Listening to the announcers last night gush over how loud it gets in Seattle and how the title usually goes back and forth between Seattle and Kansas City had me thinking about how with the design of the new Bills stadium and the raucous nature of Bills fans there is probably a really good chance we can take over the crown as being the loudest homefield advantage in the NFL.  I know we have a few engineer dudes on here who are familiar with the new stadium design, is it a realistic expectation crowd noise wise Buffalo will be able to go head to head with the likes of KC and Seattle next year?

It's never going to be as loud again as it was in the 90's SB years when we had 80,000 fans rocking the Ralph

And they were all shouting - not out in the concourses, not on their phones, and not in luxury boxes or club seats

I'll be a new season ticket holder next year and I don't care what they did to engineer it, the noise of 62,000 fans in the new configuration will never match or exceed what we had once upon a time at the Ralph

As an aside - having been to Seattle last year, the noise level there never matched Buffalo, even in the first half when it was still a game

The new Bills stadium is being constructed with some of the same acoustic concepts in mind as Seattle's Lumen Field.

For example, the canopy that'll protect 65% of the fans from rain and snow will also reflect fan noise back onto the field.  Unlike the current open bowl that lets sound escape.

But Lumen has a roof that covers 90% of the seats and has registered 137dB.  Somewhere I saw that Buffalo will probably attain something like 120 to 130 dB or so with the new field.

I think you're probably right that people were more engaged but if the acoustics are done in a way to enhance it will 100% be louder.  Just a matter if they wanna pay.

By the way, saw a video online showing thousands of fans leaving that stadium last night in Seattle when they were down two scores mid-4th qtr.  So that happens everywhere.

I'm not an expert of any kind, but just the presence of a partial roof would seem to enhance the reflection of noise back to the field/playing surface.  Your post seems to confirm that prospect.  I also assume it will reduce wind versus the current stadium and maybe cut down a bit on snowfall accumulations.

I was at the Seattle game last year too and I agree crowd noise was nothing special on that day.  But the Hawks were also having a down year last season and you could tell their fans weren't that into the game from the get go let alone the 2nd half.  It was disappointing because I would love to be in person at that stadium when it is truly rocking.  I've also been to a game at Arrowhead when the fans weren't truly rocking like I am sure it gets for the big games.  Was a bit disappointed by both experiences for the reputation they have. Personally speaking the loudest stadium I have been in was Denver in 2014.  That place was shaking!

TBD….as a good chunk of the blue collar raucous type will be priced out of the new stadium.

Do NOT underestimate the impact that wealthy upper class people on coke will have on crowd noise in the new stadium.

The new stadium will easily surpass the noise levels at the current one. All you have to do is look at the structures themselves. It doesn’t matter that there will be 10K fewer fans. The stands are steep and the sound will be contained, as opposed to the wide open shallow bowl they now play in.

So would this mean we can get rid of the train whistle?

I am not on team train whistle, but I found it interesting that opposing players absolutely detest it when asked about it.  For that reason, I hope it stays.

Disagree. Acoustics do matter.

Josh's rookie year, I went to a Bills game in Houston. Allen wasn't good yet, the Texans weren't great either, and the stadium was at least a quarter empty.

Yet despite that, it was louder than any Bills game I'd ever been to in Buffalo. That's when it really sunk in how loud an indoor stadium could be, even when it wasn't full.

Granted, all the Bills home games I went to were during the drought, so maybe locals just weren't as rowdy as  they used to be.

So true and so sad!  Even if you're in the new stadium you can't mix with the  higher priced seat fans at he M&T lounge.

Aside from the way the building is designed, the speaker system for the new stadium looks to be among the best in the league. That along with the engineering decisions, it looks like the new stadium will be quite loud. But really, for this question, we'll just have to wait and see how loud we can get it, when the fans are finally there on gameday. Until then, none of us knows for sure.
