As more and more kickers are attempting longer and longer FGs, the number of punts are presumably decreasing. It devalues the defensive stops that used to force a punt. 7 minutes ago, Offside Number 76 said: Why not? I think they're awesome. I just think FG's have become too easy (unless your name is Bass!). Hats off to the kickers who have become stronger and more accurate over the years but I just think it's become too easy for a team to get into FG position, particularly at the end of the game. Quote
Matt_In_NH Posted 13 hours ago Posted 13 hours ago They changed the rules for k balls this year and it has an impact Quote

By far the least sexy position to play, but if you had a kid serious about sports/school, it easily would be the easiest route to getting a scholarship. Not easy, but easiest. Bonus points for parents leary of brain injury side of the sport. Ill admit to being a hypocrite here. I played football among other sports, its my absolute fav thing, but I wont be pushing my 2year old towards it when he gets old enough. Now if he comes to me and its really his thing, and hes dying to play, im not going to tell him no. Sort of ironically, I wont be pushing him towards soccer either, for the same (same'ish LOL) reason... even though thats most typical sport for kids to start in. I will be trying to nudge him towards wrestling, baseball, basketball. For all the ball busting wrestlers take, it prepared me for real life more than any other sport. I dont think id be half the man I am without it: discipline, motivation, pushing past your comfort zone, all sorts of mental barriers destroying. Translates really well to others sports to... I dont think most people realize how many NFL'ers were high level wrestlers at some point. Especially LB, DL, and OL Absolutely hate the variable point on kicks lol so with that said, i can look forward to Goodell rolling that out shortly Teams may ho got it more than kicking field goals and you dont get that automatic FG to tie late. Thr yard marks could change yo br where LOS is located to 15/35 Golf is safest for head injuries. Quote

Decades ago the Bills' kicker Booth Lustig missed a kick tht cost Buffalo the game. later a carload of Bills fans spotted Lustig on the sidewalk. They piled out of the car and beat him up. 1 Quote

Since they pretty much start at the 35 now, you get a first down+ and youre in field goal range. Yeah, overall, id like a punt every now and then. Maybe the answer is increasing the penalty for a missed kick by 5 yards? I dont know, but yeah field goals are kind of lame in general. Quote

jerryaldini Posted 5 hours ago Posted 5 hours ago I'd be curious to know how FG attempts per drive has changed. With teams going so often on 4th I wouldn't be surprised if they are lower despite longer FGs. It really comes into play at the end of games where you don't have to worry about giving up the ball on your side of the field for a 60 yard FG. Quote

If you miss a field goal, the downside is greater the further the distance, because the opposing offense takes over from that spot. I think the risk/reward is already baked in and you actually don't see the insanely long field goals attempted unless time is expiring at the half or end of game or the team HAS to late in the game to keep their hopes alive.
