I'm sure he's everything McD and Beane expected, a exceptional blocker to compliment the O line. He's actually turned out to be a great safety valve for Josh when pass plays break down pretty much because they don't pay him any attention. 😅

 

He's a keeper no doubt. Gotta love a specialty guy who loves doing the dirty work others hate. 

 

There's no finesse and his hands are still a question. What there is is an elite knowledge of run concepts, competent ability to engage and finish and eagerness to bury people's faces in the turf.

 

To me his ceiling is a better blocking Dawson Knox.

I mean, I think what we are seeing is kind of who is going to be for his entire career.

 Maybe an uptick here or there on receptions, but otherwise just a high level blocker who can sneak out and catch a ball every now and then.

I loved the Jackson Hawes TD play. It was entirely Hawes using his initiative.

 

He's not supposed to do anything but block. So after he blocks his guy into oblivion for four-ish seconds, he's like, wait, the play is still going on? Something's wrong!

 

So he sort of walks underneath the uprights and shows Josh his numbers. Of course nobody on Cinci is assigned him in coverage because he's been blocking for a football eternity.

I agree with most of this but I think there is one other thing worth adding.

Since Day 1 he has absolutely shown a knack for recognizing coverages, finding soft spots and making himself available for Allen when things break down.

He's never going to run by man coverage or present match-up problems for defenses, but his innate understanding of what's happening on the field could make him a more reliable receiving threat than his limited speed would indicate. Maybe sort of the Mack Hollins of TEs.

Agree. He's got that internal clock that knows when to disengage from his assignment and make himself available as an option if the play called doesn't materialize as expected.

the impact is that he makes Dawson Knox expendable for cap relief..this Hawes-Kincaid are ying-yang run-pass kings and all we need is 3rd TE  depth and Knox is too expensive for 3rd string

I agree with you …although a number in the Bills media are saying that Knox will sign a new ( cheaper ) deal this offseason …

 

Must admit …Knox had his best game in a long while this past week…but I’d still be looking to get cheaper at TE and put the money into a WR

4 years at Yale...an Ivy guy, then one at Georgia Tech......found him in the 4 th round I think.  Haven't seen the pro receiving skills yet, but, yes, he can  catch the ball...decent hands.  Best blocking TE around though.  At 260 he likely never runs like a wr though. (Kincaid can)

He's a great blocker, he seems pretty good at sneaking himself open 10 yards downfield, and he has shown good hands so far. I don't think he's much of a route runner, but maybe that can change. He is also not very tall, nor super fast. I don't see him doing Kincaid things, or even Knox things, in the receiving game. 

 

I think he's going to be a really fantastic role player with a low price tag, and he could be on the roster for a very long time.
