Conventional wisdom is that it is better to kick off in OT since it gives you the knowledge of what to do based on what the receiving team has done

If they score a TD you know, you need a TD as well. If they do not score, you know a FG wins the game

But there is one MAJOR FLAW in this logic, and it was proven in both the Bills and Bears-Rams game

If neither team scores (or you both score the same amount of points), then if you have kicked off, the other team gets 2 possessions to score, whereas the kicking team only gets one

Personally, I would change the rule to be more like college where each team is guaranteed an equal # of possessions. There is the recent "Josh 13 second" rule where the kicking team is assured of at least one possession, BUT THEY ARE NOT GUARANTEED EQUAL # of possessions

I would suggest that it might be better to receive to ensure that you are never giving the opponent one more possession than you

Thoughts?

Still too distraught over the loss to comment on the game, but this a general questions and not specifically Bills related :(

Take the ball. The new kick off gives you the ball at the 35 most likely. That’s 5-10 yards and you can punt them super deep. We got the ball at our own 8 yesterday. 1 misstep or a punt and we probably are dead. It’s so dumb with these new kickoff rules to not take the ball. You are damn near at midfield even if you don’t score. You aren’t starting from the same point. I wouldn’t expect us to do the right thing and what do you know…we didn’t

Was also thinking about this. Possession thing aside, If you start with the ball you can much more easily dictate field position too, thus giving yourself an advantage on that 2nd possession.
