Anyone remember Butch "shake rattle and" Rolle... guy was a 3rd tight end touch down maker... cause he got lost in coverage... so Hawes.. who incidentally I love... beast as a blocker and is reliable at catching the ball..  his ceiling... until he starts drawing coverage like a Kincaid or Knox I just dont know how he will perform... he is a nice surprise for us... but can he split and run a route in coverage... we will see...  what we do have is a great blocking tight end that can be an under the radar receiving threat... if we can polish up his blocking and keep him in a place where he can be receiving threat that teams need to account for I think his contribution is past what his stats will ever say because that in and of itself will create mismatches and openings for others...  His ceiling... he reminds me a lot of Mark Bavaro

He's probably renting at this stage of his career, so maybe 8 feet?  Unless it's a really old place or pehaps newer or contemporary then maybe 16 feet tops.

Depends what you mean by ceiling.

 

If you're talking about in the passing game, I think he's kind of hit his ceiling already. 

 

He's far too elite and important as a blocking Tight End (which is what we Drafted him for) to have him abandoning that for routes and/or designed pass plays much more than he already is doing. 

 

He's a better Lee Smith or Quintin Morris. A guy that's primarily going to pass and run block for you at a high level, but will sneak a route or come off a block and get open to catch the occasional pass.

 

I wouldn't expect to see him be a primary part of the passing game.

he's the type guy who picks up a key block, or slips away for a clutch third down you had to have in a playoff game.  guys like that are like are gold, at a very cap friendly price.

Blocking is typically the thing TE's struggle with the most. Hawes already has that nailed and he's on the field more than any other TE. He's also proven to be a capable pass catcher. If a blocker is all the bills wanted, they could always throw another lineman out there. Hawes gives them something extra. 

He might not look like Antonio Gates, but he could easily find himself in situations where he puts up monster games and seasons if we get our play action game going.

I think he could be a 30-40 catch a season guy. I put his ceiling above what Dawson Knox brings.

Guys, I love Hawes too, but he’s not Kinkaid and never will be.  He’s great at the dump off as no LB actually wants to man up on him.  Hell, DE’s don’t want to line up on him.  He’s an option and will grow a little with the passing game.  He’s not even Knox.  He had almost 100 yards Sunday.  He would more if there were more opportunities for him.  Brady has been blowing it with Knox.  He’s better than what I’ve heard on this board this year.  He can be a bigger threat.  Brady has to grow some creativity, god forbid.
