McVay, Shanahan, O'Connell type of HC.. For this reason I prefer Kubiak and Udinski.. Quote
