Or, here in Cincinnati, it's usually over by the end of May.

Couldn't agree more.  A single baseball game in April, May, June and July means almost nothing.

They should narrow the season and play closer to what basketball and hockey have (82 games).

They at least mean something when being played.

meh- I think sports have space for both sprints and marathons

Aiyuk joins the ranks of Latrell Sprewell and Ricky Waters for insanity.  Both of them were insulted by their last contract offers in the multi-millions and rejected them because “they had to feed their families” and neither played again. 
 

All Aiyuk had to do was show up for rehab with the Niners to keep his mega contract and couldn’t do that.  Now, all he has to do is apply for reinstatement to force something to happen and he doesn’t?   He also fired his agent because said agent was the best man at John Lynch’s wedding claiming split loyalties and says he’s representing himself.

 

Doing a great job of it, right?!

To be fair to the crazy/violent Spreewell, the famous "i have a family to feed" comment came after the T Wolves offered his a 3 year extension at a significant discount that he, as a 4 time All Star and ant the teams 3rd leading scorer didn't think he deserved.

 

Watters didn't do anything crazy.  Maybe you're thinking of Ricky Williams?  He wasn't crazy either, just a stoner.

When they expanded the playoffs so the WS is now in November they should have shortened the regular season. Instead they now start in March. Baseball isn't a winter game. Even the 154 game schedule that persisted until the 60's would be improvement and chop nearly two weeks off the calendar.

Ricky Watters did have the "For who, for what?" thing in his first game in Philly after signing (at that time) a big contract there. That went over super well.

I'd argue they should even cut NBA and NHL seasons in half.   I have a lot of trouble getting invested in a sport where each individual game has very little meaning.   That's pretty much why I exclusively watch football, the stakes are high from week 1.

He's on the "Left Squad" list because he refused to report. For him to be cut, he would have to apply for reinstatement and then check in at the 49ers facility, after which he would be immediately cut. He absolutely refuses to take this step for some reason. He's complaining about the team not doing something that he won't allow to happen. I don't understand why, unless he doesn't want to play and just wants the attention.

I’m not even a big baseball guy but do think there’s space for a sport that’s got such a long horizon. It’s not optimized for the fast news cycle or fantasy sports but maybe the old man in me thinks that’s a positive in its own way 

 

im by no means tied to exact dates but think chopping the season in half doesn’t feel great

They'll never do it so you don't need to worry. They won't even cut back to 154.

I think they are really considering holding him on the roster, letting him get another year older, and leveraging the situation to be able to fine or suspend him (or both). It's not like they need to release him for cap reasons.

ultimately he’s off the 53 as a did not report 

 

He has to file return paperwork with the league before the niners feel any pain and have any reason

 

ultimately, in a couple weeks he either shows up to camp forcing their hand… or he won’t and we will know that he’s truly lost his mind and is done in the league.

He ran for 3800 yards averaging an insane 325 carries per year,  5500 yards from scrimmage and 32 total TDs, 3 Pro Bowls in 3 years for them.  No one cared after that first game. He helped get them back to the playoffs his first 2 years with Rodney Peete and Ty Detmer at QB.  He was worth every penny.

 

There was no crazy in Watters.

Until he files for reinstatement, they can't cut him because right now he's not an active NFL player.

As a person who lived in Philly at the time this is categorically untrue. LOTS of people cared the whole time he was there. You could walk up to people in a certain age bracket right now and say "For who for what?" And get an immediate reaction.

That's more a reflection on Philly fans--roundly described as the worst (they boo their SB MVP routinely).  This guy was the whole Offense for a few years.

 

Even so, that one phrase doesn't put him in the same sentence with Aiyuk as a lunatic.

I have been responding to another poster who compared Watters to Aiyuk.  You jumped in to provide an example which fell far short of supporting the other guy's claim.

 

Posters here started a thread about how smart Stevie Johnson, a guy who dropped a game winning TD pass in OT and blamed Jesus, is.  So I don't believe fans here would have held a single utterance in week 1 by a RB who got them back to the playoffs 2 years in a row against him for very long.  No chance.
