If Beane had not gone on WGR in April 2025, would you still think he is the problem?

  1. 1. Did he damage his reputation for good from a 10 minute radio phone call?

Straight forward question. Beane was held in higher regard in some circles. Then when he called into WGR to complain about the criticism of his lacking to draft a quality WR, he has never really recovered for that.

If Beane would publicly admit his was wrong about WR and apologize to "Jerry" & Joe that would go a long way. Then if he invested in trading for a top WR and drafting a WR high (if one is worthy of 1st or 2nd round pick), His reputation would be improved.

It’d be wise for him to acknowledge he hasn’t been perfect tomorrow, and where he has shortcomings and regrets.

it’s an interesting crossroads.

given their ppg im not even sure he believes he’s fully wrong now on thinking it’s a want vs a need compared to fixing the defense.

i think he might argue shifting the needle 3 points on the points allowed to be around 19 (5th to 10th range) would be easier than 3 ppg scored and being first by over a point

you know, given a DC at the helm

He’ll likely soft soap it whenever he speaks to spin a human percept to diffuse hostilities, which really isn’t going to sway or matter to most. Could care less either way, wasn’t bothered by his tirade.

Let me throw something else into the mix.

Suppose these signings and picks — Palmer, Samuel, Coleman, etc — were what McDermott wanted, and Beane went out and got them for him.

Then he goes on WGR and offers a full-throated defense of the strategy.  Essentially puts his own rep on the line defending McD.

Then the games start and it becomes obvious it’s not working, just like what happened last year when Beane had to go get Cooper at the deadline.

Wouldn’t you think Beane would have grown progressively more frustrated and resentful at taking all the heat for building a roster in Sean’s image?

I've been on the Beane ain't it train since the deadline in 2023.  All he did was trade for Rasul Douglas, Josh ends up throwing to Trent Sherfield and Deonte Harty in the playoffs.  Fun fact, despite combining for over 90% of the snaps they had 10 yards total.

Less yards than Latavius Murray with 27.

I didn’t even think the discussion with the WGR guys was that bad.

The way people acted over It reminds me of everyone flipping out over a typo in a press release.

It's also been reported (WGR said this AM) that he supposedly would call ProFootballFocus if he received a negative grade on a FA move or draft pick, and threaten to pull funding. That SCREAMS to me that he has a fragile ego, on top of the WGR call.

People here HEAPED braise on "Big Baller Beane" for years. I was never impressed. I thought his pick of Josh Allen, as most QB picks are, was complete luck. I'm sure they believed in him, but I'm also sure that every GM believes in their top 10 QB on draft day.

Outside of Allen, it's been whiffs, singles and the occasional double. He did a great job finding serviceable players late, but we do not have a single other superstar on the 53 man roster. And no, I don't consider James Cook a superstar, though that may be an unpopular opinion.

His WGR appearance undoubtedly damaged his reputation, but it doesn't change the draft history or atrocious FA acquisitions.

Beane in that appearance showed such poor judgment on a variety of levels that it made me question his grip on reality

Of course, the WGR call hurt his reputation. But I was already entertaining doubts about his abilities as a GM before then.

He started with a bang.  Got Allen with his very first draft pick.  Signed Hyde and Poyer as free agents that same spring.

He's been more fizzle than sizzle since.
